    Warm professional care helped mom

I'm grateful for my experience at Westwood. The staff-especially Sasha and Don-were warm, professional and attentive, creating a clean, safe, family-like atmosphere. Therapy helped my mom improve so she could be with family again, and intake/office staff gave clear, patient explanations. I'd recommend it; I see real improvement and strong potential.

    Summary of reviews

The review set for Westwood Nursing Center is highly polarized, with families and former residents describing both positive caregiving relationships and repeated operational concerns. Positive comments emphasize compassionate individual staff members—CNAs, therapists, social workers, and a few named employees received specific praise for responsiveness, personal attention, and supportive interactions. Several accounts also note active therapy and activity programming, a welcoming reception experience, and instances of clean, home-like common areas. Some families reported visible management efforts and newer staff who appear to be improving service quality.

Care quality and clinical oversight present mixed impressions. Many reviewers praised individual caregivers for attentiveness and patience, while a substantial number described delays in attending to resident needs, inconsistent medication administration, and gaps in monitoring. These operational weaknesses were commonly linked to perceived staffing shortages, particularly on weekends and during off-shifts, which reviewers attributed to longer response times and missed or delayed treatments. Concerns about medication handling and clinical follow-up were prominent and, in a few accounts, associated with hospital transfers and urgent clinical events.

Dining and activities also show variability. Therapy and activity staff were credited with helping residents regain function and participate in social programming. At the same time, reviewers raised issues with food quality, menu freshness, and portions; some highlighted food-safety and dining continuity problems. Activity engagement appears present in some areas but inconsistent across the facility according to different accounts.

Facility condition and equipment maintenance were frequent concerns. Reviewers described aging infrastructure, missing or damaged fixtures, and unreliable mechanical equipment such as transportation lifts. Sanitation and housekeeping standards were characterized as inconsistent, with specific complaints about cleanliness levels and supply availability. Privacy issues were noted due to multiple beds in single rooms and limited use of privacy curtains or locking bathroom doors, which affects resident dignity and infection-control practices.

Management, communication, and administrative processes were another recurring theme. Positive notes reference helpful social-work support and individual managers or staff who facilitate admissions and family communication. Conversely, many reviews criticized discharge coordination, financial-handling processes, and responsiveness to family concerns. There are mentions of regulatory scrutiny, a low state rating, fines, and serious allegations in some accounts; language used by families suggests that these matters have prompted external involvement. Use of the term "allegations" is applied here because some accounts describe incidents that extend beyond operational shortcomings into potentially reportable staff conduct and legal/regulatory areas.

Notable patterns: experiences vary widely—some families describe Westwood as a second home with long-tenured, devoted staff, while others report consistent operational failures that they view as safety risks. The divergence suggests uneven performance across units, shifts, and teams. Prospective residents and families should weigh the positive reports of individual caregiver compassion and therapy outcomes against repeated operational concerns: staffing consistency, clinical oversight, sanitation and maintenance, privacy in rooming, and administrative responsiveness. Visiting in person, speaking directly with social-work and clinical leadership, reviewing recent inspection and enforcement records, and observing multiple shifts will help families form a more complete, up-to-date assessment.

    About Westwood Nursing Center

Westwood Nursing Center sits in a quiet spot in the Harmony Village neighborhood of Detroit at 16588 Schaefer Hwy, where seniors find care that's dependable and steady, and the place handles both short-term and long-term stays for people with physical or mental challenges, which can be comforting for families needing more support than they can give. Westwood accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance, which eases the financial worry for many families, and it's licensed by the State of Michigan. Residents stay in private or semi-private rooms, and there's a secured dementia unit for those needing extra supervision, so everyone can feel safer and more at ease.

There's help around the clock from registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants, always on hand in case you need them, and the staff's got training for every situation you can think of. The facility offers housekeeping every day and does personal laundry, so folks don't have to stress about daily chores, and meals get prepared fresh three times daily, with menus posted each week and snacks available before bed, so there's always something to eat, and those who want a bit of a restaurant feel can choose fine dining options, which some people enjoy. The center provides transportation to appointments with no extra charge, and the housekeeping team keeps the place clean and organized, which helps make things comfortable, and that's especially nice for folks who can't manage those tasks anymore.

Residents can join different recreational activities to help keep their bodies moving and foster social ties; you'll see regular exercise classes, group games, and social gatherings that happen often. The facility has beauty and barber services, which lets folks get their hair or nails done right there, and that can bring a sense of normalcy and dignity to the day, and it also has extra healthcare support with on-site physical, speech, and occupational therapy, focusing on helping residents regain strength and daily skills, especially after a stroke or injury, so everyone can work on keeping as much independence as possible for as long as they want.

The facility offers in-house clinical labs, X-rays, pharmacy services, and hemodialysis through Concerto Renal Services, so there's less need to travel away for treatments, and there's support for mental health, dental, vision, podiatry, and a social worker as well as physician care. Legal protections based on gender identity, orientation, and source of income help everyone feel they belong, and some staff may speak languages in addition to English depending on who's working that day. Westwood has resources and guidance for long-term care insurance and family caregiving, so families can find the help they need in managing all the choices that come with aging.

The center supports seniors through independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care, though there aren't a lot of details given about those specific programs, and right now, it's not accepting new residents. It's got a community rating of 3.6 stars out of 103 reviews, which suggests people's experiences vary, and that's important for families to consider. There aren't many details about building features, parking, or special amenities, and some information about office hours or languages can change depending on who's there, but the focus clearly remains on steady care and support for seniors in a peaceful setting.
