    Attentive rehab care, clean facility

I'm very pleased with my experience - the rehab team and therapy staff helped my mom recover and come home safely, and the attentive, caring staff (Giovanni, Norma, Barbara and the kitchen led by Mrs. Maxine stood out) kept us informed and comfortable. The facility was clean, welcoming, and well run with engaging activities and responsive administration. I would recommend it for rehab and extended care.

    Summary of reviews

The review set presents a mixed picture of Brookhaven Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare. Strengths are concentrated around rehabilitation and therapy services, a number of individual staff members, and some administrative functions; weaknesses cluster around operational consistency — notably staffing, responsiveness, and room-level maintenance. Prospective residents and families will find examples of both reliable clinical recovery support and recurring process shortfalls that affect day-to-day experience.

Care quality and clinical oversight show a dual pattern. Many reviewers praised the facility's rehabilitation team, therapists, and some nursing staff for successful recovery trajectories and safe discharges home. At the same time, other reviewers described gaps in ongoing clinical monitoring — including medication oversight, post-procedure follow-up, and fall-prevention practices. There are also occasional skin-integrity and nutrition-related concerns mentioned; these indicate a need for more consistent clinical surveillance and documentation across shifts.

Staffing and staff conduct are recurring themes. Numerous comments identify individual caregivers, nurses, and administrators as compassionate, communicative, and effective; those staff members contribute materially to positive outcomes. However, the reviews also point to inconsistent staffing levels, slow responses to call requests, and variability in how staff communicate with residents and families. Understaffing is cited as a root cause for delayed assistance, longer wait times during shift changes, and limited availability of nurses or aides at certain hours.

Dining and nutrition receive mixed feedback. Several reviewers compliment the kitchen team and meal presentation, with some noting tasty, home-cooked options and timely same-day laundry support. Conversely, other reviewers report slow meal delivery, small portions, limited menu choice, and meals that did not meet resident preferences. These divergent accounts suggest inconsistent meal-service execution and variability in resident satisfaction with food offerings.

Activities and social engagement are generally described positively. The activities department and individual coordinators receive praise for keeping residents engaged with events, outings, and themed celebrations. Families frequently reference activities as a meaningful contributor to quality of life during a stay.

Facility condition and housekeeping describe another mixed pattern. Common areas are often described as clean and welcoming, and laundry service is frequently commended. However, reviewers also raised room-level maintenance issues, odor concerns on specific units, stained flooring, and the need for certain building upgrades. A small number of reviewers mentioned pest-control concerns, indicating areas where environmental services should be monitored closely.

Management and communication present variability. Several families note improved responsiveness and better customer experience under newer management, praising transparent dialog and helpful admissions staff. Others describe difficulty reaching charge nurses or the Director of Nursing, slow resolution of complaints, and inconsistent follow-through. Taken together, these comments point to uneven performance in family communication and escalation pathways.

Overall, Brookhaven appears to offer strong rehabilitation resources and many capable, caring staff members, but operational inconsistencies — especially staffing, responsiveness, room maintenance, and certain aspects of clinical oversight — introduce risk for a variable experience. For families considering Brookhaven, recommended due diligence includes touring the room to assess maintenance, asking about current staffing ratios and recent management changes, inquiring about medication-monitoring protocols and fall-prevention measures, and observing mealtime operations and staff–resident interactions during different shifts.

    About Brookhaven Center

Brookhaven Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, found at 120 Park End Place in East Orange, New Jersey, serves as a 122-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility that truly centers on rehabilitation and skilled nursing care, offering a broad set of services for people recovering from strokes, cardiac disorders, surgery, or wounds, and they've really built up a reputation for thoughtful care, focusing on getting folks back on their feet-on average, people stay about 20 days after an illness or hospital visit before heading back home, and there's always a board-certified physician and trained nursing staff on hand, which means care goes on around the clock, and people can usually expect decently competent help with things like medication, bathing, special diets, and even transfers, and for those who need it, there are comprehensive therapy options like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, that are paired with post-acute and sub-acute care programs meant to address complicated health needs, whether that's for someone dealing with a stroke or for those who need wound care or have issues with swallowing, breathing, or diabetes. The place stands out for its focus on veterans, too, with staff ready to help with VA benefits and financial advice, and the whole facility offers modern touches like air-conditioning, cable television, free high-speed Wi-Fi, computer areas, and furnished rooms that keep comfort in mind, plus accessible spaces inside and outside for visiting or getting fresh air. Guests are welcome at mealtimes and can even stay overnight, and there are common areas with televisions, party space, a dining room for restaurant-style meals, and a recreation room, along with a small library for book discussions, arts and crafts spots, a garden for a gardening club, and a wellness center that runs fitness and lifelong learning programs, which means there's always something buzzing, from game nights and story time to music from a resident musical group or holiday parties and seasonal events, and folks can even get haircuts at the on-site beauty salon and go to offsite community events with provided transportation. The staff here tries to make admissions run smoothly, with social workers to coordinate moves from a hospital, and they cater to various housing situations, offering apartments, condos, townhomes, and even luxury apartments, and they have policies in place for all sorts of residents, including those who have pets, though exact details might vary. People living at Brookhaven get protection under federal laws for LGBTQ residents, including support regardless of gender identity, orientation, or income source, so they foster respect and dignity for all. Parking for guests, medication management, housekeeping, move-in support, and room service round out the practical side, and with everything running on an all-inclusive pricing plan, families can at least expect less confusion on costs, though specific prices aren't listed upfront. The focus here is on maintaining a home-like atmosphere blended with advanced medical care, and the staff try to keep a sense of family and friendship alive, aiming for everyone to feel as comfortable as possible while getting the help they need.
