    Compassionate staff provide excellent care

I felt genuinely cared for - compassionate, attentive staff and timely communication gave me real peace of mind. Rooms are large and cleaned daily, therapy and dining are excellent, and nurses and CNAs are knowledgeable and go above and beyond. I was very happy with my stay and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for Berkeley Nursing & Rehab are strongly mixed, with clear patterns of both consistent strengths and recurring operational weaknesses. Many families and former residents praise direct care: nurses, CNAs and therapy staff are frequently described as attentive, caring, and technically competent. Positive comments highlight clear medication explanations by lead nurses, effective wound care and socialโ€‘work support, and a therapy department that some families credited with meaningful rehabilitation progress. Several reviewers also emphasized a familyโ€‘like atmosphere, proactive maintenance, and daily housekeeping that contributes to a generally wellโ€‘kept environment.

At the same time, a number of reviews point to operational gaps that prospective families should evaluate. Staffing levels appear inconsistent by shift and day of week; weekend and offโ€‘shift coverage was singled out multiple times. Related issues include concerns about staff conduct and communication tone, delayed responsiveness to family queries, and uneven performance among individual caregivers. Safety practices also received critical attention: reviewers cited lapses in fallโ€‘prevention measures and inconsistent use of safety equipment, which led some families to relocate residents.

Dining and activities elicit polarized feedback. Several reviewers praised restaurantโ€‘quality meals, seasonal programming, and staff efforts to engage residents; others described dissatisfaction with food quality and communication from dining staff. The therapy and recreational programs were often seen as a strength, with reports of courteous, engaged therapy teams and efforts to maintain an active, festive atmosphere for residents.

Facility condition and management present a similar contrast. Many commenters noted clean rooms, prompt maintenance, and roomy accommodations; others raised temperature control problems, intermittent sanitation or odor concerns in common areas, and complaints about the physical condition of some beds or furnishings. Management is described variably โ€” some families found administrators compassionate and proactive, while others reported poor responsiveness, leadership turnover, and serious community concerns. There are also mentions of legal or regulatory allegations that warrant direct inquiry.

Taken together, the pattern suggests that Berkeley Nursing & Rehab can provide highโ€‘quality, compassionate care in many cases, particularly in nursing, therapy and housekeeping. However, variability in staffing, communication, safety practices, and dining consistency are recurring themes. Families considering this facility should tour with specific questions about staffing ratios by shift, fallโ€‘prevention protocols and safety equipment, personalโ€‘property tracking, visitation policies, and any active regulatory actions; asking to meet therapy and nursing leads and to sample meals can help validate the aspects that matter most to the prospective resident.

    About Berkeley Nursing & Rehab

Berkeley Nursing & Rehab Center is a small, for-profit skilled nursing facility that offers both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care services. The center participates in both Medicare and Medicaid programs, allowing individuals with a wide range of payment sources to access its care. With 72 beds, Berkeley Nursing & Rehab Center provides a more intimate setting compared to larger institutions, and its ownership is held by a private individual rather than a corporation or non-profit entity. Although not formally part of a continuing care retirement community, the facility delivers nursing and rehabilitation care to residents with varying needs for support with daily living, mobility, and medical management.

Short-term rehabilitation services at Berkeley Nursing & Rehab Center are designed for patients recovering from acute hospital stays due to conditions such as stroke, heart attack, infections, or injuries. The facility aims to support residents in regaining their strength and independence with the goal of returning home where possible. Nurse staffing at the center averages approximately 2 hours and 53 minutes of care per resident per day. Emergency health episodes are addressed promptly, and the center offers support with daily living activities, medication management, and specialized care needs such as wound and ulcer management, feeding tubes, range of motion improvement, pain control, and infection prevention.

Ongoing healthcare, nutrition, and safety are considered priorities at Berkeley Nursing & Rehab Center, with protocols in place to manage food sourcing and storage, administer medications safely, and ensure residents receive proper vaccinations for flu and pneumonia. The center is frequently inspected to monitor adherence to federal and state standards, and it routinely addresses findings related to its operations and care delivery. Residents who are unable to perform activities of daily living independently receive tailored assistance from staff, including assistance with bathing, dressing, mobility, and toileting.

The center's involvement with Medicaid provides support for residents who require extended care after exhausting private pay or long-term care insurance options. Berkeley Nursing & Rehab Center is committed to providing appropriate care for a range of medical conditions, including those requiring catheter care, feeding tube use, and management of bowel and bladder continence. In addition to medical and rehabilitative care, the team seeks to involve residents and, when appropriate, their legal representatives in key decisions about their records and care plans, honoring personal preferences and medical directives throughout their stay.
