    Neglectful unsafe care; rude staff

I would not recommend this facility. My loved one was left unconscious on the floor for 24 hours with no medical attention; staff blamed it on drinking and otherwise provided neglectful, unsafe care. The place was messy and short-staffed, management refused to provide information and a nurse was rude and hung up when I called; a few aides were friendly but it didn't make up for everything.

    Summary review

The reviews present a sharply mixed but primarily negative overall impression of Harris Health Care Center LLC. The most serious and recurring theme concerns care quality and resident safety: reviewers allege a resident received no medical attention and was left unconscious on the floor for 24 hours. That single allegation, along with broader accusations of neglectful care and unsafe treatment of a disabled resident, strongly suggests instances where urgent medical needs were not recognized or appropriately handled. Several comments also indicate staff blamed the resident’s condition on drinking rather than providing or seeking timely medical intervention.

Staff behavior is another major theme with polarized reports. Multiple reviews describe nursing staff as rude and unprofessional, including at least one report that a nurse hung up on a caller and staff who refused to provide information. Those accounts point to problems with communication, transparency, and respect for families or callers seeking information. At the same time, some reviewers note there are helpful and friendly caregivers, which indicates that while some employees are competent and compassionate, others behave in ways that significantly undermine trust and satisfaction.

Facility conditions and operational issues are also raised. Reviewers mention messy and dirty surroundings and constant door traffic, which can impact residents comfort, privacy, and perceived safety. Complaints about insufficient caregivers and poor management further suggest systemic issues with staffing levels, oversight, and administrative responsiveness. Insufficient staffing can help explain delays in medical attention and inconsistent resident care, while poor management can account for negative communication interactions and lack of accountability.

Taken together, these reviews indicate several interrelated problem areas: potential lapses in clinical vigilance and emergency response, inconsistent staff conduct and communication, cleanliness and environmental upkeep concerns, and management or staffing shortages that exacerbate the other problems. The presence of positive notes about helpful, friendly staff demonstrates that not all interactions are problematic, but the severity of the safety-related allegations (particularly the reported 24-hour unconscious episode and claims of unsafe treatment of a disabled resident) are significant red flags.

For readers evaluating the facility, the reviews suggest caution. The specific, serious safety and neglect allegations merit investigation by family members and possibly by regulatory or licensing bodies. Prospective residents and families should directly ask leadership about staffing ratios, incident reporting and response protocols, training for emergency situations and disability care, cleanliness and infection control practices, and how the facility handles complaints and family communication. Follow-up questions about recent inspections, complaint history, and staff turnover could help determine whether these reviews reflect isolated incidents or broader, persistent issues.

In summary, while there are reports of helpful and friendly caregivers, the dominant themes are serious concerns about resident safety and medical attention, poor staff professionalism in some cases, facility cleanliness problems, and management/staffing shortfalls. The reviews collectively point to a need for improved clinical oversight, stronger communication and customer service, better housekeeping, and clearer, more responsive management practices to rebuild trust and ensure resident safety.

About Harris Health Care Center LLC

Harris Health Care Center LLC sits at 833 Broadway in East Providence, Rhode Island, right on a public bus route and close to I-195, which makes it easy for families to visit and for residents to take part in events around town or take the handicapped accessible van out to local restaurants, parks, or state attractions, and the place itself looks out over a neatly kept courtyard and has a big old-fashioned porch where residents can sit under colorful hanging plants, sharing stories or just taking in a little fresh air. This place is a private, family owned and operated skilled nursing facility, run by Mr. Charles Harris for over 30 years, and the Harris family also runs Harris Health Center and Harris Health Care North, so they've got a real commitment to caring that's shaped by experience and regular, hands-on staff reviews, some folks even call it their "Recipe for Happiness."

The building's got 31 certified beds and welcomes about 27 residents each day, so the low patient-to-caregiver ratio means residents usually get close attention, whether they need help with daily activities, skilled nursing, memory care, rehab after a hospital stay, or a place to stay for a short time if a caregiver needs respite. Rooms can be private or semi-private, and recent renovations mean the spaces feel warm, well-lit, and comfortable, with inviting places to gather inside or outside. The staff here, known for their understanding and patience, give help in a respectful way, offering therapies like physical, speech, and inhalation therapy along with nursing and memory care, and they try to keep folks active with group activities, religious services, trips out to the casino, movies, cruises, and the like. This place aims to help people live with as much independence as possible, and community involvement gets encouraged, whether that means joining in on social outings or joining friends for an exercise class.

Harris Health Care Center LLC takes Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, serves the local 55+ community, and offers both long-term and short-term care, as well as specialized programs for people with memory issues, and there's a focus on keeping residents happy and safe. The nurse turnover rate at 50.0% is higher than the state average, and the nurse staffing hours per resident per day falls a little below what's typical in Rhode Island, coming in at 3.51 hours compared to the 3.8 state average. In recent years, the facility's had 28 deficiencies on inspection reports, including five found in October 2024, with issues like infection control, care planning, making sure beds and frames were safe, and proper nutrition and hydration for residents-these weren't found to have caused actual harm, but inspectors noted there was potential for more than minimal harm if issues weren't fixed.

There isn't much public information about the specifics of daily life, amenities, or activities, but what stands out is the family involvement, the commitment to a smaller, more personal setting, and the old-fashioned mix of dignified care, social activities, and a touch of home with a porch and well-kept yard. Harris Health Care Center LLC lets prospective residents and families schedule tours, so anyone considering a stay can see the setting and meet the staff.
