    Kind staff, but unsafe management

I had a mixed experience. Many nurses, CNAs and therapists were genuinely kind, helpful and skilled - rehab, food and cleanliness were often excellent and residents seemed happy. However I also saw serious problems: inconsistent staff professionalism, shortages/no weekend manager, missed meds and assistance (leading to falls), rooms ransacked and items stolen, poor COVID/isolation practices, and an unresponsive administration with little accountability. I'd visit and judge carefully - don't send a loved one without confirming security, staffing and management follow-through.

    Summary review

The reviews for Nevins Nursing & Rehab Center are strongly polarized, with a substantial number of highly positive accounts praising the care, and a concerning cluster of very negative reports that raise safety and management red flags. On the positive side, many reviewers describe staff as compassionate, attentive, and professional — specifically naming nurses, CNAs, social workers, and therapists as excellent. Several families report great rehabilitation outcomes and highlight an effective physical therapy program. Cleanliness, good food, smooth admissions, hospice care delivered with dignity, and a family-like atmosphere are recurring favorable themes. Some visitors note recent renovations and an improved ambience, as well as convenient parking and strong, long-term relationships between staff and residents. There are also mentions of good communication and responsiveness from staff and teams who are willing to make changes for residents and families.

Counterbalancing those positives are multiple serious and recurring negative themes. Numerous reviews allege theft of personal items (watches, wallets, toiletries, clothing), rooms being ransacked, and damaged belongings; these accounts frequently pair with accusations of unresponsive administration and a lack of accountability. Several reviews describe dangerous care failures: neglect in assisting residents to the bathroom, missed medications (including after major surgery), falls that led to rehospitalization, and in at least one account, a fall that preceded death. These are not isolated, minor complaints but very serious safety-related criticisms that dramatically contrast with the glowing reports. Other operational concerns include noise disturbances (TVs left on), staff availability gaps (no weekend manager reported), inconsistent staff professionalism (some staff praised while others described as unprofessional or poorly dressed), and reports of restricted visitation or being turned away due to capacity issues.

Infection control and COVID-related issues appear in both positive and negative contexts. A portion of reviewers said the facility gave them peace of mind during the COVID pandemic, while others reported improper isolation practices and COVID spread tied to poor cleaning or inadequate infection-control measures. Management responsiveness is similarly mixed: some families commend prompt, helpful administrative guidance and smooth transitions, while others describe an unresponsive administration, unresolved grievances, state investigations, and no accountability after serious incidents. There are also allegations of discriminatory behavior by staff in at least one review.

Facility attributes and amenities receive mixed feedback. Many reviewers praise the dining options, cleanliness, activities, and social environment — saying residents can socialize and enjoy life. Conversely, some mention crowded or older rooms, a “dark” interior prior to renovation, the need for improved air conditioning, and security lapses that allowed theft or unauthorized access to personal items. The overall picture is a facility that can provide excellent, even outstanding care for some residents but that also, according to numerous reviews, has lapses in safety, security, staffing consistency, and management oversight that have led to serious negative outcomes.

Taken together, the reviews indicate a facility with notable strengths — especially in hands-on caregiving, rehab services, food, and the experience of many families — but also with severe and recurring concerns that should not be ignored. The pattern of polarized experiences suggests significant variability in shifts, teams, and possibly unit-level management. Prospective residents and families should weigh both sides: ask for specifics about theft-prevention and room security, medication-administration checks, staffing levels and weekend coverage, incident reporting and follow-up procedures, and infection-control protocols. If possible, an in-person tour, conversations with nurses and administrators about recent incidents and corrective actions, and checking state inspection reports would help clarify whether the facility's strong positive aspects are consistently delivered and whether the serious negative patterns have been addressed.

About Nevins Nursing & Rehab Center

Nevins Nursing & Rehab Center in Methuen, Massachusetts, has been serving the community since 1906 as a nonprofit and takes care of both short-term rehab and long-term residential needs, so you see all sorts of people coming in for a short recovery or to stay longer when they need help with daily life, and the 153-bed skilled nursing and rehab center sits behind Nevins Manor, which is a 44-unit HUD subsidized senior apartment building that's closer to the road, so those apartments are right there for folks who want some independence but still need support. The campus also includes Element Care at Nevins and offers individual-centered programs for many different health needs, including special care for memory loss and dementia, along with physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and they take part in things like Quality & Wellness Initiatives such as the Fight the Flu Campaign and Sepsis Smart, which shows they're paying attention to big health issues. People can join in activities like bingo, exercise programs, or crafts, and there are volunteers who come around to play cards, read, or just spend time with residents, giving the place a bit of a community feel, and there's a nice living room and lounge, plus an outdoor courtyard so folks can get fresh air. Meals get prepared right there with attention to nutrition, and there's laundry, a podiatrist, and help with medicine, plus options for end-of-life and hospice care, respite for caregivers, and transportation if someone needs to go out for appointments. The staff pays careful attention to safety, using signs and universal precautions for visitors and care, with optional face masks since the pandemic, and the center supports both short and long stays for people needing assisted living, skilled nursing, or just some help while they recover. Nevins Nursing & Rehab Center includes Nevins Manor and Element Care as part of their services and keeps a focus on community, quality of care, and personal choice, and the staff tries to support independence but is there to help with daily care, keeping things as comfortable and supportive as they can for both the residents and their families.
