    Compassionate staff enabled my recovery

I had a very positive stay - the staff were professional, empathetic, and communicative, and the nursing director made sure my OT/PT was coordinated and effective so I could regain independence. The facility is beautiful, light-filled, and active (chapel and daily activities); admission was seamless and nurses/CNAs went above and beyond to help me recover and go home safely. Families stayed informed, dignity was respected, and overall I recommend this caring, well-run community.

    Summary of reviews

Reviewer feedback for Our Lady of Wisdom Community Care Center is markedly mixed, producing a bimodal picture: many families and former residents praised clinical rehabilitation, compassionate caregiving, and the facility’s spiritual and social programming, while other accounts raise persistent operational concerns that affect day-to-day resident experience.

Care and clinical services: Positive commentary centers on strong therapy services (physical, occupational, and speech), individualized therapy plans, and a therapy team credited with restoring independence and facilitating safe discharge home. Several reviewers singled out the nursing leadership and individual caregivers for compassion, professionalism, and clear care coordination. Conversely, other reviews describe lapses in clinical processes including medication-administration gaps, inconsistent competency among nursing staff, and inadequate clinical handoffs. These opposing impressions suggest that quality may depend on staffing mix and specific shifts.

Staffing and management: Many reviews praise front‑line staff as warm and attentive; however, a consistent operational theme is staffing instability. Reviewers describe frequent use of agency staff, short-handed shifts, and unreliable scheduling practices. Administrative issues are also raised — examples include poor scheduler interactions, uneven accountability, and communication breakdowns during admissions and discharges. Together these factors appear to drive variations in care experience and family satisfaction.

Dining, activities, and environment: The facility’s physical environment is frequently described as bright and accessible, with a dedicated chapel and active devotional programming that are important to faith‑oriented residents. Activities and group sessions are often cited as meaningful and well organized. At the same time, there are recurring comments about inconsistent meal quality and limited menu variety. Some reviewers note declines in amenities and grounds upkeep following ownership change, and a subset of reviews raise sanitation and odor concerns in specific rooms or common areas.

Transitions and safety concerns: A notable pattern concerns transitions — several accounts highlight chaotic or poorly coordinated discharge processes, lack of follow‑up guidance, and medication mismanagement during transitions of care. There are also serious operational concerns cited by some families, including allegations of theft and property‑security lapses and reports of delayed assistance with personal care. These items point to gaps in supervision, property controls, and timely responsiveness that prospective families should evaluate.

Bottom line: The facility demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation services, spiritual programming, and caring individual staff members, and it can deliver positive recovery outcomes when staffing and administrative processes function well. At the same time, persistent issues with staffing consistency, administrative professionalism, sanitation in select areas, meal variety, and transition coordination create variability in the resident experience. Prospective residents and families should ask targeted questions about current staffing ratios, agency‑staff usage, medication and discharge protocols, recent ownership/management changes, meal menus, and property‑security measures before making a placement decision.

About Our Lady of Wisdom Community Care Center

Our Lady of Wisdom Community Care Center sits on General Degaulle Drive in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a big property lined with trees and a traditional New Orleans courtyard that gives folks a nice outdoor space, and you'll find six different households there, each with its own living spaces, and even though there are both private and semi-private rooms, the shared rooms feel more private since the baths go between the beds, and you get the feeling of comfort from things like vaulted ceilings, arched windows, stained glass, and plenty of natural light. The place has 136 certified beds and has been managed by Commcare Management Corporation since June 2023, plus it works as a non-profit, and you'll see that it used to be operated by the Catholic Church but now the state runs it. The staff offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and nursing/rehab services, so they're able to help people needing different levels of care, including those with Alzheimer's, dementia, or those who just need a little extra help dressing, bathing, or getting around the place. The center has a strong focus on helping residents build strength and recover, aiming for folks to go home when possible, and the care team works to make sure residents can do as much as they're able while still looking after them with 24-hour supervision.

The building's got some nice touches-there's a chapel for quiet reflection, an auditorium and Tuscany Hall for bigger gatherings or events, plus a resource library with information on elder health, Medicare, Medicaid, and other wellness topics, and the fitness center, rehab gym, and on-site salons try to keep things comfortable for everyone, while the regular trips, activities, and volunteer-run programs keep people from feeling lonely or left out. Meals come prepared, either one or two a day, and the place helps with laundry, housekeeping, and transportation if needed. The nursing staff includes skilled professionals, therapists for occupational, physical, or speech therapy, and regular physician services, though there's been some concern noted in reports, like deficiencies in infection control and food service, and a higher nurse turnover rate, though receptionists and staff generally have a reputation for courteous treatment and residents get person-centered care that aims to make them feel respected and dignified. The community belongs to a larger network of care, offering options from independent living to skilled nursing, hospice, and adult day care services, and the people there strive to make everyone feel comfortable and cared for, focusing a lot on comfort, dignity, and supporting people as their needs change over time, and family members, volunteers, or community members are invited to join activities and help residents enjoy time together.
