    Warm, clean, caring family-run community

I toured this family-run community and immediately felt welcomed-from the smiling front desk to an accommodating director. The bright, home-like facility is clean and spacious, with compassionate, nurse-led staff who keep residents safe, fed with home-cooked meals, and engaged through varied activities and outings. My mom settled in quickly and seems happy and secure; staff communicate well and genuinely care. Overall, a very positive experience and I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviewers convey a largely positive view of College Manor’s day-to-day living environment, with repeated emphasis on warm, attentive staff, a family-owned culture, and an environment that aims to feel home-like. Families frequently describe prompt, accommodating administrative interactions and nursing oversight that gives a sense of safety and reliability. The community presents as socially active, with a steady calendar of events, regular off-site excursions and outside entertainers that support resident engagement.

Care and staff: Caregiving staff are described as compassionate, patient, and welcoming; nursing leadership is noted as experienced and hands-on. Communication from administration and the head nurse appears responsive, and reviewers highlight individual staff members who go beyond routine duties. The common pattern is one of personalized attention and a family-style approach; however, several comments raise concerns about staffing levels and limited clinical coverage, suggesting the community may be better suited to independent and lower-dependency residents than to those with higher medical needs.

Dining and activities: Dining is a consistent strength — meals are characterized as home-cooked, appealing, and balanced, and the dining room functions as a social hub that helps residents form friendships. Activity programming is robust on paper, with frequent events, themed parties, entertainers, and routine outings. That said, activity delivery appears mixed: some programming is delivered off-site with transportation pickup, and there are references to limited in-house therapy or structured rehabilitation. Prospective families should clarify on-site versus off-site activity availability and transportation arrangements during a tour.

Facilities and maintenance: The facility is generally described as spacious, attractively decorated, and clean, with well-kept grounds and a large welcoming lobby. At the same time, there are consistent notes about an older building and variability in upkeep; some reviewers felt portions were not as well maintained as comparable communities. Room sizes and common areas are often highlighted as generous, but the overall physical plant reflects an earlier era in part of the facility’s furnishings and design.

Management and notable patterns: Management’s family-owned approach and early, cautious infection-control decisions during COVID are cited as reassuring by multiple families. Therapy services (PT/OT) are noted as outsourced, and clinical resources appear limited in scope at times, which aligns with comments about needing supplemental private caregivers for higher-acuity needs. Value is repeatedly mentioned — reviewers perceive the community as offering good services for the price — but this is balanced by operational trade-offs such as staffing levels and an aging facility.

Recommendation: College Manor presents as a warm, activity-rich community with strong interpersonal staff–resident relationships, good dining, and an engaged social calendar. Prospective residents and families should verify clinical staffing ratios, on-site rehabilitation availability, and maintenance practices relative to their care needs. For independent or low-dependency residents seeking social engagement and a family-like setting, the community is a competitive option; for individuals requiring more intensive clinical support, families should confirm whether supplemental private care or higher-level clinical resources would be necessary.

    About College Manor

College Manor sits on 11 acres in old Lutherville in a historic building that used to be a girls' college, and inside you'll find a homey, country-style house where most folks are over 90, with a family-owned and family-run feeling that's been steady for 64 years. The place offers private rooms or fancy suites, with gardens and walking paths outside, and inside there's a grand piano, a painting space, areas for tai chi, and a library; residents can enjoy restaurant-style dining with three nutritious daily meals made with good ingredients and plenty of options for dietary needs. College Manor covers independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing home care, respite and rehabilitative care, and continuing care retirement community options, all in one spot, so whether someone just wants to be independent and join in on activities when they want, or needs more help with bathing, dressing, meals, medication, or memory issues, there's support in place with a caring, professional staff-there's even a nurse running the community and doctors can come in to provide home care. The staff covers nursing, therapies, housework, maintenance and activities, with different directors in charge, plus there's an activities director who runs a packed calendar, so residents can do painting, exercise, tai chi, or just enjoy music, and there are always social trips for shopping or cultural outings, plus room for visiting friends and family to share a meal in the dining area or take a walk in the courtyard. Safety's covered, with personal call systems, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems in all rooms, and the family atmosphere means staff will know the residents well, tending to needs big and small, from physical exercises and nutritional support to handling medication and care plans for those with Alzheimer's or dementia. College Manor has a real extended family feeling, offers private and secure living, supports daily living activities, and tries to make sure everyone can keep their independence and dignity for as long as possible, and with the gardens and cozy spaces, plus a schedule of events and good food, it feels more like a long-time family home than a big institution.
