    Welcoming, caring staff; minor improvements

I visited and feel comfortable placing my dad here. The staff are genuinely friendly, caring and responsive; nurses and therapists are skilled, the facility is immaculate and beautifully furnished, and visitors are welcomed with plenty of activities and good food. Overall I'm very happy and would recommend it-there's just a little room for improvement.

    Summary of reviews

Edgewood Center presents as a well-kept, homelike skilled nursing facility with several clear strengths. Reviewers frequently note a clean and attractively decorated environment, a welcoming foyer with plants and water features, pleasant outdoor areas and gardens, and comfortable rooms—including newer tubs and in-room medical equipment in some units. The facility is commonly described as having a warm, family-style atmosphere with staff who provide personable greetings and one-on-one attention. Management receives positive mention for hands-on leadership and an admissions process that many families found professional and thorough.

Clinical and day-to-day care receive mixed but notable feedback. Many families praise the rehabilitation team, prompt PT/OT initiation, and positive rehab outcomes; several accounts describe measurable functional improvements. At the same time, pattern-level concerns appear around consistency of nursing coverage and clinical oversight. Reviewers describe intermittent staffing shortages, variable nurse responsiveness to call lights or requests, and instances that raise questions about medication monitoring and rapid clinical-incident response. These comments suggest that the overall care culture is caring, but that operational strains can produce variability in nursing performance and timeliness of clinical interventions.

Dining and activities are generally described as strengths in atmosphere and programming. The activities department is characterized as active and creative with frequent events (sing-alongs, crafts, outings, holiday meals and themed festivals) that contribute to community life. Food is praised in many accounts for presentation and special events; however, others describe the daily menu as inconsistent or reminiscent of institutional-style meals. Activity access appears robust for ambulatory and engaged residents, but families noted that residents with advanced cognitive impairment may have fewer usable opportunities in group programming.

Facility amenities and operations show a combination of modern and older elements. Several areas are described as newly updated and well-equipped, while other parts reflect an older building footprint and some cramped shared rooms with shared bathrooms and limited shower access. Infection-control procedures and visitor screening were reported as consistently implemented. Practical limitations cited include in-room amenity gaps (for example, no personal phone service in some rooms) and perceived high cost relative to certain amenities.

Overall, Edgewood Center offers many features attractive to prospective residents: a clean, welcoming environment; an engaged activities program; hands-on management; and strong rehabilitation services. Prospective residents and families should weigh these strengths against operational patterns noted in reviews—especially around nursing staffing consistency, responsiveness to resident requests, and medication oversight. An in-person tour that includes observation of staff–resident interactions, verification of staffing levels on the intended unit, review of room configuration and bathroom access, and discussion of medication-safety and incident-response protocols would help families assess fit for a particular clinical or social need.

    About Edgewood Center

The Edgewood Center sits at 928 South Street in Portsmouth, NH, where families have managed it since 1972, and you'll find it right at the second blinking yellow light on South Street, which folks can get to easily from Interstate 95, Route 33, and the Spaulding Turnpike, and once you're there you'll see it's got scenic New England seacoast views all around, and the place itself feels warm and home-like, built so residents can live safely and comfortably with dignity. Edgewood Center offers long-term care, memory care, and short-term rehabilitation in a way that's careful and organized, and their nursing care includes award-winning short-stay rehab for people coming out of the hospital, helping them adjust before going home again, all in a supportive and relaxing place. The skilled nursing team handles diabetes management, wound care, and complex medical needs, and there's licensed in-house therapy for people who need strength recovery, plus hospice care for those who need that specific support. Staff take pride in a person-centered approach, making customized care plans based on each resident's needs and preferences, and over half the staff have stayed longer than five years, which helps build real relationships.

Edgewood Center puts a strong focus on mental health and behavioral care, with specialized programs and amenities for people needing mental health support, including crisis intervention and psychiatric emergencies; it's set up for both inpatient and outpatient treatment, and they take care to support stability and recovery at any stage, and that's true whether a person needs crisis stabilization or ongoing outpatient services, and even the youth and young adults have their own tailored programs. Residents with memory conditions get help in a family-like setting with a Life Enrichment Director looking out for activity choices, and everyone gets daily options like trivia groups, spiritual services, yoga, gardening clubs, and more, including chef-led home-cooked meals and snacks that meet dietary restrictions, plus there's always a library, a gym for professional therapy, a fitness center, and a pond-side courtyard for quiet time or group fun.

Rooms at Edgewood Center have two beds, two TVs, and a shared bathroom, and maintenance is all taken care of so you can just settle in, and there are comfortable apartments designed for convenience and privacy, but always with safety and independence in mind, which staff like the Director of Nurses and the Director of Rehabilitation help maintain. With three New Hampshire Quality of Life Awards to their name and a five-star rating from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Edgewood also has recognition as Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report, and that's alongside a history of expanding to meet more needs with more licensed beds and more programs, including resources about weight management, drug detoxification, and other health topics. The culture here holds to genuine, supportive relationships between staff and residents, aiming for wellness, independence, and meaningful daily living for everyone, and the setting is built as a true community with social, spiritual, physical and recreational groups that help people stay active and connected, while skilled staff and management from Green Tree Healthcare keep things compassionate, personal, and steady no matter what level or type of care's needed.
