    Small, compassionate, clean family-oriented community

I've been very pleased with this small, well-run senior living community. The staff-especially LPN Kelli-are compassionate, professional, and go above and beyond, keeping families informed and providing personalized, attentive care. Clean, homey apartments, inviting common areas and a close-knit, family atmosphere make it easy to recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Carriage House presents as a small, well-kept assisted living option with an emphasis on a home-like atmosphere and personalized care. Many families described the facility as clean and inviting, with attractive landscaping and comfortable common areas that create a small, close-knit community. Unit layouts include one- and two-room options and basic in-room kitchenettes, which supports resident independence and convenience.

Care quality and staff interactions are commonly cited strengths. Multiple accounts highlight compassionate, attentive caregivers and a licensed practical nurse who is perceived to go above and beyond routine duties. Families appreciated timely communication about residents’ status and described staff as sensitive and reliable — a factor that is especially important to out-of-town relatives. Staff continuity and individualized attention appear to be key contributors to resident satisfaction for many households.

Dining and nutrition show a mixed pattern. While some reviewers found the food acceptable, consistent concerns center on meal quality and limited dietary variety, including a lack of fresh produce and reliance on lower-quality packaged items. These issues suggest a mismatch between culinary expectations and delivery for certain residents, and they raise questions about how the kitchen accommodates special diets or nutritional needs.

Activity programming exists and includes card games, movie nights, exercises, puzzles, and periodic restaurant outings, which suit socially engaged residents. At the same time, several families recommended a broader and more frequent range of activities — for example, group Bible study, crafts, music, and more structured small-group engagement — to better serve residents who are less independently social or who need more stimulation.

Operational limitations were also noted. Transportation for medical appointments is restricted and can be costly when external skilled-transportation services are required, creating an access barrier for some residents. Reviewers described inconsistent staffing levels at times and variability in staff competence or turnover; this pattern suggests that the facility’s quality experience can depend on specific caregivers and staffing stability. Finally, while the facility is generally well maintained, reviewers pointed to aging infrastructure in places and constrained capacity for residents with higher-acuity clinical needs.

In summary, Carriage House may be a good fit for prospective residents or families seeking a small, home-like assisted living environment with attentive, communicative staff and personalized care. Prospective families should weigh the strengths in staff engagement and community feel against operational considerations such as meal quality, transportation options, activity variety, and staffing consistency. Those with specific dietary needs, frequent medical-appointment requirements, or a need for more robust activity programming should ask targeted questions during a tour and confirm current staffing and transportation arrangements before making a placement decision.

    About Carriage House

Carriage House sits in Steubenville, Ohio, as a large senior living community with 69 beds, where seniors can find a mix of care types from independent living to assisted living and secure memory care, all under one roof, and folks there get six different levels of care depending on what they need as they go along. Residents have choices when it comes to living spaces with two apartment styles and several studio layouts, along with private, furnished rooms, and there's a private dining room for special gatherings too, plus guest meals so friends or family can join for supper sometimes. The place allows cats and dogs, has patios for fresh air, and provides outings, day trips, and activities like music, theater, crafts, reading, and dance-which seem to fill up the community calendar along with clubs and events that help people make new friends. The Carriage House Assisted Living unit focuses on care that helps with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and meals, all delivered in a way that tries to keep residents as independent as possible, while the memory care unit's all about keeping folks safe and settled if they have conditions like dementia, with secure spaces and therapies to help avoid confusion and wandering. Every resident gets a schedule just for them, put together with help from the staff, and the nurses are there around the clock to keep an eye on everyone-with emergency call systems in place for safety and peace of mind. Guests find a warm and welcoming staff, described as friendly and helpful, who try to make the place feel like home while taking care of chores like housekeeping, laundry, and meals cooked up by a chef who focuses on both nutrition and taste. Carriage House offers scheduled transportation, parking, beauty salon services, Wi-Fi, and handicap accessibility, and it's got on-site medical support as well as a full set of ambulatory and diabetic care options for people who need them. Spiritual life gets attention, too, with devotional services taking place on-site, while those who need a short break can use the respite care program. The place has earned awards like the Best of Senior Living All Star Award for high review scores, and folks mention its friendly atmosphere and meaningful activities. Funding can come from Medicaid, Veterans Benefits, private funds, Medicare, or private health insurance, so there are some options for paying for care. Carriage House tries to help people stay engaged and keep their independence, but always with the right support, and with access to the local Steubenville activities not too far away, it keeps things interesting for residents who want to get out and about from time to time.
