    Wonderful staff, food, activities, grounds

I'm very pleased with this community - the staff are consistently caring and helpful, the food is excellent, and there are abundant activities and beautiful, well-kept lakefront grounds. Move-in was smooth, apartments are comfortable with safety features and balconies, leadership communicates well, and I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Shorehaven presents as a well-kept, lakefront independent/assisted living community with many features families value: an attractive setting and grounds, a formal dining room with varied menus, a wide range of social activities and outings, and numerous on-site amenities such as a salon, rehab/exercise room, library and transportation services. Safety features — including in-apartment emergency pendants and attentive staff — are consistently noted, and many families described a welcoming, family-like atmosphere that supported residents’ social engagement and quality of life.

Staff quality is the facility’s most frequently cited strength. Reviewers commonly praised caregivers, reception staff and leadership for being compassionate, communicative and accessible. Several accounts describe effective move-in support and ongoing family communication. At the same time, there is a pattern of variability in day-to-day caregiving: some families reported aides who were inconsistent in proactive assistance, delays in routine attention, or uneven assistance with basic needs. This variability appears most consequential for residents with increasing care needs, and a few families described situations where Shorehaven’s clinical capabilities did not match higher-acuity requirements.

Dining and activities are central to the community experience. Many residents and family members praised homemade-style meals, abundant menu choices and a pleasant dining environment; activity offerings range from exercise and games to off-site restaurant and shopping trips. However, reviewers’ impressions of food quality were not uniform — while many described high-quality meals, others expressed dissatisfaction with menu items or limited fresh produce — and meal satisfaction may vary by day or by cook. Activity schedules are robust in typical conditions but were noted to be subject to interruption during public-health restrictions.

Facilities and apartments earn frequent compliments for cleanliness, tasteful public spaces and attractive outdoor areas beside the pond or lake. At the same time, some units and building areas show their age: reviewers noted smaller room footprints, older carpeting or finishes in certain apartments, and an incremental need for updates in parts of the property. Housekeeping service is generally provided, though some families pointed to inconsistent thoroughness (missed dusting, occasional rushed cleaning).

Operational and policy concerns appear in several recurring themes. Shorehaven’s pricing and periodic rent increases led some families to question value for cost; advertised starting rates and escalation clauses should be reviewed carefully. Parking availability and visitor accommodations were flagged as constrained at times. Crucially, there are mixed messages about the facility’s clinical scope: reviewers cited both on-site hospice options and instances where end-of-life or higher-level skilled services were not provided, and a few families described abrupt transitions when care needs escalated. Prospective residents with progressive memory impairment or substantial clinical needs should verify the availability of a dedicated memory-care program and clarify admission/retention terms in writing.

Overall, Shorehaven is likely to suit independent or lightly assisted seniors who prioritize an active social environment, onsite amenities, attractive grounds and attentive staff. Prospective residents and families who require higher-acuity nursing support, dedicated memory care, or maximal consistency in aide responsiveness should conduct targeted inquiries: tour multiple apartment types, review the contract and escalation policies, ask for recent examples of handling residents with increased needs, and confirm the process for rent adjustments and potential transfers. These steps will help match expectations to the facility’s strengths and constraints.

    About Shorehaven

Shorehaven sits on beautiful waterside property in Sterling Heights, Michigan, with a peaceful view of the lake, plenty of green lawns and walking trails, outdoor patios, and spacious courtyards that give folks a chance to watch the birds and relax in the fresh air. The community offers apartment-style living, with choices of one- and two-bedroom units that come with private bathrooms, walk-in closets, balconies or patios, individually controlled heating and air conditioning, and full kitchens so people can cook if they want, but they also serve one to two prepared meals a day in the dining room, which they call Graceful Dining™, and some folks seem to like the restaurant-style meals a lot. Residents find laundry and housekeeping taken care of, and Wi-Fi is available, so keeping in touch with family or reading the news is pretty easy.

Shorehaven covers a lot of care options since it's a continuing-care retirement community, meaning folks can start out independent and get more help as needed, including assisted living, memory care for dementia or Alzheimer's, adult day care, and nursing and rehab services, even respite care for short stays if someone needs a break. AdvisaCare handles personal care like help with bathing, dressing, and medication, while home health services are also available. Specialized technology, like Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization air purification, boosts air quality and safety throughout the building, which some residents find reassuring, especially in recent times.

The grounds offer space for pets, and residents enjoy a fitness center, arts and crafts room, salon and beauty area, movies, cards and games, and a library. There's also a chapel for worship, plenty of seating in communal living rooms, and a safe community setup for those who have dementia, designed to keep people comfortable and reduce wandering. The staff offer transportation to appointments or outings, and there's resident parking for those who drive. The place is pet-friendly, so bringing a well-behaved animal is okay, and there are walking trails on the property for exercise and fresh air.

Shorehaven provides support for those using Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security disability, or veterans benefits, and can connect people to senior services like geriatric care management and information resources. Management by Grace Management, Inc. keeps things running, and people can look at photos, videos, or take a virtual tour online for a better sense of the place. There's always something going on, with social events, fitness programs, and a "Living Gracefully" blog sharing tips for healthy aging. Shorehaven serves Sterling Heights and nearby communities like Shelby Township, Macomb, Washington, and Warren. The environment stays welcoming and calm, with a big focus on safety, health, and letting seniors keep their freedom as long as possible, with extra care or support available when it's needed.
