    Clean, caring facility; great communication

I had a very positive experience at Independence House. The facility was clean, quiet and family-oriented; the nurses, cleaning staff and administration were friendly, proactive and went above and beyond to make my mom comfortable - the rehab gym and pool really aided her recovery and helped her get home faster. Communication was excellent, activities were well explained, pet visits were welcome, and I'm grateful for the caring, helpful team.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive, with multiple reviewers emphasizing the facility's caring, family-oriented atmosphere and consistently familiar staff and residents. Reviewers repeatedly note clear, timely communication about residents' conditions and responsiveness when issues arise. Several specific accounts highlight staff who are proactive problem-solvers and an administration willing to go above and beyond to place residents in rooms that make them comfortable. The facility is described as clean and quiet, and rooms are generally considered fine and acceptable. A number of reviewers specifically praised the nursing and cleaning staff and said the staff aided recovery and helped residents return home faster, which suggests effective clinical and rehabilitative support.

Care quality and staffing: The predominant theme is strong, compassionate care. Multiple comments call out โ€œamazing staff,โ€ friendly and helpful nurses, and good follow-up on resident needs. This is reinforced by examples where administration intervened positively to adjust room assignments and where staff behavior facilitated recovery. However, there are recurring notes about perceived limited staffing levels and the facility not feeling particularly "homey." While staff are praised for being nice and effective, the observation that there are "few staff" appeared more than once and may reflect periods of understaffing or the impression of low staffing density, which can affect resident experience even when care quality is high.

Facilities and rehabilitation: The facility's rehabilitation capabilities are a clear strength. Multiple reviews mention a nice gym, rehab center, and pool, and reviewers credited the environment and staff with helping residents recover and return home faster. Cleanliness is consistently reported as good, which supports a positive impression of the physical environment.

Dining: Food receives mixed notes. One reviewer initially disliked the food but later had no complaints, and other reviewers specifically stated they loved the food. This suggests variability in individual tastes or possibly improvements over time. Overall, dining appears acceptable to many residents and visitors, but there may be occasional or initial dissatisfaction that could be easily addressed through menu adjustments or clearer communication about meal options.

Activities and social programming: Several reviews indicate activities were explained to them but not frequently observed in practice. The pattern is โ€œactivities not seenโ€ alongside comments that staff are nice; this suggests that while programs may exist on paper and staff can describe them, the visibility or regularity of activities might be inconsistent. For prospective residents and families who place high value on active social programming, this is a notable area to clarify or improve.

Professionalism concerns: A notable and specific negative pattern reported in more than one summary is unprofessional behavior at the nursesโ€™ station, with staff observed playing on cell phones and even video games. This is a concrete concern that may erode trust even when other aspects of care are strong. It stands out because it directly contrasts with many other comments praising the staffโ€™s helpfulness and responsiveness. Addressing visible phone use and enforcing professional standards in clinical areas would likely improve family confidence.

Management and response: Management receives positive mentions for responsiveness โ€” particularly an account of administration going โ€œabove and beyondโ€ to make a resident happy with a room โ€” and for generally good communication. Combined with reports of proactive staff, this suggests leadership that is responsive to individual resident needs. That said, the recurring impressions of limited staff and inconsistent activity visibility indicate management opportunities: ensure staffing levels or scheduling better match resident needs and increase the visible presence of programming staff.

Overall assessment: Independence House appears to offer a strong clinical and rehabilitative environment with caring, familiar staff and good communication. Cleanliness, helpful nursing and support staff, and effective rehab services are consistent strengths. Primary concerns to note are occasional perceptions of insufficient staff or a less "homey" feel, inconsistent visibility of activities, and isolated but serious reports of unprofessional phone use at the nursesโ€™ station. Prospective residents and families would likely be satisfied with the quality of care and rehabilitation services, but may want to ask specific questions about activity schedules, staffing ratios, and policies on staff phone use during visits or tours to ensure the aspects most important to them are addressed.

    About Independence House

Independence House in Fostoria, Ohio, has been around since 2006 and was set up as a corporation in 2000, and they run a range of services for seniors so folks who want to live on their own can pick from independent living, assisted living, memory care, and even skilled nursing care if they need extra medical help, and they've got a dedicated location over on Independence Ave with room layouts that include studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options. They don't just focus on one kind of care either, since there's home care with trained aides for folks still living at home, plus therapies in memory care to support people with Alzheimer's or dementia and programs to keep people from getting confused or wandering off, and there's also rehab, outpatient services, and physical therapy for people recovering or seeking more support. The nursing home at Independence House earned a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which is worth mentioning, and their community, from what folks say, has an average rating of 7.8 out of 10. The staff includes about 74 employees, and the interim director is Mrs. Judy Bishop-Pierce, who manages the facility with an emphasis on kindness and helpfulness, and that friendliness seems to filter down through the rest of the team. Residents get access to plenty of social and recreational activities, so they can stay busy or just enjoy things at their own pace, and organized programs aim to help seniors stay active not only socially but in body and mind, and there are amenities designed for wellness such as nutritious meals planned by chefs and meal planners, transportation to appointments or outings, access to a 24-hour emergency response system, and help with things like bathing or medication when needed. Independence House pays attention to women's health and has some outpatient care, orthopedics, cancer care, heart care, hospice and palliative care, and even has a Wellness Park, offering not only living spaces but broader wellness support as well. They're BBB accredited and hold an A+ rating, which tells you something about their business side, and there's a privacy notice and terms of use online if anyone wants to poke around their website for details, and they also offer information for providers and brokers about senior services. They do their best to give seniors a supportive setting for as long as they want to stay active, and the overall feel of the place is pretty welcoming for both residents and families.
