    Beautiful facility, severe medical neglect

I liked the beautiful, modern building - spacious rooms, landscaped gardens, water views and engaging activities - and several caregivers were kind and attentive. But I experienced serious medical neglect: a nurse failed to monitor a dangerously low heart rate (44 bpm), a rushed late discharge forced me to call 911 and ultimately led to a pacemaker; communication, transportation for appointments and social-work support were often unprofessional or nonexistent, and staffing felt inadequate. Despite some good staff, I cannot recommend this facility.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across these reviews is highly mixed, with strong praise for the facility’s physical environment, many elements of care, and social programming, but also serious and repeated concerns about staffing consistency, communication, and isolated but significant clinical failures. Multiple reviewers describe Waterview Lodge as a modern, attractive, waterfront facility with tasteful interiors, landscaped grounds, spacious rooms and common areas, and an odor-free environment. These physical attributes are consistently cited as a strength. Many families and residents report compassionate, attentive, and professional nursing and caregiving staff who deliver personalized, dignified care. Several reviewers described the community as warm and welcoming, with residents feeling at home and referring to staff as a "second family." The facility’s activity programming and social events are frequently noted as engaging and varied, contributing to a strong sense of community and resident involvement.

Dining and nutrition receive largely positive remarks: numerous reviewers praise delicious, nutritious meals tailored to dietary needs served in a pleasant dining environment. Rehabilitation and therapy services receive favorable mention from some families (physical therapy staff "pretty good"). Administrative involvement and supportive interactions from certain staff members, including social work support for home-use items, are also highlighted. The facility is recommended by many reviewers, including those who considered Waterview Lodge the best among facilities they toured, and is noted for supporting individuals with disabilities.

Despite these positives, a consistent and concerning theme is variability in staff quality and chronic understaffing. Multiple reviews report that staff are overworked, which in turn has led to missed medications, poor personal hygiene care for some residents, and inconsistent attention. Several families recount rude or disrespectful interactions with staff and poor sensitivity to family concerns. Communication problems recur as a prominent issue: reviewers describe non-existent or delayed communication from nurses and doctors, phone lines being out for extended periods (one report of no phone lines for over six months), unanswered messages, and general difficulty obtaining timely updates. These communication failures exacerbate family frustration and reduce confidence in clinical oversight.

More alarmingly, some reviews describe serious clinical lapses. One account details a nurse failing to adequately monitor a resident’s heart rate (reported as 44 bpm), a rushed discharge, subsequent emergency care, and eventual pacemaker placement. Other reports accuse the facility of denying basic medical care, failing to arrange emergency transportation or appointments, and exhibiting substandard treatment in particular cases. Such incidents are described as leading to severe outcomes and contribute to strongly negative recommendations from some families. These reports indicate potential safety and quality-of-care variability that prospective residents and families should investigate closely.

Operational and management concerns also surface repeatedly. Several reviewers complain about admissions issues and perceived misinformation: claims that the website indicated Medicaid acceptance while the facility was taking private-pay admissions only, causing delays and back-and-forth during admissions. Others describe discouraging referral behavior, negative word-of-mouth, and admissions processing problems (including late-hours discharge processing). There is also a pattern of polarized experiences — some families report excellent care and hands-on administration, while others describe the facility as having "horrendous staff" and poor management. This variability suggests inconsistent training, staffing levels, or supervisory oversight across shifts or units.

In conclusion, Waterview Lodge presents a strong physical environment, robust activity programming, and many examples of compassionate, high-quality care. These strengths are weighed against notable and recurring concerns about staffing consistency, communication failures, occasional serious clinical lapses, and problematic admissions/eligibility messaging. Prospective residents and families should factor in the facility’s attractive amenities and many positive caregiver reports, but also conduct careful, specific inquiries about current staffing ratios, clinical oversight practices, communication protocols (including phone reliability), medication management, emergency procedures, and the facility’s current Medicaid acceptance status. In-person visits, meetings with nursing leadership, and references from recent families can help clarify whether the facility’s positive attributes are matched by reliable, consistent care in the particular unit or time frame under consideration.
