    Well-kept community, impressive apartment, staff

I live here and I'm very pleased - the community is beautiful, well kept, very clean and orderly. My apartment is impressive: a small living room with kitchenette, a nice bathroom, a fair-sized bedroom with storage, an inside front door and a back door to the shared yard; there's a bulletin board outside and decorating is allowed. Staff in every department are excellent and the recently remodeled assisted-living wing makes this a great place to retire.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews describe a facility with notable physical strengths but important operational concerns. The physical environment receives consistent praise: a recently remodeled assisted-living wing, attractive apartments with kitchenettes and storage, allowable personal decorating, and access to an outdoor yard. Many comments emphasize cleanliness and an orderly common area. At the same time, reviewers describe a mix of positive and negative experiences with care and management that produces a polarized overall impression.

Care quality: Accounts indicate inconsistent quality of personal care. Several reviews describe delays in attending to basic needs, including incontinence-care delays and prolonged waits for assistance. At the same time, some nursing staff and named points of contact were described as helpful and responsive. This pattern suggests variability in day-to-day caregiving tied to staffing and scheduling rather than uniform clinical practice.

Staff: Staff performance appears uneven. Multiple departments are characterized as competent and helpful by some families, while other comments raise concerns about staff conduct and limited familiarity with residents (including difficulties identifying residents by name). These descriptions point to variability across shifts or roles and to issues with onboarding, training, or staff continuity.

Dining and activities: Review content contains limited specific information about dining and structured activity programming. Reviewers did not provide consistent detail on meal quality, menu variety, or an activities schedule. Prospective residents and families should request current menus, activity calendars, and sample daily schedules during a tour.

Facilities and maintenance: The facility's physical features and apartment layout are strengths; reviewers repeatedly noted attractive rooms, decent bathrooms, and general upkeep in many areas. However, there are also reports of episodic maintenance and waste-management problems and at least one mention of an unresolved repair project. These items suggest that while routine housekeeping and cosmetic updates are generally well managed, some larger or episodic maintenance work may be inconsistent.

Management and organizational patterns: Several comments raise concerns about leadership, communication, and regulatory adherence. Observations include perceptions of unresponsive or authoritarian management, unclear follow-through on policies, and references to compliance issues at an earlier facility associated with the provider. Combined with staffing variability, these management concerns appear to be a central contributor to families' dissatisfaction.

Notable patterns and advice for families: The reviews present a split picture—strong physical accommodations and praised staff in some departments contrasted with operational weaknesses that affect resident comfort and family confidence. Key areas for a prospective tour or decision-making conversation are staffing ratios by shift, sample care schedules (including toileting and bathing frequency), staff training and turnover, documentation of regulatory compliance, specifics of recent maintenance projects, and a clear disclosure of fees and perceived value. Asking to meet both leadership and front-line caregivers, and speaking with current families about their day-to-day experience, may help clarify whether the facility's strengths are consistently delivered for a particular resident.

    About Sunset Home Inc

Sunset Home Inc sits close to downtown Concordia, KS, in a spot that has open country spaces but is still near the Cloud County Health Center and a few local pharmacies, and the place has been a well-known nursing home and care facility for over a century now, offering housing and help for seniors in a range of living situations, whether someone needs just a little bit of help or more skilled nursing care. The facility runs as a non-profit and has 33 residential health care beds, 15 assisted living beds, and 45 nursing facility beds, as well as some independent living apartments that give residents privacy and options free from chores and home upkeep, and they offer Adult Day Services for those who need care throughout the day but don't live there full-time. Sunset Home supports independence while providing round-the-clock supervision, a 24-hour call system, and help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, and medication reminders, and if someone needs more medical support, the skilled nursing area is there for both long-term or short-term recovery.

Seniors who move in can choose rooms that come furnished or semi-furnished, with some two-room apartments including kitchenettes and direct outdoor access, though they don't allow oven ranges for safety, but small fridges and microwaves can go in some apartments. The staff takes care of housekeeping, laundry, and dry-cleaning, so residents can focus on other things, and meal services are available for all residents, including special menus if someone needs a diabetic or allergy-sensitive diet, with all-day dining and snacks offered, and there's space for eating together in communal dining rooms. Residents stay active with arts and crafts, games, movie nights, socials, and access to an arts room, or they can get outside on landscaped walking paths or visit nearby community parks and gardens, and the community brings in events and activities sponsored by local groups. A salon and barber services are on-site for grooming needs, and there's transportation available for errands, appointments, or just moving in, with parking for visitors and residents.

The facility does coordinate health care and therapy with outside providers and offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy, so someone recovering from surgery or managing health challenges can get the help they need, and medication management is available for those who need reminders or help taking the right medicines on time. There are secured Memory Care spaces for seniors living with dementia, where staff supervise and assist them in a safe environment. The emergency alert system, extra wide hallways, and open community spaces help residents feel both safe and comfortable, and the staff helps with transfers, bathing, dressing, and support for those who can't walk on their own. Sunset Home provides a place where seniors and their families can count on compassionate, professional care in a setting that's been trusted for generations, and all these things come together to aim for a life that's safer, easier, and filled with more chances to enjoy each day.
