    Kind staff, thorough tour, confusing

I found the staff kind and the tour very thorough. The floor plan is confusing, though, and I worry the layout would be hard for an elderly person to navigate.

    About Heartwood House

Heartwood House sits at 1900 24th Street in Ames, IA, as part of Northcrest Community, offering a variety of senior living options including independent living, assisted living, and memory care for aging adults, and you'll find they have a real focus on safety, comfort, and individual choice, so the place is set up with features like secured indoor and outdoor areas, accessible showers, way-finding systems, safety sprinklers, skilled nursing staff on duty all day and night, and a thoughtful layout with calming gardens, patios, and indoor spaces, which really helps people who might have memory problems or need extra support. Residents can choose private rooms and different floor plans, and they can count on things like daily meals prepared to meet individual needs by a professional chef, on-site laundry facilities, and services like housekeeping, medication help, and transportation to get groceries or go to appointments, and while that all sounds pretty standard nowadays, Heartwood House goes further with life enrichment programs-there are religious services, exercise and wellness classes, game and activity rooms, live performances, outings, day trips, gardening clubs, and arts and crafts, which a lot of folks enjoy, especially when paired with birthday and holiday parties, and the place is known for hosting group events like the Walk to End Alzheimer's with staff, families, and volunteers getting involved. Now if a person needs dementia care, Heartwood House has specialized programs and memory care support for Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, including round-the-clock supervision, memory-enhancing activities, and designs inside that help with orientation, from color-coded hallways to pictures and signs, and everything in rooms and common spaces is thought through-there's even the comforting smell of baked cookies and things like homemade quilts to give a homey feeling. Besides regular support for things like medication, meals, and mobility, there's also help for diabetes care, wound care, and rehabilitation, and the health team always tries to match care with each person's needs, whether they're mostly independent or need more help. Amenities cover Wi-Fi, cable TV, kitchens or kitchenettes, washers and dryers, maintenance, a dining room, salon/barber, fitness center, theater room, guest parking, and security, and folks also get access to guest meals, transportation, spiritual care, and all sorts of activity spaces. Families or caregivers who need a break can use respite care, and there's a big effort to make every resident feel respected and well-cared-for, whether they're living with full independence or facing challenges with memory or mobility. For something a little more cheerful, you'll find an associated flower shop with delivery straight to Heartwood House and other local places, so residents can get fresh flowers or bouquets during holidays or for special events, even with same-day delivery, and that's a nice touch for birthdays, Valentine's Day, Easter, and other occasions, and the shop offers a variety of floral baskets and arrangements, online ordering around the clock, and service as a top-ranked FTD florist. Heartwood House may not have the flash of some newer places, but people do say the staff is attentive, the environment is friendly, and the care takes account of both safety and personal dignity, aiming for comfort and a real sense of community for older adults in Ames.
