    Warm family-owned attentive compassionate care

I placed my mother here and have been very pleased with the warm, family-owned atmosphere and long-tenured, attentive staff who treated her with respect and dignity. The beautiful Gothic Revival building, well-tended grounds, fresh meals, and steady activities (movies, games, live music, family dinners) made her feel at home, and management was professional and communicative. I'm grateful for the compassionate care in her final days and would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

College Manor presents as a family-owned assisted living with a strong emphasis on a home-like environment and individualized resident dignity. Many reviewers highlight the facility's historic Gothic Revival architecture, a stained-glass multipurpose room, and well-tended grounds with a calming stream. These physical attributes, combined with comfortable, well-appointed rooms and a personalized move-in process, create a welcoming setting that several families described as warm and familiar.

Staffing and daily care are frequent points of praise: numerous accounts note long-tenured, attentive employees who provide compassionate, individualized care, strong emotional support at end of life, and a generally respectful tone toward residents. The facility is frequently described as having attentive nursing and a supportive household staff, with examples of prompt assistance and staff who treat residents like family. At the same time, a number of families raised operational concerns about inconsistent responsiveness—particularly overnight—and gaps in clinical oversight. These issues are described as intermittent but substantive: delays in attending to personal-care needs, inconsistent bathing or bedding changes, and situations suggesting insufficient night supervision or staffing coverage.

Dining and activities are strengths for many residents. Several reviewers cited fresh meals, breakfast delivered to rooms, and communal lunches and dinners as positive daily features. The activity program is described as varied and engaging, including bingo, movies, games, live musicians, and special entertainers; these offerings contribute to social life and resident satisfaction. However, reviewers also describe variability in meal quality and occasional service lapses, and some noted disorganization in activity scheduling and calendars that were not consistently updated or well-communicated.

Facility management and operations show a mixed pattern. The family-owned management style is frequently viewed positively for its personal touch, communication during move-in, and overall warmth. Conversely, other accounts point to organizational disorganization, uneven staff professionalism, and maintenance issues, including pest-control concerns and unaddressed repairs. Clinical management concerns were also raised by families who felt medical oversight or nursing follow-through could be improved. Cost was cited as a consideration by some families who felt the price did not always align with their expectations of consistency in care and operations.

Overall, College Manor appears to offer a strong, homelike environment with many committed long-term staff, active programming, attractive historic spaces, and supportive end-of-life care. Prospective residents and families should weigh these strengths against reported variability in night supervision, personal-care consistency, clinical oversight, and maintenance responsiveness. When evaluating the community, it may be helpful to ask about staffing levels and overnight supervision, incontinence- and bedding-change protocols, clinical oversight arrangements, pest-control and maintenance schedules, sample menus and meal-service procedures, and how activity calendars are maintained and communicated.

    About College Manor Assisted Living

College Manor Assisted Living sits in Lutherville Timonium, Maryland, right on 11 acres of peaceful gardens and walking paths, in a big house that used to be a girls' college back in old Lutherville, and the place has a family-owned, home-like feeling that a lot of folks over 90 years old seem to appreciate since most who've stayed there can tell you there's a warmth to it that's hard to find. There are 80 assisted living units, and you can pick either private single rooms or suites, all with private bathrooms, some with kitchenettes, and every room is air-conditioned and comes furnished, so there's comfort and privacy whichever way you go. Residents get three meals daily, prepared with care in a restaurant-style dining room, and dietary needs, like diabetic diets and special restrictions, are part of the plan so everyone eats well, and there's always help with dressing or bathing, getting around, taking medicine, and other daily things, with nurses in charge and doctors visiting when needed, and a staff led by Director of Nursing Jessica Ostendarp and Director of Nursing Operations Cindy Riddick. There's a strong focus on memory care and Alzheimer's support, and College Manor has secure settings, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and personal call systems for safety.

You can see fresh flowers on tables and maybe somebody's playing on the grand piano, or a group is heading outside for gardening, a stroll through the landscaped grounds, or catching a planned trip into town, because there's always something happening like activities led by Jessica Riddick, who organizes day trips, social meetings, painting, games, gardening, and even shopping, so it's easy to keep busy or be with friends. The library, activity center, gaming room, computer center, wellness center, and beauty salon are open, and folks can take part in tai chi, physical therapy, fitness, or join a book club. Extended family-assisted living, independent living, nursing home care, and even respite care-short term or long term, for surgery recovery or just some help after an illness-are available, and you'll find every resident can set their own daily schedule.

The care fits what each person needs and isn't just one-size-fits-all, so seniors get personal help without giving up independence, and the community puts a lot into helping folks feel comfortable and connected, with healthy meals, regular social activities, transportation for appointments or shopping, and plenty of places to relax, from sunny courtyards with seating to a country view out the back. The facility is run by a steady team, with Robert Renaud overseeing operations, John Horine as managing director, Jane Banks as owner, and a contact point known as Bar Tender, all focused on making life safe and enjoyable, not fancy or fussy. Housekeeping, linen, and maintenance are routine, and families can take virtual tours if they want a look before coming out in person, which is handy. College Manor doesn't put on a big show, but it does offer a reliable, peaceful, and caring spot for seniors who want help but still like a place that feels a bit like home, with enough happening to keep minds and hands busy day after day.
