    Supportive community, costly maintenance concerns

I was impressed by the knowledgeable, friendly staff (the Life Experience Director is outstanding), beautiful grounds and cottages, and fun, well-run activities - the community feels supportive and family-like. However, I'm concerned about high costs (steep rent increases, high fees, services removed) and slow/unresponsive maintenance (ongoing repairs, dishwasher issues). Safety/parking is awkward (cement platform, no sign-in/out monitoring). New owners are updating the place and events look promising, but I'd be cautious if you're on a fixed income.

    About Southwick Village Residential Living

Southwick Village Residential Living sits on 46 acres of New England countryside filled with tall maple trees, gardens, and views of western Massachusetts, and there's a clear sense of calm when you wander around and see all the green space, and then you notice the cottages and apartments, many with sunrooms, private garages, chef's kitchens, and patios, where people can relax alone or have neighbors drop by since it's a safety-minded 55-plus community where folks can stay social or private, depending on what they want, and nobody has to worry about shoveling snow, mowing lawns, or fixing a leaky roof since maintenance, landscaping, and snow plowing are all included. Residents choose from independent living, active adult, enhanced living, assisted living, or memory care, so if someone starts out healthy and active but needs more help later, they don't have to move away, and there's even skilled nursing available right on site. The kitchens in each unit come with appliances like dishwashers, washers and dryers, and microwaves, and every home has heat, air conditioning, and plenty of closet space, plus cable and high-speed internet come with the place, and people like that there aren't any big upfront fees or buy-ins, so moving in is easier for most. The dining room is run restaurant-style, meals are made from scratch every day, and there's a big focus on using fresh and local ingredients, and if someone wants to eat in their room or host a guest, that's possible too; for folks who like company during meals, there are communal tables and every dish is served hot. The Social House clubhouse is where people hold events, join clubs, or just sit around together, while the art studio has painting classes most days, and the gym is full of equipment for stretching, Tai Chi, and other fitness classes, and outside there are walking trails, gardens, and a nearby 18-hole golf course for anyone who still likes to swing a club. Tools for safety and security include emergency response systems and regular wellness checks, and when a resident needs a hand with things like medication or getting dressed, trained staff are always nearby, and memory care areas are designed to help adults living with dementia or Alzheimer's. Pets are allowed with some rules-no large dogs-and residents care for their own animals, but visitors can bring pets along. Spiritual needs are met through scheduled religious services, and there's help for veterans too. Activities fill the calendar, from games and educational programs to seasonal events, music, book clubs, and gardening, and there's room for private hobbies as well. Parking's easy with attached garages or a big lot, and people come and go on their own schedule since visitation is flexible. Housekeeping, laundry, and linen changes are all taken care of as part of the fee, so residents can spend more time enjoying hobbies, meeting friends, or just taking in the view, and it feels like a place where folks can live quietly or stay busy, all in a setting that values safety, comfort, and personal choice.
