    Small homey facility, compassionate staff

I placed my dad here and have been very pleased - a small, homey community with large private rooms and bathrooms, family-style meals, and a clean, welcoming atmosphere. Tina and the staff were incredibly responsive during onboarding, handled medications and care coordination on time, and treated my dad with obvious warmth and respect. The caregivers are compassionate, attentive, and skilled, and the facility's communication and support gave our family real peace of mind. I highly recommend this place.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews for Caraway Assisted Living describe a facility with a clear set of strengths alongside several recurring operational concerns. Positively, many families highlight compassionate, hands-on caregiving and good communication with families. The community is described as small and home-like, with private, spacious rooms and pleasant common areas. Reviewers frequently note family-style dining, onsite rehabilitation services, and staff experienced with dementia care. Specific staff members and managers receive repeated praise for responsiveness and support during admission and care transitions.

At the same time, there are consistent patterns of concern that potential residents and families should weigh. Dining quality and menu adherence emerge as a major issue: reviewers describe inconsistent meal preparation, limited fresh produce, and cases where meals did not follow dietitian guidance. Medication-administration and documentation problems are also a repeated theme, with accounts suggesting lapses in secure handling, timing, and recordkeeping. These clinical-safety topics are raised alongside examples of staff having multiple responsibilities (cooking, cleaning, caregiving), which reviewers link to reduced direct engagement time with residents.

Operational and safety practices are another important area of divergence. Several reviews reference transfer- and fall-related incidents and note limited preventive practices, which suggests gaps in transfer protocols and fall-prevention training or enforcement. Housekeeping and sanitation controls, as well as incontinence-care responsiveness, were described inconsistently across reviews, producing concerns about consistent, reliable personal-care delivery. Activity programming is also described as limited or not meaningfully engaging for some residents, contrasting with other accounts that found adequate activity offerings.

Finally, management and administrative matters appear mixed. Some families praise specific managers and a smooth onboarding process; others describe owner/management turnover and declining operational consistency, as well as concerns about billing transparency and timely responses to family inquiries. There are also references to gaps in emergency-preparedness documentation (for example, routine drill records) and to pet-management or odor-control issues in common areas.

In summary, Caraway Assisted Living presents as a small, caring community with notable strengths in individualized caregiving, dementia support, and a homelike environment. However, persistent operational themes โ€” particularly around dining consistency, medication administration, staffing allocation, personal-care responsiveness, and certain safety practices โ€” warrant direct inquiry during touring and contracting. Prospective families should ask for current staffing ratios, medication-management protocols, dietitian/menu adherence processes, transfer- and fall-prevention procedures, housekeeping schedules, activity calendars, emergency drill records, and examples of recent management changes to help assess whether the facilityโ€™s strong caregiver relationships are supported by consistent operational systems.

    About Caraway Assisted Living

Caraway Assisted Living sits quietly in Elkton, MD, and has provided care for over twenty years in a small, relaxed setting that aims to feel like home, where only sixteen residents live in two adjacent houses called The Cottage and The Lodge, both with their own style-The Cottage has shared and private rooms that overlook rolling hills, while The Lodge offers private rooms surrounded by trees. Staff at Caraway believe in a resident-first approach, focusing on daily needs like bathing, dressing, grooming, hair care, shaving, and oral health, all with round-the-clock help from devoted caregivers who know each person well and keep a low caregiver-to-resident ratio, which means more time and attention for each resident. Residents can find support for mobility, continence, and medication management, with flexible care plans that change if health needs change, and there's an emphasis on keeping independence as much as possible and listening to what each person needs, not just following a routine. People spend time in bright shared spaces, covered patios, and common areas made for socializing, and the environment is very accessible for those who use walkers or wheelchairs, as well as calm, clean, and always odor-free. Caraway makes meals with quality ingredients, focusing on healthy food that still tastes good, and the dining program has actually won awards, along with the activities and friendly staff. As a verified community that follows licensing standards, Caraway offers detailed care plans, medication supervision, and even healthcare management, so residents and families don't worry as much about safety or appointments. The daily schedule has different activities, both to keep people's minds sharp and to build friendships, and there's transportation and parking for outings or appointments, plus reliable Wi-Fi for staying connected. Because the facility is small, staff can really focus on compassion, dignity, respect, and personal freedom, all while keeping things simple and supporting each resident in living the way they want, with help always there, but never taking over their choices or routines.
