    Compassionate, clean facility with activities

I placed my father-in-law here and have been very pleased - compassionate, attentive staff; clean, bright rooms with windows; spacious, peaceful outdoor areas; and lots of daily activities plus on-site therapy and 24/7 medical coverage. They supported our family through a difficult time, and I highly recommend this well-run facility.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Pines Healthcare & Rehab Center presents as a facility with notable clinical resources and active programming but with important operational inconsistencies that prospective residents and families should weigh. Many reviewers praise the clinical strengthsโ€”particularly rehabilitation/physical therapy services, around-the-clock physician access, and full-time nursing coverageโ€”and describe caregivers as compassionate and attentive. The facility offers a range of social and spiritual activities (bingo, local-artist presentations, church services) and has on-site cafeteria-style dining, outdoor spaces, and both private and double-room configurations, which families find useful for short-term rehabilitation and end-of-life support.

Care and staff: Clinical care receives mixed but specific feedback. Several accounts highlight strong rehabilitative outcomes and attentive nurses and CNAs who provide compassionate, high-quality hands-on care. At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns: staffing levels appear variable and are linked to slow response times to call lights and assistance requests. Families described delays of up to 20 minutes for routine help and uneven monitoring that, in some cases, led to emergency transfers to hospital. Communication with families is inconsistentโ€”some relatives noted clear, supportive updates while others described poor coordination and brusque reception staff. There are also serious interpersonal concerns, including allegations of culturally insensitive behavior toward Black residents; this raises questions about staff training in cultural competence and respectful communication.

Dining and activities: The facility provides full-service meals and a cafeteria model, and many reviewers appreciated the variety and social nature of dining and activities. However, there is a clear pattern of inconsistent food quality and meal delivery: complaints include poorly prepared entrรฉes, meals served at inadequate temperatures, and incorrect orders. Recreational programming is a consistent strength, with frequent mentions of bingo, artist presentations, church services and other daily events that support resident engagement.

Facilities and environment: Descriptions of the physical plant are divergent. Several families praised clean rooms, outdoor serenity, and thoughtful design; others raised maintenance and environmental-safety concerns such as dark/damp common areas, exposed wiring or ceiling issues, active construction impacts, and general condition problems that affect comfort and perceived safety. In-room comfort is uneven: some rooms are spacious with windows, while others are small and lack essential furnishings (for example, comfortable chairs). Sanitation and odor control are generally acceptable to many but inconsistent enough in some areas to be noted as a concern.

Management and notable patterns: The strongest themes are a core of dedicated, caring staff and effective rehabilitative care contrasted with operational weaknesses tied to staffing, maintenance, and communication. These mixed patterns suggest that quality may depend on unit-level staffing and management responsiveness. Prospective families should consider: reviewing current staffing ratios, observing mealtime service, inspecting room conditions during a visit, and discussing the facilityโ€™s policies for cultural-competence training and family communication. When clinical stability and active rehab are priorities, Pines shows clear strengths; when continuous, routine responsiveness and consistent environmental maintenance are essential, families should probe these areas further during tours and intake conversations.

About Pines Healthcare & Rehab Center

Pines Healthcare & Rehab Center sits over in Olean, NY, with the campus stretching out near the Allegheny River Trail and all those tall pine trees giving it a peaceful, home-like setting, and folks can visit both the Olean and Machias campuses to get a feel for the place and meet staff and residents, since they let families schedule tours if they'd like to see things firsthand. The center can care for up to 120 people and holds Medicare and Medicaid certification, offering both skilled nursing home care and rehabilitation services, with long-term and short-term programs meant to help residents recover, get stronger, and, when possible, return home to more independent living.

The staff covers a big range of services, so there's Nursing, Medical Services, Audiology, Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Social Work, and Leisure Time Activities, with special attention to care using medical equipment that fits each resident's own health needs. Pines aims to meet every resident's physical, social, and emotional needs with things like personal care, facility care, and full rehabilitation support, and there's a strong push to keep dignity and respect front and center for everyone. The team includes folks like Acting Director of Nursing Facilities Kelly Reed, Director of Nursing Jennifer L. Childs, RN, Administrator Tammy Reynolds, LNHA, an Admissions Specialist named Gretchen Eddy who manages short-term rehab placement, Joy Lavelle the Medicaid Coordinator for long-term placement, Executive Assistant Margie Gibbons, and a good number of compassionate staff members who focus on making day-to-day life better for every person who lives there.

For people facing long-term medical challenges, short-term rehab, or those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the Rehabilitation Center aims to promote rights and well-being, and there's a big focus on getting residents back to their own homes whenever that's possible, too. Regular events and activities fill the calendar at both campuses, including things like Happy Hour, Candy Cart, Music with Dave and Friends, Morning Coffee Cart, Cash Bingo, Prize Bingo, Rosary or Mass, and a couples support group luncheon, which gives folks and their spouses a chance to connect. Volunteers are welcomed, and Pines gets involved in community efforts, like advocacy and support for issues in education, employment, health, and legal matters. The center's always working to improve services and provides staff training for better medical care starting with each resident's everyday needs and health goals.

There's no flash or fuss to it-Pines Healthcare & Rehab Center simply focuses on making life better for residents by providing safe, skilled care in a setting that feels welcoming, steady, and supported by both dedicated professionals and community involvement.
