    Excellent care, abrupt corporate closure

I lived at this Needham facility and the on-site staff were outstanding - kind, well-trained nurses and consistent aides, genuinely caring, low turnover, and great about keeping families in the loop. The building was clean, my one-bedroom was spacious and comfortable, the food was tasty, activities and the fitness program were thoughtful, and daily car service plus the convenient location near shops and a park made life easy. Unfortunately corporate abruptly decided to close the facility on short notice with no resident counselors or transition support, which caused a lot of stress and felt profit-driven. I highly recommend the staff and the care, but be aware of corporate instability.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is strongly positive about the hands-on, day-to-day experience at Kindred Assisted Living Avery Crossings, while raising a serious operational concern about a corporate decision to close the facility on short notice. Reviewers repeatedly praise the direct-care staff, describing them as caring, kind, well-trained, reliable and attentive. Nurses and aides are noted as consistent, which contributes to an upbeat atmosphere and happy residents. Multiple reviewers emphasize that staff keep families in the loop, are helpful and accommodating, and provide top-notch care.

Care quality and staffing are the clearest strengths. Comments call out attentive nurses and consistent aides, low staff turnover, and genuine concern for residents’ wellbeing. Families appreciated communication and the way staff handled daily care and activities. The positive staff experience is the dominant theme across summaries: staff are described as terrific, accommodating, and professional—factors that reviewers link directly to resident satisfaction.

The physical environment, services and amenities also receive favorable mention. Reviewers note clean facilities, spacious one-bedroom apartments, and a comfortable environment. The community is described as conveniently located near shopping and a park, and practical services such as daily car service and respite care are available. Dining is frequently praised—food is called tasty and of excellent quality. Programmatic offerings are another strength: reviewers mention thoughtful activities and an excellent fitness program that contribute to resident engagement.

Despite the many positives, the most significant and recurring negative theme concerns management-level decisions. Several reviewers describe a corporate decision to close the facility—identified as being in Needham, MA—on short notice, which created substantial stress and disruption for residents and families. Reviewers say there were no resident counselors or formal transition supports provided during the closure process, and some perceive the decision as profit-driven. This management action stands in contrast to the high marks for on-site staff and has clearly affected the overall assessment for those directly impacted.

In summary, Kindred Assisted Living Avery Crossings is consistently described as delivering excellent day-to-day care: compassionate, stable staff; clean, comfortable living spaces; good food; meaningful activities; and useful services like transportation and respite care. Those themes make the location highly recommended by many reviewers. However, potential residents and families should weigh this positive daily experience against the reported corporate-level instability and the lack of formal transition support in the face of a sudden closure. Prospective families would be wise to ask direct questions about corporate policies, the ownership/operator stability, and contingency/transition plans before committing—especially given the documented stress caused by the abrupt closure in Needham, MA.

About Kindred Assisted Living Avery Crossings

Kindred Assisted Living Avery Crossings, which sits empty now in a red brick building at 110 West St, Needham Heights, used to offer senior care with a focus on personal care, medication management, daily activities, and meals, and for years folks in the area knew it as a place where staff looked after residents with kindness, giving person-centered support whether someone needed help with memory loss, assisted living, or wanted to live more independently. The community had 155 units at its peak, with a mix of independent apartments, assisted living, and special memory care, all designed to help folks stay as independent as possible for as long as possible, and people could choose from private or semi-private suites, all with accessible bathrooms and basic kitchenettes, and there was round-the-clock support. At one point Kindred also provided full nursing care, including help for folks with complicated health problems, plus they took care of things like wound care and rehabilitation after illness. There were regular programs like happy hours, music, art, gardening, and educational talks, along with spiritual support, visits from a rabbi, and a professional chef who prepared meals you could get all day, including for special diets like low sodium and gluten free, and people could eat with friends in a dining room or ask for room service. Memory care residents had safe, secure areas with special activities to enhance memory, lots of supervision, and support from staff who understood dementia and Alzheimer's. The place stood out for wheelchair access, Wi-Fi, beauty salon services, and day trips out in the community, and family members could visit often and even eat with their relatives. Staff kept the place clean, friendly, and approachable, and the building was part of a group of facilities nearby, all providing different levels of support. The building itself has a long history, first built as part of the old Carter Mill in the 1950s, and has changed hands a few times, most recently closing its doors in February 2018, with plans for new redevelopment and possible demolition still getting sorted out. People in Needham once counted it as part of a group of locations like Avery Manor and North Hill for seniors needing care, but now the site stays quiet, with talk of new housing or another care community popping up in the future, but for now, it's just waiting for its next chapter.
