    Inconsistent care despite compassionate staff

I had a mixed experience at this Medicaid-accepting facility. Some therapists, CNAs and staff were compassionate, respectful and helpful, but care was inconsistent - missed meds, poor hygiene, residents sometimes went weeks without showers, shared rooms, not enough CNAs, staff smoking, spotty cleaning, few activities, bad/no cell reception and uneven food/coffee - so I can't recommend it overall despite gratitude for the excellent caregivers I met.

    Summary review

The reviews for Complete Care at Asheville present a mixed and polarized picture, with a clear split between strongly positive experiences and strongly negative ones. On the positive side, multiple reviewers praise the staff as compassionate, respectful, and friendly. Several accounts highlight attentive therapy services and helpful CNAs, creating a family-like, energetic environment for some residents. Those reviewers report timely responses from staff and management, accommodating meal options, and attentive housekeeping. A number of families explicitly highly recommend the facility and express gratitude for the high-quality care they observed. Acceptance of Medicaid is also noted as a practical advantage for some families.

Conversely, a number of reviews describe significant and recurring problems that materially affect resident well-being. The most serious themes are inconsistent and sometimes poor quality of care: understaffing or too few CNAs, missed medications, inadequate hygiene (including reports that residents may go weeks without showers), and inconsistent room cleaning. Several reviewers explicitly call out medication errors and poor hygiene as major concerns. These problems appear correlated with staffing shortfalls in several accounts, suggesting that workforce levels and care processes may be unreliable at times.

Facility- and amenity-related issues appear in multiple summaries. Some residents or families report that there are no phones in rooms and there is no cell phone reception, which can limit communication and visitor contact. Shared rooms and inconsistent cleanliness are additional concerns. Food quality is criticized by some reviewers, although others mention accommodating meals — indicating variability in dining experience. A specific amenity, the "coffee club," is reportedly shortened or inconsistently supplied (e.g., not enough coffee or cookies for everyone) in at least one review, which may reflect broader inconsistency in programming or supplies.

Social programming and activities also show mixed reports. Several reviewers praise active social and therapy activities and an energetic atmosphere, while others say there are few activities and "rarely anything going on," and that residents "stay to themselves." This divergence suggests that activity levels may depend on staffing, resident mix, or timing, and prospective families could encounter either a lively or a quiet environment.

Staff behavior and policies draw both praise and criticism. While many reviewers find the staff compassionate and respectful, issues such as staff smoking are called out in negative reviews. Management responsiveness is reported positively by some (timely responses) but the presence of complaints about missed medication and inadequate care indicate lapses in oversight or execution. The acceptance of Medicaid is a concrete positive logistical point noted in the reviews.

Overall, the review set paints a facility with notable strengths — particularly in the compassion and responsiveness of many staff members, quality therapy for some residents, and positive experiences reported by several families — but also with important and potentially serious weaknesses, notably inconsistent care, staffing shortages, hygiene and medication problems, and variability in activities and amenities. The pattern is one of high variability: some residents and families have excellent experiences, while others encounter significant problems that lead them to not recommend the facility.

Recommendations for prospective residents or family members: when evaluating Complete Care at Asheville, ask specific, concrete questions and request documentation or observation where possible. Topics to probe include current staffing levels and CNA-to-resident ratios, medication administration protocols and recent medication error history, showering and ADL schedules, housekeeping frequency, activity calendars and participation levels, dining menus and options, phone/cell access and visitor communication policies, smoking policies and where staff smoke, and how shared rooms are managed. If possible, speak with current family members, observe communal spaces and an activity period, and ask management how they handle complaints and quality issues. These steps will help determine whether you are likely to experience one of the strongly positive situations reported or encounter the concerning problems some reviewers described.

    About Complete Care at Asheville

Complete Care at Asheville is a skilled nursing facility that sits at 77 certified beds and has been serving the community since October 1, 1967, with recent changes in ownership within the last year, and folks might want to know it's operated by a for-profit corporation, not some big retirement community, but they do accept both Medicare and Medicaid and they have license number #NH0321 and a federal provider number of 345010, and the administrator's name is Monica Knighten, which may matter if someone's checking into things like staffing or management. The place is structured to provide long-term care, including specialized memory care for those with cognitive troubles, and they offer rehabilitation services for people needing to recover or keep up their strength. The staff gives personalized support with activities of daily living, and they always try to use a person-centered approach so folks get care that fits them, with a real focus on working together with families.

Nursing care here falls a little short of expected totals, with reported total nurse staffing hours per resident per day at 3.09548 when the expected is 3.17934, and the adjusted numbers are pretty close. RN staffing hours are actually above what you'd expect, reported at 0.50798 and adjusted at 0.49551, both above the expected 0.38999, so seniors who need skilled care might feel better knowing they see registered nurses a bit more often, but CNA and overall nurse hours did have a slight drop below expected. Of the ratings, the RN staffing rates a 3, general staffing is rated a 2, quality measures round out at 3, while health inspection is low at 1, so the place has room to improve as far as inspections go. All areas required have automatic sprinklers installed, giving good safety when it comes to fire, and they aren't flagged as a special focus facility.

Residents experience a community that's built around comfort and mutual respect, and amenities lean toward independence-with safe features, inviting spaces, and programs meant to relax and connect, not just keep people busy. They're big on family involvement, aiming to include folks from home whenever they can. Specialized rehab services are there if someone has to get back on their feet, or when ongoing support is needed. The staff centers their care on each individual, and they try to deliver it all with what they call "white-glove love and respect," which is just another way of saying they want to treat people with dignity and warmth. Complete Care at Asheville isn't perfect and it's been through changes, but it does have a long tradition of supporting seniors with practical help in daily life, health care, and a little bit of the comfort of community.
