    Beautiful Victorian home, caring staff

I live in this beautiful Victorian home with large private rooms, home-cooked meals, abundant activities and shops/restaurants within walking distance. The staff, director and owner are loving, professional and supportive; it's clean, safe, community-oriented and feels like family - I highly recommend it, with only minor reservations.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of The Bixby Home present a mixed picture with clear strengths alongside operational weaknesses. Many accounts describe a small, home-like environment in a Victorian house with large private rooms, a strong sense of community, and frequent social and seasonal activities. Several reviewers praised warm, friendly staff and a proprietor who is engaged and supportive. Families and residents frequently note opportunities for socialization, the availability of in-room and hospice care, and generally well-liked home-cooked meals. These features support a residential atmosphere that some residents report as safe, clean, and conducive to long-term stays.

Care quality and staffing are described unevenly. Positive reports emphasize respectful treatment, compassionate caregiving, and helpful direction from the management team. Conversely, other reviews point to gaps in clinical coordination, limited sharing of health information, and delays or shortfalls in responsiveness. There are repeated mentions that outcomes are better when family members remain actively involved in communication and oversight. Concerns about staff conduct and inconsistent professionalism also appear; some reviews cite unhelpful or discourteous interactions and variable task completion.

Dining and activities are generally cited as strengths. Reviewers mention abundant activities, a library nearby, and local amenities within walking distance. Food is described as home-cooked and often enjoyed by residents, and organized social events contribute to residents’ adjustment and friendships. A few comments note charges for cable or other entertainment services, which families should clarify during inquiries.

Facility and safety observations are mixed. The property’s character and private rooms are positives, but several reviews flag maintenance and sanitation shortcomings, outdoor housekeeping lapses, and potential accessibility issues. Specific remarks raise concerns about ADA accessibility and fire-code compliance; prospective families should verify the facility’s current compliance status and physical-condition remediation plans.

Management and administrative themes include both praise and criticism. Some families report an engaged proprietor and responsive director who facilitate continued care, while others describe inconsistent administrative transparency, problems with record-keeping, and disputes over personal belongings following a resident’s death. There are also mentions of limited resident access to telephone or Internet services, which can affect family communication. One review references allegations of illegal operation and a regulatory inquiry; this type of claim elevates the need to check licensing and inspection history directly with state authorities.

Overall, The Bixby Home appears to offer a home-style, activity-rich option with dedicated caregivers and proximity to local amenities. However, reviews also reveal meaningful operational concerns regarding maintenance, compliance, administrative practices, and communication infrastructure. Prospective residents and families should conduct an in-person visit, request documentation of regulatory compliance and inspection history, clarify policies on communications and fees, and discuss care-coordination processes and safeguarding of personal belongings before making a placement decision.

    About The Bixby Home

The Bixby Home sits at 8342 North Main Street, P.O. Box 419, Interlaken, NY 14847, about 17 miles from Penn Yan, and offers a small, supportive setting with just 24 beds designed for seniors who need different levels of help. Trained caregivers stay on-site all day and night, and there's staff around to help with bathing, dressing, medication, getting up and down, toileting, and even feeding if someone needs it, which can give families some peace of mind. There's a range of care, including assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, home care, adult day care, respite, and hospice, so people with different health needs can all find the services they're looking for, even if requirements change.

Apartments come in different setups, like studios, 1-bedroom units, and shared options, all fully furnished with amenities like cable, satellite TV, high-speed internet, and a kitchenette, so folks have what they need for comfort. The bathrooms meet ADA standards, and there's an emergency response system in every room along with a 24-hour call system and keypad entry for security, which helps everyone feel safe. The facility's pet-friendly, and the spacious living room, dining hall, patios, and gardens give residents cozy spots for visiting, fresh air, or just sitting quietly.

Meals get served restaurant-style all day in a big dining room, and the kitchen staff prepares food that fits lots of dietary needs, including special meals for diabetes or allergies. There's a snack shop too, and residents celebrate birthdays and special occasions with parties. Daily activities fill the schedule-movie nights in a dedicated screening area, art and crafts in a big activity room, fitness sessions, outings with transportation, computer classes, and therapy programs. The Bixby Home encourages residents to run some activities themselves, which gives the place a more neighborly feel and keeps everyone engaged.

There's a small library and reading room, a game room, salon and barber area, and plenty of outdoor walking paths, plus a garden where people can enjoy nature. Residents can also use the shared kitchen, patios, and decks. The staff handles maintenance on both apartments and the grounds, and relocation assistance helps folks move in when the time comes. Monthly doctor visits, routine health checks, diabetes monitoring, medication management, rehabilitation, and help with things like continence care and Parkinson's disease are all available, and there's a nurse on staff for extra support.

The Bixby Home has 6.1 out of 10 for its rating, and while that's not top of the line, it keeps steady services running for those who need daily help, ongoing medical care, and a safe, simple community. There are no grand promises, but folks living here will find steady help, clean living spaces, and regular opportunities to socialize and keep active. The community holds a New York license with number AF0656A, and visitors can come during accommodating hours. All utilities are included, and the atmosphere leans toward being easygoing and practical for seniors looking for a home that meets medical, social, and daily living needs.
