    Beautiful well-maintained community with caveats

I love the beautiful riverfront community - immaculate, well-maintained grounds and condo-style rooms with full kitchens, two dining rooms with river views, pool, hot tub and lots of activities. The staff are mostly wonderful - courteous, patient and professional - and transportation/amenities make visits easy. Downsides: units are on the small side, it's pricey with a waiting list, limited guest parking, no private balconies and no on-site medical care. A couple of employees gave me a negative experience that tarnished an otherwise first-class, homey place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, centered on a well-maintained, attractive riverfront property that offers resort-style amenities and an active lifestyle. Reviewers repeatedly highlight the scenic Riverwalk location, river and park views, and proximity to local entertainment such as casinos and a nearby 10-screen theater. The facility is described as first-class and immaculate, with numerous communal spaces—bar, lounge, library, game room, coffee bar, and multiple dining rooms—that support social life and visiting. Many emphasize heated indoor amenities like the swimming pool and hot tub, an indoor exercise room, and recreational options including pool table and basketball.

Dining and apartment features receive frequent praise. The community offers two dining venues with tablecloth service and river views, a breakfast buffet, gluten-free-friendly options, and generally high-quality meals (three meals a day). Some apartment options are condo-style with full kitchens, separate living rooms and bedrooms, and are described as clean and inviting. Reviewers appreciate the condo-like independence along with available assistance as needed, and several note that the apartments feel homey and well-appointed.

Activities and transportation are standout strengths. The reviews describe a robust activities calendar with casino trips, theater outings, bus trips, walks along the garden or river, and on-site exercise and recreational programs. Scheduled transportation is available for outings and errands, which complements the walkable Riverwalk location. These programming elements contribute to an active, engaged resident lifestyle frequently mentioned by reviewers.

Staff and management themes lean very positive but with some caveats. Many reviews emphasize courteous, helpful, patient, and long-tenured staff; visitors report pleasant tours and wonderful visiting experiences, and some reviewers specifically call the staff kind, professional, and an asset to the city. However, a minority of reviews note negative experiences with a small number of employees that have left lasting impressions for those individuals. Management appears to maintain high standards for cleanliness and facility upkeep, though reviewers differ on some aspects of décor—some find portions of the building older or furnished with antique pieces.

Notable limitations and recurring concerns should be considered alongside the positives. Several reviewers point out practical drawbacks: limited or no guest parking, limited private outdoor space (no unit balconies for many apartments), and the absence of on-site medical care. Some characterize the grounds as limited or note there is no expansive outdoor space, even though garden and patio areas are mentioned in other reviews. Unit size is a common concern — some apartments are described as small — and the condo-style layout may not suit residents seeking a traditional assisted-living floorplan. Cost and availability are mixed topics: while a few reviewers find the community cheaper than some alternatives (e.g., Carson options), others describe the monthly cost as high and note pricing uncertainty; there is also mention of a waiting list.

In summary, Promenade On the River appears to excel as an upscale, activity-rich, riverfront senior living community with strong dining options, extensive amenities, and largely caring, experienced staff. It is especially suited to seniors seeking an active, social lifestyle with resort-like conveniences and convenient access to local entertainment. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strengths in amenities, location, and staff quality against practical considerations such as unit size, availability, guest parking, lack of on-site medical services, occasional older décor, and potential cost. The overall pattern across reviews signals a high-quality environment with a few operational and design limitations that may matter depending on individual care needs and lifestyle preferences.

    About Promenade On the River

Promenade On the River sits in Reno's Old Southwest neighborhood with views of the water and offers independent living, assisted living, nursing and rehab, memory care, and adult day care services all under one roof, being Northern Nevada's first Senior Resort Living Community, which makes it feel pretty special for the area because you get maintenance-free apartments, some with patios or balconies, and those apartments have several different floor plans with names like Monet Studio, Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse, and Gauguin, each one unfurnished but including crown molding, wood window trim, tiled kitchen and bathroom floors, full kitchens, washer and dryer, walk-in closets, private bathrooms, and emergency call systems for safety and peace of mind. Residents and their pets can enjoy a river lounge, an art studio, a library, a beauty salon and barber, a spa, a rooftop heated pool and pool deck, a fitness center, and a game room, along with community spaces that are decorated with warm touches and a lobby fireplace where people can gather. Promenade On the River serves three restaurant-style meals daily, and there's weekly housekeeping with linen and towel changes, plus all utilities are wrapped into the monthly lease so you won't have to juggle extra bills for things like cable or Wi-Fi, which they offer, and the building has twenty-four-hour security and concierge staff who help with anything, day or night. Parking is available in a covered and gated garage, and there's onsite transportation seven days a week, at no extra charge, which makes getting to local restaurants, the Performing Arts Center, or social outings and scheduled cultural activities easier for everyone. Residents can play cards and poker, attend exercise classes like Tai Chi and Full Body Workout, join in on bingo nights and concerts held in the atrium, or take up arts and crafts in planned sessions. Promenade On the River says it's the only "boutique" retirement community in the area and is privately owned, aiming to give people all-inclusive resort-style living with care that covers most needs. Legal protections cover gender identity and orientation, though protections for income source aren't included. Information about specific building or interior features, outdoor amenities, and the exact types of floors isn't fully detailed, but the property seems secure, friendly to pets, and tailored toward older adults who want as much independence as possible while having support and activity right there.
