    Compassionate staff, alarming management failures

I had a loved one here and my experience was mixed. Many staff (and the director) were compassionate, rooms and courtyard were nice, meals and activities were good, and it's affordable and close. But new management brought high turnover, poor communication (often unreachable), medication errors, denied access to belongings and even sudden moves without notice; parts of the building felt run-down and depressing with pest reports. I'd be cautious - it can be wonderful with the right staff, but current management problems are serious.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about Cedar Mountain House is mixed but strongly polarized: a substantial number of reviews describe a warm, caring, and community-oriented facility with good meals, clean spaces, and accessible management, while a smaller but significant set of reviews allege serious problems after management changes, including medication errors, restricted family access to belongings, infestations, and abrupt resident moves. Many reviewers praise the facility for individualized care and a family-like atmosphere, but other reviewers report distressing experiences that they say warrant investigation.

Care quality and staff: The most frequently mentioned strength is the caregiving staff: numerous reviewers call staff “amazing,” “warm,” “loving,” and “dedicated,” and describe directors and nurses as compassionate and communicative. Multiple accounts highlight quick responsiveness to falls, excellent support during COVID, and staff who become close to residents and families. Several reviews note the facility supports independence while providing help with medications, meals, and personal care. However, there is a clear pattern of inconsistency: other reviews describe high staff turnover, some indifferent or non-communicative employees, medication errors, and instances where families were denied access or notified inadequately. These conflicting accounts suggest that care quality may depend heavily on current staffing and management stability.

Facilities, cleanliness, and environment: Many reviewers report the building is clean, smells pleasant, and is well maintained, with friendly cleaning and laundry staff and no laundry issues. Residents and families appreciate the apartment-style layout, peaceful and quiet environment, and a courtyard. Conversely, there are multiple reports of a run-down or depressing atmosphere from other reviewers, including a mention of roach and ant infestations and outdated furniture or bedding in some rooms. A few reviews also reference a lockdown unit and a population that includes residents with advanced dementia, which some families found concerning in terms of atmosphere or appropriateness for their loved ones.

Dining and activities: Dining receives consistent praise. Reviews reference well-balanced, nutritious meals, menu variety, and a chef preparing meals; specific dishes (for example, grilled chicken and mixed vegetables) were called out favorably. Activities are described positively as well, with regular programming such as Wii bowling and bingo and staff who accommodate special requests. These elements contribute to multiple reviewers recommending the community for those who value social engagement and good food.

Management, communication, and family access: Communication experiences are mixed. Several reviews highlight open communication with the director and head nurse and describe management as accessible and helpful (even assisting with Medicaid information). Yet an important subset of reviews alleges that after a change in management the situation deteriorated: families report poor communication, inability to reach or get answers from staff, emergency removals or transfers of residents without proper notification, being denied access to a resident’s personal belongings, and at least one alarming claim where family members were told their relatives had died. These are serious allegations that appear tied in reviews to recent management turnover and staff changes and have prompted calls for an investigation by some families.

Patterns and notable concerns: The reviews suggest a pattern where positive experiences cluster around periods or units with stable, engaged staff and responsive management, while negative experiences correlate with reports of new management, staffing instability, and lapses in operational control (medication handling, possessions policy, pest control). The contrast is stark: many reviewers strongly recommend the facility and praise its community feel and care, while others urge caution and report incidents they consider severe.

Bottom line: Cedar Mountain House receives frequent praise for its compassionate caregivers, good meals, cleanliness (in many accounts), activities, affordability, and convenient, apartment-style setting. At the same time, multiple reviews raise significant concerns about management changes, staff turnover, medication errors, restricted family access to residents’ belongings, infestations, and inconsistent communication. These conflicting themes indicate that prospective residents and families should verify the facility’s current management, staffing stability, medication and belongings policies, and pest-control history, and seek direct answers from leadership before making placement decisions. The facility appears capable of excellent, family-like care, but several reported incidents are serious and merit clarification and investigation.
