    Attentive staff in home-like community

I moved my mother here and am very pleased. The long-term, attentive staff (especially Amber and Holly) treat residents like family, providing personalized care, excellent home-cooked meals, daily exercise and activities plus weekly entertainment. The clean, well-kept grounds and home-like common areas give me real peace of mind. I highly recommend this smaller, family-style community.

    Summary of reviews

Morningstar Assisted Living presents a mixed but distinctive profile. Many reviewers describe a small, home-like environment with personalized attention, long-tenured staff, and a family atmosphere. Common physical strengths include well-kept grounds, an outdoor courtyard, spacious shared spaces such as a large dining room with a fireplace and an activity/game room, and private-room options with half baths. The facility emphasizes social dining and daily programming, and staff often coordinate external rehabilitation when on-site services are not available.

Care and staff are central to the facility's positive reputation. Numerous accounts highlight compassionate, patient caregivers who provide individualized, person-centered support and strong daily communication with families. Staff continuity and a sense that residents are treated like family are recurring themes. The activity program is described as robust for a smaller setting โ€” daily exercise, afternoon activities, movie nights, music programs, weekly entertainment and special events are frequently noted. Meal service is another frequently cited strength: home-cooked, rotating menus with three meals and snacks, and the provision of basic toiletries and linens are advantages for resident comfort.

However, the reviews also reveal operational weaknesses that prospective families should evaluate. Leadership and management consistency appears uneven, with specific concerns about night-shift supervision, administrative responsiveness, and human-resources practices. Reviewers describe a workplace culture in which some staff feel reluctant to raise concerns; this intersects with issues around pay transparency and questions about staff credentials. Relatedly, there are statements raising serious concerns about staff conduct; these include individual, severe allegations that reflect potential gaps in oversight and incident reporting. Confidentiality lapses and inconsistent family communication are also noted and merit attention when assessing the facility.

Facility condition and services show a combination of strengths and limitations. While common areas and grounds are generally well maintained, the building is described by some as older and some private rooms as smaller than in newer communities. There is no dedicated on-site rehabilitation suite; staff do arrange external rehab services, which may require coordination and travel. Cleanliness and sanitation are praised in many accounts but flagged as inconsistent in others, particularly in certain dining/common-area observations.

Overall pattern: prospective residents and families will likely find a warm, close-knit community with strong interpersonal caregiving and active programming, paired with practical conveniences such as meals, toiletries, and outdoor space. At the same time, there are recurring operational concernsโ€”management consistency, staff oversight, confidentiality and communication practices, and some infrastructure limitationsโ€”that should be explored directly with the provider. Recommended due diligence includes in-person tours at different times (including evening/night), direct questions about incident reporting and staff training, verification of staff credentials and pay practices, and obtaining references from current families to better understand both the day-to-day care environment and administrative responsiveness.

    About Morningstar Assisted Living

Morningstar Assisted Living sits in Rapid City, SD, just a few miles from hospitals and local spots, and folks here can find a mix of privacy and companionship, with common areas indoors and outdoors for relaxing or making friends, plus activity rooms and a dining space where you can sit down for a meal that staff cooks for you every day. Residents get help from a friendly, well-trained team, whether it's moving around, bathing, managing medicine, or doing laundry, and with staff always nearby, there's support round the clock for incontinence, diabetic needs, or mobility issues, and for those who need memory care, Morningstar gives specialized help for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia-there are secure areas, mind-stimulating activities, and personalized wellness plans, all handled by staff with experience in memory care.

People can fill their days with arts and crafts, socials, fitness, and on-site Christian services, as well as off-site devotional trips if they're interested, and there are educational programs and health and wellness options in the schedule too. The housekeeping and property maintenance keep things tidy, and rooms come with safety features like wheelchair-accessible showers, bathtubs, washers and dryers, and you can get cable TV, internet, and even a small kitchen if you want it. Guest parking's available, along with a beauty salon and barbershop, and Morningstar offers transportation services for an extra fee if you need to get somewhere. Morningstar works under an LLC structure, has been open since 1997, and changed owners in November 2005; Janice Zandstra, who is also a nurse, owns the place, and the administrator is Shanna Shannon, LPN.

The place is BBB accredited with an A+ rating, follows industry rules, and will give you brochures, price details, and tours if you ask. There's an assessment before move-in, and sometimes a waiting list, so everyone gets care that's right for them. Residents can live as independently as they're able, and there's a steady sense of community with meals, activities, and support, aimed at making people feel safe and cared for, almost like family, with a focus on dignity, privacy, and keeping life comfortable as the years go by.
