    Mostly excellent community with caveats

I moved my mom in and, overall, I'm very pleased: the staff are kind, attentive and professional, the building is immaculate and beautifully appointed with spacious apartment-style rooms, and the food and amenities (bistro, library, activities, housekeeping) are excellent. Move-in was smooth and the community feels welcoming and well run. My biggest issues are that memory care seems understaffed-especially evenings/nights and weekends-activities for that unit are limited, communication can be hit-or-miss, and the cost is high. I'd recommend it if you can afford it and your loved one doesn't need intensive overnight memory-care.

    About Brookdale Elizabeth City

Brookdale Elizabeth City sits in a quiet spot and has offered care to seniors for over 20 years, operating as part of the Brookdale Senior Living network and holding an average rating of 9 out of 10, which is the highest in town, and you'll find a mix of services there like assisted living, independent living, memory care, skilled nursing, and even at-home care if that's what's needed. The facility has 76 beds and 86 units, with several room choices including studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites, all of them offering options like private bathrooms, kitchens or kitchenettes, and furnished or unfurnished setups, and if you have a small pet, they'll even let them move in, plus they offer pet therapy and provide cozy touches like twin beds and pet beds in the apartments. The staff stays on-site all day and night, seven days a week, and they're trained to help with daily needs such as bathing, getting dressed, grooming, and making sure folks stay on track with their medicine, and they're especially careful with memory care, providing special programs and a safe, structured environment for anyone with Alzheimer's or other dementia issues, including the Clare Bridge Place for tailored dementia support and the Clare Bridge Daily Path to add structure to each person's day. There's an emergency call system in every unit and controlled access in all buildings to help make things safer, and transportation gets provided for errands, doctor visits, or outings, with lots of on- and off-site activities arranged so no one feels bored or left out. Residents can head out to the enclosed courtyards, sit on outdoor patios under pergolas, or walk the paths that wind through the woods, and when the weather isn't fine, there are screened porches, well-lit dining rooms with big tables, fireplaces, and plenty of seating to relax in. Meals get prepared by a professional chef, and the dining program, especially for memory care, is set up so everyone can enjoy healthy, home-cooked food, including international and vegetarian dishes, vegan options, and diets like low salt, with the option for room service and guest meals if family stops by. Housekeeping, laundry, and salon services like hair washing and styling are available, and if someone wants to keep busy, the arts and crafts studio is ready for painting, making things, or joining group projects. The staff help folks keep their independence but step in with more help if someone's needs change, so residents can stay in place and not have to move somewhere else, and there are respite and hospice services for short or end-of-life care, plus adult day care and rehab or home health if needed. Brookdale Elizabeth City keeps the focus on wellness, safety, and independence, bringing a sense of community where every resident gets a care plan built for them, and the days feel a bit brighter with activities, special programs, and attention to both body and mind.

    About Brookdale

Brookdale Elizabeth City is managed by Brookdale.

Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) is the largest senior living operator in the United States, managing over 640 communities with capacity for approximately 59,000 residents across 41 states and employing around 36,000 associates. Founded in 1978 and publicly traded since 2005, Brookdale solidified its market leadership through major acquisitions including American Retirement Corporation (2006) and Emeritus Senior Living (2014), making it the only national full-spectrum senior living company. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Brookdale has topped the American Seniors Housing Association's ASHA 50 list and Argentum's largest providers list for multiple consecutive years.

The company's comprehensive care continuum includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Brookdale's signature Clare Bridge program, developed over 30 years ago by dementia-care experts, provides specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care through two distinct levels: Clare Bridge communities for comprehensive memory support and the Clare Bridge Solace program for advanced-stage dementia residents. The program is recognized by the Alzheimer's Association® for incorporating evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations and features secure environments, enclosed courtyards, Daily Path programming with six structured activities daily, and the InTouch technology platform offering personalized brain-stimulating games and therapeutic content.

Brookdale's holistic Optimum Life® wellness approach balances six dimensions—Purposeful, Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Intellectual—implemented through signature programs including B-Fit (eight exercise class options), Brain Fit (mental fitness workouts), My Life Story (resident storytelling), EngagementPlus (interest-based connections), Growing Together (collaborative learning), and The Ageless Spirit (kindness and gratitude practices). The Embrace Family Partnership provides caregiver education and support for families of memory care residents.

The company's Brookdale HealthPlus® care coordination model, winner of the 2024 Argentum Best of the Best Award placing it among the top 1% of operators, is a technology-enabled healthcare service featuring dedicated RN Care Managers who proactively manage residents' health, coordinate care transitions, and help prevent avoidable hospitalizations. Communities using HealthPlus report 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% more completed annual wellness visits. The Personal Solutions program delivers hygiene products, medications, and daily necessities directly to residents' doors with discreet packaging and monthly billing convenience.

Following a strategic divestiture of its home health and hospice operations to HCA Healthcare (completed December 2023), Brookdale now focuses exclusively on senior living operations while maintaining its position as the industry's largest operator, committed to its mission of enriching lives with compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity.
