    Spotless building, caring staff, homey

I live here and couldn't be happier - the building is spotless, nicely renovated, and feels like home. The staff are caring and professional, go above and beyond, and there's 24/7 nursing/physician coverage, great dining, shuttle service, and a full activity calendar. Apartments are spacious and pet-friendly (studio to 2-beds), with lovely grounds and lots of resident engagement. Note it's pricey and I've seen occasional staffing shortages, but overall I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with many reviewers describing Kingston Residence of Hickory as one of the best assisted and independent living options in the area. The facility receives repeated praise for its clinical oversight and safety features: reviewers frequently mention licensed nurses on site 24/7, an on-site physician and nurse practitioner, an on-site nurse station on each floor, and reliable medication management. These elements give many families confidence that complex medical and caregiving needs can be met. Several accounts emphasize that staff display genuine compassion and go the extra mile, organizing celebrations, proactively checking on residents, and treating residents in a family-like, respectful way. Long-term residents and families report strong satisfaction with how staff sustain resident dignity and personal relationships, often describing staff as attentive, smiling, and engaged.

Facility and accommodations are another major strength in the reviews. Many commenters highlight recent renovations, architecturally pleasing and spacious apartment-style rooms, and the availability of multiple apartment configurations including one- and two-bedroom units with kitchenettes. Pet-friendliness and the ability to bring personal furniture are frequently mentioned as pluses. Common areas are described as roomy and inviting, with a large dining room, covered porches, courtyard, garden and pond that support socializing and outdoor enjoyment. Housekeeping and daily laundry services are appreciated, as are small practical conveniences like included refrigerators, air mattresses provided when needed, and on-site maintenance and administrative support.

Dining and activities receive considerable positive attention, though with some mixed notes. Many reviewers praise the dining program — describing a genuine chef, delicious meals, a varied menu, and flexibility such as meals brought to rooms when needed. The dining hall and food presentation are commonly seen as strengths. At the same time a subset of reviews object to food quality or character (describing meals as fattier or, in rare reports, awful), so experiences may vary. Activities are consistently described as plentiful and engaging, with regular offerings such as bingo, exercise classes, Bible study, arts and crafts, shopping trips, rides within a local radius via the facility van, and special events and holiday celebrations. Family members often note that programming contributes to a joyful and social atmosphere.

Management, staff culture, and community life are recurring highlights. Many reviewers applaud management and specific staff members by name for professionalism, caring leadership, and responsiveness. Positive patterns include strong teamwork, staff who fill gaps when needed, and a visible emphasis on safety and resident wellbeing. The community is often described as warm and home-like, with smiling staff, uncluttered halls, and an environment that promotes friendships and memorable experiences. Several reviewers specifically recommend the facility highly, noting it compares favorably to other local options.

Notwithstanding the many positives, there are important and recurring concerns to weigh. Staffing levels and stability surface repeatedly: while some reviews say the facility is well-staffed, others describe periods of severe understaffing, CNA turnover, and low wages that led to lapses in care. These staffing problems are presented as episodic but significant, and reviewers note that quality of care can vary depending on current staffing. Financial transparency and cost are another practical issue. Several reviewers describe the facility as expensive or out of budget, and at least one reported a surprise or hidden charge (noted as $1500) on billing. Prospective residents should therefore clarify all fees and contract terms upfront. There are also isolated but serious complaints — a small number of reviewers reported poor care incidents, employees hiding residents during tours, or particular floors having odor issues — suggesting that while the majority view is favorable, problems have occurred and may impact individual experiences.

In summary, Kingston Residence of Hickory is depicted in most reviews as a high-quality, well-appointed assisted and independent living community with strong clinical resources, compassionate staff, ample activities, and attractive grounds and apartments. The common themes are excellent medical oversight, engaged caregiving staff, recent renovations and spacious apartments, and a lively social and dining program. However, potential residents and families should inquire directly about current staffing levels and turnover, review the menu and dining options in person, examine unit availability (studio options appear limited), and obtain clear written information about all fees and billing practices to avoid surprises. Given the overwhelmingly positive reports balanced against a subset of operational and cost concerns, this community appears to be a strong choice for those who prioritize medical oversight, active programming, and a warm staff culture — provided they confirm up-to-date staffing and pricing details before deciding.
