    Caring staff but chronic understaffing

I had a mixed experience: the nurses, CNAs, kitchen and therapy teams were often caring, professional and went above and beyond - the facility is generally clean, the meals and activities are excellent, and the setting is lovely. However, chronic short-staffing, poor leadership/communication and occasional lapses in care (missed meds, hygiene/ infection-control issues, rude staff, billing/transfer headaches and frustrating visitation/meeting arrangements) made parts of the stay unsafe and stressful. I'd recommend cautiously - great when fully staffed, but watch closely and ask hard questions about staffing, billing and care coordination.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across reviews for Nemasket Healthcare Center is highly mixed, with a strong polarization between reviewers who praise the facility and those who report serious problems. Many reviewers highlight exceptional, compassionate hands-on care by nurses, CNAs, therapists, and administrative assistants, along with excellent onsite rehabilitation services and a robust activities program. Conversely, other reviewers describe troubling incidents including neglect, medication mishaps, infection-control lapses, and leadership failures. These divergent accounts suggest that experiences may vary considerably by unit, shift, or time period.

Care quality and clinical services show a bifurcated pattern. Numerous reviews commend skilled nursing care, knowledgeable nurses, and therapy teams (PT/OT) that go above and beyond, with some families saying staff saved a loved one’s life and provided extraordinary stimulation and attention. Multiple reviewers also singled out CNAs as compassionate and attentive. At the same time, a substantial number of reviews describe serious clinical concerns: medications not given, potential medication safety threats, medical and therapy record errors, insufficient physician presence (noted as weekly only), infection-control non-compliance (gowning lapses) that may have contributed to spread, and several reports of resident harm or death. These clinical complaints represent high-severity issues that families flagged repeatedly.

Staff behavior, staffing levels, and workplace culture are also contentious. Positive accounts emphasize helpful, kind, and efficient staff, teamwork, and a responsive, hands-on hospital administrator. Negative reviews point to chronic short-staffing, high turnover, instances of rude or abusive behavior (including a CNA yelling at a resident and an administrator insulting a family member), and perceived laziness or neglect on shifts. Several reviewers described retaliation or lack of accountability when problems were raised. The mixed reports suggest variability in staff performance and possible leadership or morale issues that affect care consistency.

Facility environment and cleanliness are generally praised but not uniformly. Many reviews describe the building and rooms as clean, well-maintained, elegant, and spotless, with pristine bathrooms, single-floor convenience, and attractive natural views and courtyard spaces. The kitchen and dining are often commended for restaurant-quality meals and prideful staff. However, other reviews report urine odor in areas, trash behind nightstands, dirt and ant mounds, and questionable cleanliness of personal items like toothbrushes. Meal quality is usually a plus, but a few reviewers complained about meals not being hot or missing hot meals for extended periods. These contradictions again point to inconsistent performance across time or units.

Activities, social engagement, and rehabilitative support are frequently listed as positives: active programs, continuous stimulation, and strong therapy leading to successful discharges. Many families felt the facility provided a "home away from home," with staff focused on residents’ happiness. In contrast, some reviews reported residents being bedridden with lack of activities and inadequate visitation arrangements, which may correlate with staffing shortages or particular care teams.

Management, communication, and administrative concerns form a notable theme among negative reviews. Criticisms include poor communication with families, inflexible scheduling for plan-of-care meetings, ineffective conference calls for those hard of hearing, coordination issues across departments, and alleged administrative barriers such as Medicaid transfer limitations. A few reviews mention Whittier Healthcare (the parent company) and raise concerns in that context. There are also allegations of billing irregularities (split bills/scams) with at least one reviewer claiming a state investigation. These administrative and leadership complaints increase perceived risk for families who need reliable oversight and transparent processes.

Safety incidents are among the most serious concerns raised: reports include residents left on toilets and subsequently dying, being made to wait in wet clothes, threats around medication theft, and at least one account linking infection spread to gowning non-compliance. Such reports contrast sharply with other testimonials describing life-saving care. Taken together, these safety-related accounts warrant careful attention by prospective families and regulators.

In summary, Nemasket Healthcare Center receives highly divergent reviews. Strengths repeatedly cited are cleanliness (in many reports), a pleasant setting, dedicated and skilled CNAs/nurses, strong therapy and activities, good meals, and responsive staff on many shifts. Weaknesses flagged repeatedly include leadership and communication failures, short-staffing and turnover, clinical safety issues (medication administration, physician availability, infection control), and sporadic lapses in cleanliness and meal service. Prospective residents and families should weigh these mixed signals, ask specific questions about staffing ratios, oversight and incident history, infection-control policies, physician availability, and administrative procedures, and consider visiting multiple units at different times to assess consistency before deciding.
