    Compassionate staff but unsafe long-term

I had a mixed experience. The staff-nurses, CNAs, therapists and social worker Carla-were compassionate, professional and often went above and beyond; rehab can be excellent and produce real recoveries. But the long-term nursing areas felt dingy and unsafe: portable commodes over toilets, up to four residents sharing one bathroom, broken call systems, understaffing, language barriers and occasional neglect; the food was also frequently awful. In short: wonderful people and clean common areas, but I'd be cautious about long-term placement until safety, staffing and dining issues are fixed.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Briarcliffe Manor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation is highly mixed, with strongly polarized experiences. A large number of reviewers describe exceptionally compassionate, professional, and skilled staff—particularly nurses, CNAs, and therapy teams—who provide personalized attention, successful rehab outcomes, and clear family communication. Multiple mentions single out social work/case management (named staff like Carla/Briana/Michelle) as exceptionally helpful, arranging video chats, coordinating discharge and aftercare, and keeping families well informed. The assisted living portion and many common areas receive repeated praise for being beautiful, clean, comfortable, and home‑like. Numerous families report that short‑term rehabilitation went very well: effective PT/OT, measurable recovery, and timely discharge home. In these positive accounts, the facility is described as warm, familylike, and safe with staff who go above and beyond.

Counterbalancing those positive reports are frequent, serious complaints centered on the long‑term nursing/medically complex side of the building. Multiple reviewers report neglectful conditions: missed medications, removed or nonfunctional call buttons, residents left unattended, and alleged safety incidents including near‑drops, improper device handling, and claims of injury or worse after discharge. Some accounts describe overmedication, dehydration, and even severe outcomes attributed to neglect. Cleanliness and sanitation are a major recurring concern in these negative reviews—reports include urine and feces odors in rooms and hallways, soiled diapers on the floor, dirty bathrooms, mold on vents, and generally filthy conditions in parts of the nursing unit. These hygiene concerns are particularly notable because they contrast with other reviewers who praise the facility's cleanliness; the pattern suggests uneven maintenance and housekeeping standards across different units or shifts.

Food and dining experiences are inconsistent: several reviewers praise delicious meals and attentive kitchen staff, while many others complain of awful food, late or cold meals, and food staff that do not notice or address poor intake. Therapy delivery is similarly variable—there are many strong reports of excellent PT/OT leading to meaningful recovery, yet multiple reviewers allege therapy promised at admission was not delivered. Administrative performance also appears mixed. Positive reviewers highlight responsive admissions, sympathetic business office staff, smooth transitions, and effective communication. In contrast, negative reports accuse leadership of being unavailable, covering up problems, failing to file required paperwork, coercing signatures, and involving police during disputes. Missing or mislabeled personal items, lost wheelchairs, no landline access, and delayed maintenance (including AC issues and water on floors) are cited as examples of operational disorganization.

Staffing and language barriers are additional fault lines. Several families praise long‑term employees and continuity of care, while others describe chronic understaffing, rushed or inattentive CNAs, limited English proficiency on certain shifts that impedes communication, and rude or uncaring staff behavior. There are strong comments that the assisted living side feels renovated and well cared for while the nursing/long‑term care wing is neglected, dingy, or in disrepair; this division is a consistent theme. Many reviewers emphasized that quality at Briarcliffe Manor may depend heavily on unit assignment, time of day/shift, and the specific staff on duty.

Patterns and takeaways: reviewers most commonly praise individual caregivers, therapy teams, social work/case managers, and certain departments (housekeeping and kitchen) for going above and beyond. At the same time, the most serious and frequently mentioned concerns relate to safety, basic hygiene, medication administration, and management responsiveness on the long‑term nursing side. The mixed reports suggest variability in standards between units and shifts rather than uniformly excellent or uniformly poor performance. Families considering Briarcliffe Manor should weigh both sets of experiences: the facility can provide excellent rehabilitation, strong therapy outcomes, compassionate staff, and good communication, but there are nontrivial reports of neglect, sanitation failures, and administrative problems that have led some families to move loved ones out or file formal complaints. If evaluating this facility, prospective residents and families may want to tour both the assisted living and nursing areas, ask direct questions about staffing levels, medication and safety protocols, bathroom access, maintenance responsiveness, and how the facility addresses and documents complaints or adverse events.
