I live here and am very pleased - the staff are warm, caring, and attentive, the community feels like family, dining and activities are very good, and the campus offers many amenities with seamless care levels. Clean, safe, and welcoming, it's been a wonderful fit for me and I happily recommend it to others seeking an active, supportive senior living community.

    Summary of reviews

Freedom Village is repeatedly described as a well-equipped, resort-style retirement community with a broad continuum of care under one roof. The campus offers a wide suite of amenities — extensive fitness facilities, an indoor pool and hot tubs, multiple dining rooms, a movie theater, woodworking and craft spaces, salon/barber services, a café, library and on-site bank — and many reviewers emphasize the convenience of transportation and proximity to downtown and scenic river views. Apartment units range from compact to spacious with kitchenettes, and the community supports pet-friendly policies and active social programming.

Care and staffing receive mixed but substantial praise. Many reviewers highlight compassionate, long-tenured staff who know residents by name, attentive CNAs, and strong rehabilitation and physical-therapy services. There is consistent mention of on-site nursing coverage and a caregiving culture that residents and families find reassuring. At the same time, recurring operational concerns surface around staffing variability, response times to call lights or requests, and occasional delays in medication administration; reviewers describe these as issues affecting consistency of care rather than the absence of professional capability.

Dining and activity programming are prominent strengths. The community emphasizes restaurant-style dining with an expansive and varied menu, and several reviews call out chef-driven offerings and multiple dining atmospheres. Activity programming is broad — from organized outings, bus trips, and local shopping to daily classes, gardens, card games, and intergenerational initiatives — contributing to an engaged social environment. That said, there are repeated comments that the facility uses centralized meal preparation, which some residents experience as less fresh or reheated; server training and meal consistency are also noted as variable.

Facility features and layout produce both positive and negative impressions. The seven-story concrete building, grand atrium, and large common spaces are praised for aesthetics and programming capacity, while others find the scale institutional and less home-like. Practical issues such as slow elevators, limited garage options, and discomfort during wheelchair transport to outings have been raised. Housekeeping and laundry services are generally appreciated when delivered, but reviewers also report occasions when contracted services were inconsistent.

Management and operational patterns show strengths and areas for due diligence. Several reviewers compliment administrative accessibility and proactive problem-solving, while other accounts indicate gaps between sales/marketing promises and day-to-day operations, inconsistent incident reporting, and communication breakdowns with families. There are references to leadership or ownership changes coinciding with perceived operational variability; more seriously, a small number of reviews describe medication-management and safety incidents that prospective families should investigate further.

Bottom line: Freedom Village offers a rich amenity set, robust rehab services, and a socially active community with many staff described as caring and skilled. Prospective residents and families should verify financial terms and payment options, observe staffing levels at different times of day (including weekends), sample a meal service, and ask about incident-reporting procedures and medication-management protocols to ensure the community’s operational performance matches its amenities and marketing.

    About Freedom Village

Freedom Village sits along the Black River, close to downtown Holland, Michigan, and just a few blocks from Lake Michigan, so folks who like to walk or head into town for shops or art galleries find it's in a handy spot. The campus provides several types of care, all in one place, so someone starts off living independently and, when more help's needed-things like assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's or dementia, or skilled nursing-it's a simple switch without having to leave the community. Freedom Village works in connection with Corewell Health, including the Corewell Health Geriatric and Special Care center right on the campus, which means access to more medical support if needed, especially for higher-level health issues.

The place has many amenities, like a two-story gymnasium with plenty of exercise equipment, a pool for swimming, an indoor walking track for those who want to keep moving without worrying about the weather, and a fitness trainer for help and advice. You'll find six dining rooms on the grounds, plus an American Bistro that serves sit-down meals from seven in the morning until eight at night, and there are even private dining rooms if residents want to host a group or family. Nutritious meals are part of the routine, and there's a focus on taste as much as good ingredients. Living options cover a wide span: folks have choices from independent living in roomy apartments to assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and rehab, all under one roof, as part of a Life Plan Community, so moving from one type of support to another can happen as a person's health changes.

People living here get support with daily needs, like dressing or bathing, if they want it, plus transportation is available; a big bus is used for trips out of the area and smaller vans with wheelchair lifts help with local errands. The staff organizes activities throughout the week so there's always something social, physical, or creative to take part in, whether it's a wellness program, games, or arts, and there are lots of photos and videos in the online gallery for families wanting a peek at what life looks like. Freedom Village has a MoneyGauge calculator online to help see which apartments might fit a budget, which can make planning easier. When it comes to staying comfortable as needs change, Freedom Village lets folks stay somewhere familiar without feeling forced to leave for more care, with all kinds of support and many features that help people stay active and connected.
