    Caring Staff, Clean Facility, Recommended

I'm very pleased with this community - the staff are attentive, friendly, and caring, the building is clean and well-maintained, and meals are varied and good. There are plenty of activities, chauffeured outings and convenient amenities, plus solid medical support in a beautiful lakeside/wooded setting. Staff kept us informed and supportive throughout; I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Shores of Lake Phalen presents as a modern, well-appointed senior living community with many strengths commonly cited by families: a scenic lakeside location, bright and spacious private-suite options, and attractive common areas including a Bistro, event room and theater. Many families emphasize a warm, home-like atmosphere and strong interpersonal connections between residents and staff. The property offers on-site clinical services and therapies, and an activity program with frequent social, recreational, and outing opportunities.

Care and staff: Care quality is described in mixed terms. Numerous accounts highlight compassionate, attentive caregivers who perform frequent wellness checks, know residents by name, and provide hands-on support that families appreciate. Conversely, reviewers also describe inconsistent staffing levels, high caregiver turnover, and variability in memory-care staffing competence; those operational patterns are associated with uneven responsiveness and irregular personal-care scheduling. Communication tone and family engagement vary by team and shift: some families praise supportive leadership and nurses, while others cite abrupt or inattentive interactions with particular staff members.

Dining and therapies: Dining is generally viewed as a strength, with comments about varied menus, healthy options, frequent fresh fruit, and home-style meals. At the same time, there are notes of uneven meal quality and occasional delays in meal service—differences that suggest variability in kitchen operations across shifts. Clinical services and rehabilitation are a positive feature: on-site speech, physical, and occupational therapy and an in-house medical program receive favorable mention, though a few families indicate opportunities to tighten medication-dispensing and clinical-process workflows.

Activities and amenities: The community provides a broad activities calendar, exercise spaces, spa, salon, and multiple social venues; reviewers report active programming including happy hours, bingo, movies, and scheduled outings. Built amenities and outdoor areas (gardens, easy access to parks and the lake) are commonly cited as contributors to quality of life. Some feedback indicates that activity availability can be limited at certain times, which appears correlated with staffing patterns.

Facilities, cleanliness and privacy: Many families praise the new, well-maintained building and comfortable suites. However, there are facility-level cleanliness and odor concerns specifically called out in memory-care areas and some common spaces; these observations suggest inconsistent housekeeping or waste-management practices in certain units. A privacy concern about room monitoring (camera in a room) indicates a need for clearer monitoring and privacy policies and family communication about device use.

Management and operations: Reviews point to uneven operational oversight. Some families describe an active, hands-on executive leadership and positive recent changes, while others note gaps in management follow-through, billing errors, delayed deposit returns, and variability in frontline supervision. Transportation and logistics are mixed: chauffeured shopping trips and outings are available, but there are operational gaps for transporting residents to medical appointments. Overall, the pattern suggests a facility with many core strengths in hospitality and clinical offerings that is experiencing operational inconsistencies tied to staffing, supervision, and administrative processes.

Advice for prospective families: During a visit, verify staffing ratios and turnover data for the unit of interest (particularly memory care), ask for a walkthrough of housekeeping and waste-management procedures, review medication-administration and monitoring policies, clarify transportation services and scheduling for medical appointments, and request examples of recent management initiatives addressing any operational weaknesses. These targeted questions will help assess whether the community’s strengths align with a prospective resident’s needs and expectations.

About The Shores of Lake Phalen

The Shores of Lake Phalen sits at 1870 E Shore Dr in Maplewood and provides several options for seniors, like independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and more. The place is fully wheelchair accessible, and the staff know how to help people who need help with bathing, dressing, or moving around, and they offer 24-hour supervision and support with medication. People who need special diets because of allergies or diabetes get meals planned just for them, and the dining room serves food while the kitchen staff take care of food preparation and any special dietary needs. Housekeeping and laundry are taken care of, and the rooms come furnished if needed, which means residents don't have to worry about those chores.

The community plans activities like movie nights and games, and there are programs for mental wellness. Seniors with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia can join in memory care programs that keep them engaged and safe, with a secure area to prevent wandering and care plans that are made for each person. The Shores of Lake Phalen also has help with moving in and can guide families through decisions about long-term care and insurance. Staff are always nearby, day or night, and the emergency alert systems mean someone responds quickly if there's a problem. Floor plans vary, and the place has some comforts, like a pleasant setting and social events, to help new residents feel at home and stay active.

The place is run by Odom Health & Wellness. There's a focus on supporting independence as much as possible, but also on providing help when health needs change, like with assisted living, non-ambulatory care, or dementia care. Activities of Daily Living assistance is offered when needed, and the game room and common spaces let people connect with others or join in group activities. The Shores of Lake Phalen closes on weekends and is open during the week from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the latest reviews give it a fair rating of 3.6 out of 38 reviews, which shows folks have different experiences. The goal here is to keep seniors comfortable, safe, and involved in daily life, with support that adapts to their needs over time.
