    Great care but staffing issues

I love it here. My room feels like home, sanitation is excellent (cleaned frequently), and there are lots of activities, Sunday church, classes and great physical therapy - my mom is back to her old self. Most staff are amazing, friendly, organized and attentive, giving extra care and a smooth admission process and real peace of mind. That said, nights are understaffed (hard to get a nurse), some CNAs/nurses are unresponsive or have poor attitudes, I've experienced medication/wound-care issues (wound vac left off, missing meds/items) and occasional cleanliness lapses; bathroom access is awkward with my knee mobility device. Overall the positives outweigh the negatives for me, but it's not perfect - no covered outdoor smoking area.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed, with a strong split between highly positive personal experiences and serious negative reports that raise safety and quality-of-care concerns. Many reviewers praise the facility for creating a home-like environment with comfortable rooms, an active schedule of activities (including church services and classes), and robust therapy and admission processes. Several families credit the staff—particularly CNAs, nurses, and therapy teams—for delivering attentive, organized, and caring service that led to measurable improvements in residents (examples include a mother "back to her old self" and success stories for a father). Frequent cleaning and a generally clean facility are noted by multiple reviewers; some specifically mention thorough cleaning routines and extra attention given to individual family members, which contributes to peace of mind for those families.

However, those positives are tempered by a set of recurring and significant concerns. Staffing shortages—especially at night—are a consistent complaint, with family members reporting difficulty reaching nursing staff or obtaining needed assistance during overnight hours. Clinical care issues are among the most serious negatives: reviewers report inadequate wound care (including a wound vac not being used), medication errors or missing medications, and other lapses that some believe make the facility unsuitable for vulnerable loved ones. There are also reports of unresponsive or uncaring staff in certain instances, which contrasts sharply with accounts of compassionate, above-and-beyond employees. These inconsistencies point to variability in staff performance and potentially uneven training or supervision.

Cleanliness and safety concerns appear contradictory across reviews. While many reviewers emphasize frequent and thorough cleaning, others report troubling incidents such as a soiled diaper left unattended for an extended period and even allegations of staff theft. This variability suggests possible problems with consistency in housekeeping and resident care practices. Accessibility issues surfaced as well, including bathroom layouts that hinder residents who use knee or mobility devices. Amenities are generally seen as positive (activities, therapy, admissions) but the facility lacks a covered outdoor smoking area, which some consider an amenity gap.

Patterns in the reviews indicate strengths in therapy services, admissions, and personalized relationships with caring staff members. These strengths often produce favorable outcomes and family satisfaction. Conversely, the most critical patterns relate to clinical safety and staffing reliability—areas that directly affect resident health and family trust. Management appears to be delivering strong service in certain departments or shifts while failing to maintain consistent standards across all staff and times of day. To address the major concerns raised, priorities should include improved overnight staffing and nurse availability, stricter medication and wound-care protocols, consistent housekeeping standards, enhanced supervision to reduce variability in staff behavior, and measures to assure families regarding security and theft prevention.

In summary, Carrolton of Dunn receives high marks in multiple domains from families who experienced attentive care, effective therapy, and an active, home-like environment. At the same time, a nontrivial number of reviews describe significant lapses—particularly in clinical care, medication management, nighttime staffing, and consistent cleanliness—that warrant attention. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's demonstrated strengths in therapy and compassionate staff against reported risks tied to inconsistent care and staffing shortages, and they should ask targeted questions about after-hours nursing coverage, wound care protocols, medication administration safeguards, and housekeeping consistency during their decision process.
