    Clean, homey, welcoming, attentive care

I've been very pleased with this small, family-oriented facility - clean, homey, and welcoming. The staff are warm, caring, and attentive (Paola, Iris and Essence stood out); nurses and therapists gave clear, personalized rehab plans and answered call lights promptly. Residents love the therapy cats, the meals are good, and activities keep things upbeat. Overall a very good place with strong continuity of care and a comforting atmosphere - I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews portray a facility with a clear split between strong interpersonal care and operational shortcomings. On the positive side, families and residents frequently describe compassionate, attentive nursing and caregiving staff, with many praise points for long-tenured employees who know residents’ preferences. Rehabilitation and therapy services receive consistent positive remarks: therapists are described as knowledgeable, individualized therapy plans are common, and the therapy/rehab team and director are often credited with successful discharges. The small, family-oriented atmosphere and an active activities program — including a noted activity director — contribute to a home-like culture that many residents and families value. Several reviews also highlight effective hospice and end-of-life care and warm front-desk interactions.

Care delivery quality appears variable. While some accounts describe timely medication administration, attentive nurses, and proactive care coordination, other accounts indicate lapses such as missed medications, missed feeding or therapy sessions, and delays responding to call lights. These indicate underlying gaps in care continuity and clinical coordination that prospective families should investigate. Infection-control practices and basic protective measures are described inconsistently; at times staff are noted to follow protocols closely, while at other times hand-hygiene and glove use are described as inconsistent.

Dining and activities present a mixed picture. Many residents enjoy meals and describe the dining environment as pleasant, and the activities program is seen as a strength with good engagement. However, there are also reports of variability in meal quality and interruptions to meal service that have led to unfinished plates and dissatisfaction for some families.

The physical plant and management of the environment are recurring areas of concern. Multiple items point to sanitation and odor issues in rooms and common areas, insufficient bathroom infrastructure and privacy, maintenance problems (water damage, mold-like issues, broken fixtures, windows/screening deficiencies), temperature-control issues, and evidence of stray animals in public areas. These translate into facility-level maintenance and housekeeping shortcomings. Reviewers also note weak on-site security and inconsistencies in staff training and supervision, which can compound other operational problems.

Notable patterns: strong, compassionate staff and effective therapy/rehab services contrast with persistent operational problems — staffing consistency, medication and care-delivery controls, infection-prevention practices, environmental maintenance, and security. The facility appears capable of delivering high-quality, personalized care in many cases, but that experience is uneven and may depend on timing, unit assignment, or specific staff present. Prospective residents and families should schedule multiple visits at different times of day, observe staff–resident interactions, review staffing ratios and medication/therapy protocols, inquire about recent maintenance and infection-control initiatives, and ask for documentation of corrective actions for any cited deficiencies before making placement decisions.

    About Ahva Care of Stickney

Ahva Care of Stickney is a senior care center with several locations, including one at 3900 South Oak Park Avenue in Stickney, Illinois and another at 28W141 Liberty Street in Chicagoland, and if you go up to East Dubuque or out to Winfield, they've got sites there too, and they serve folks from Chicagoland, east-central Illinois, and south-western Indiana, so it's been around the area a while. The Stickney facility has 51 beds and focuses on both short-term rehab and long-term skilled nursing for people who need more daily help. At Ahva Care, the staff includes a quality assurance nurse who checks care standards, and nurses are there 12 to 16 hours a day, plus a 24-hour call system and round-the-clock supervision, which really helps safety. If your needs are more medical, they handle skilled nursing and intermediate care, with English-speaking, licensed professionals doing things like wound care, IV medicines, in-house dialysis, cardiac rehab, and even telehealth, plus in-house tests like x-rays and ultrasounds, so you don't always have to go elsewhere. They offer physical, occupational, and speech therapies up to six days a week, helping folks gain strength, manage pain, or work on speech and swallowing, and before sending someone home, therapists can do safety checks on where you live.

For people who need memory care, they've got a secure area with programs and activities for those with dementia or Alzheimer's, plus there's memory-enhancing activities to keep everyone busy and engaged. If someone needs help after a hospital stay, the short-term rehab has therapy and nursing with a more home-like, cozy feel, and they try to get people up and moving as soon as possible. You can find help for all kinds of daily activities, like bathing, dressing, washing up, managing medicine and meals, and getting around, plus there's a team to arrange rides when needed. The rooms are furnished, and many come with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, so things do feel homier, with WiFi and phones set up already. Cleaning and laundry are taken care of by the staff too, pretty much so residents don't need to worry about the chores. They've got dining rooms, a fitness room, a gaming room, garden spaces, outdoor areas, a small library, a wellness center, and lots of places to gather, which can make it easier to meet other people and join in the events.

Activities are a big part of the center's plan, with a dedicated activity director planning things for each day, including trips, games, resident-led clubs, and community events. For people who just need a short stay, maybe if a caregiver is away, respite care is available and gives access to all main services. The community also works with those needing hospice care, focusing on pain control and comfort for residents at the end of life, including emotional and spiritual support if that's wanted. No matter if you need help for just a few weeks or for a longer spell, they design a care plan that fits. Meals, transportation, therapy, and medical help all come under one roof, and the staff aims to keep people as independent as possible, helping with what's needed but still supporting dignity, so folks can feel cared for and safe in a way that feels familiar and natural, whether for a short stay or the long term. Ahva Care of Stickney isn't verified by outside accreditors, but it remains a well-established option for both assisted living and more intensive nursing care, all with a focus on honest, compassionate service and a professional approach.
