    Compassionate attentive care seamless transition

I placed my sister here and I'm very satisfied. The staff are compassionate, attentive, and cheerful; therapy (PT/OT) is excellent, meals and activities are engaging, and the building is clean, welcoming, and safe with efficient check-in. Residents seem happy, administration is responsive, and the transition was seamless.

    Summary of reviews

Keene Center elicits strongly mixed but consistent themes. Many families and residents praise the frontline caregivers: staff are frequently described as compassionate, respectful, and hands-on, and nursing plus rehabilitation services (PT/OT) are noted as strengths. The facility operates several positive programs that residents and families appreciate — a partner or pairing program that gives residents a dedicated staff contact, an active resident council with involvement in programming, and a varied activities calendar (craft fairs, karaoke, library offerings) that many find engaging. Several operational features also receive positive mention, including a welcoming admissions process with photo nametags, visible infection‑control steps such as visitor screening and air filtration in shared spaces, and some well-maintained, spacious rooms and common areas.

At the same time, a recurring pattern of operational weaknesses appears across reviews. Staffing levels are repeatedly characterized as insufficient, which reviewers link to delays in response, inconsistent housekeeping, and dietary interruptions. Housekeeping and maintenance are uneven: some units and rooms are described as well cared-for while others have cleanliness and maintenance gaps; reviewers specifically cite sanitation and incontinence‑care concerns as well as localized odor issues. Dining quality and continuity are variable, with dietary staffing shortages contributing to missed or unsatisfactory meals for some residents.

Communication and administrative coordination are additional areas of concern. Families describe unclear or inconsistent onboarding and billing procedures, difficulty reaching clinical staff by phone, and mixed experiences with front-desk responsiveness—though some front-desk staff are singled out positively. Safety-related operational issues are also noted: unsecured cords, equipment placed in walkways, and occasional elevator or mechanical failures that affect accessibility and perceived safety. Reviewers also describe uneven staff conduct and tone; while many staff are praised for empathy and responsiveness, others are characterized as curt or slow to respond, producing variable experiences.

For prospective residents and families, the pattern suggests a facility with strong caregiver commitment and a robust activities/therapy offering, but with operational strains that impact consistency of experience. Questions to consider during a tour or intake include current staffing ratios and schedules, housekeeping and maintenance protocols (including how sanitation and odor concerns are managed), dietary staffing and menu continuity, call‑bell response metrics, admissions/onboarding and billing contacts, and specific safety procedures for equipment and environmental hazards. Overall impressions vary unit‑to‑unit and depend heavily on staffing stability and managerial follow-through; many families report positive, even excellent care when staffing and communication are functioning well, while others describe enough operational gaps to prompt closer scrutiny before a long‑term placement.

    About Keene Center

Keene Center sits at 677 Court Street in Keene, New Hampshire, and is a senior care community that's part of the Genesis HealthCare network, which manages more than 200 centers like this one. It's a skilled nursing facility that takes Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances, so lots of people can receive care here without worrying about coverage. Keene Center has won the AHCA Bronze Quality Award and is recognized as a We Honor Veterans community partner, which might give some families peace of mind. You'll find care options like Assisted Living, Memory Care, Nursing Home services, and skilled nursing, along with post-hospital, short-term rehab and long-term care if the need arises, and they don't turn away folks who need respite care either. People here can also get home care, palliative care, hospice, home health care, and help through Medicaid HCBS services. There are attending physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses on site, with specialists who handle things like IV therapy, wound and pain management, dementia care, dental or vision needs, colostomy and bariatric specialties, psychiatric services, and medication management, and even case management. Folks with special nutritional or dietary needs are supported too, and you'll find discharge planning and interpreters if anyone needs a hand communicating. You can pick from studio or suite layouts, and the rooms are roomy, with cable television, wireless internet, and a country kitchen. There's a beauty salon on the premises, plus spa and barber services, and the laundry's taken care of, with mail, newspaper, and pharmaceutical delivery available. The environment is smoke-free, with patios and gardens where residents can relax, and families can use private dining rooms for gatherings. Pets are allowed for visits, and people living with cognitive challenges are helped by an alarm system. Residents can join in cultural, religious, educational, and social activities, from recreation to quiet time in comfortable lounges, and activities are organized regularly--the community also plans outings or gatherings, so no one gets too lonely. If you want, you can go visit the Keene Center, see the rooms, talk to the Administrator or the Director of Rehab, and meet the Director of Marketing & Admissions before picking a spot. The building is close to other supportive communities like Covenant Living of Keene and American House Keene, so there's a bit of backup in the area if families are looking for different types of care. It's important to know the nursing home part of Keene Center has a 1-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, so families often come and see things for themselves or talk directly with staff to decide what's best. Photos, tour scheduling, and more information are available on their website if anyone's considering moving in or just wants to have a look around.
