    Warm clean homey care facility

I moved my father here and have had a very positive experience. The nurses, CNAs, activities director, kitchen, maintenance and housekeeping are warm, knowledgeable and accommodating; meals are made from scratch and tasty with options for dietary needs. The small, homey building is clean, bright and has a lovely courtyard and downtown views, with plenty of activities and nearby shops - I'd recommend this cute, personable place.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for Victorian Assisted Living describe a facility with several clear strengths alongside recurring operational concerns. Positive comments emphasize a small, home-like community, a clean and recently updated building with abundant natural light and scenic views, and a convenient downtown location close to shops and a hospital. Families and residents frequently note friendly, welcoming staff and specific praise for knowledgeable nurses, activity leadership, kitchen staff, and attentive housekeeping. The activities program and communal dining are commonly cited as contributors to resident quality of life.

Care and staff performance show a mixed pattern. Many reviewers describe compassionate, well-educated caregivers who make residents’ days brighter and who accommodate preferences. However, there are repeated accounts suggesting inconsistent caregiving quality and variable professionalism among staff members. Several reviews point to gaps in clinical-incident response and family communication—examples include delayed follow-up after health events and difficulties coordinating with outside providers or rehab readmissions—which indicate the facility’s clinical oversight and communication protocols can be uneven.

Dining experiences are similarly mixed. Multiple reviewers praise meals-from-scratch, desserts, and a comfortable dining room and find the shared-meal format convenient. At the same time, other families report dissatisfaction with food quality or timing, and some describe variability in meal service reliability. The facility does appear willing to accommodate dietary needs (for example, gluten-free requests), but prospective residents should confirm specific arrangements during a visit.

The facility’s activity offerings and outdoor spaces are a frequent positive: exercise classes, concerts, games, devotional programs, and arranged pet visits are listed as regular features, and landscaped courtyards, patios, and accessible outdoor areas receive favorable comments. These elements contribute to the small, personable atmosphere many families value.

Facility maintenance and management show contrasting impressions. While many note cleanliness, new construction, and attentive maintenance, other accounts raise sanitation concerns in certain common areas (sticky floors, localized odors) and inconsistencies in amenity upkeep (e.g., broken or malfunctioning equipment needing troubleshooting). Parking limitations and limited scheduled transportation were identified as practical drawbacks for visitors and residents. Several reviews reference changes in management and uneven operational consistency; some families experienced notable improvements under new management, while others highlighted ongoing management and staffing coordination issues.

Overall, Victorian Assisted Living presents strengths in community atmosphere, activities, location, and portions of its caregiving team, but also exhibits recurring operational weaknesses around consistency of care, communication during clinical events, meal-service reliability, and some housekeeping/maintenance practices. Prospective residents and families are advised to tour during meal and activity times, ask specific questions about staffing ratios and after-hours clinical-response protocols, verify dietary and pet policies, and clarify transportation and readmission procedures to assess whether the facility’s current practices match their priorities.

    About Victorian Assisted Living

Victorian Assisted Living sits on Columbus Street in Rapid City, right on a 1.64-acre lot with room for parking up to 20 cars, and it's been there since 1997, so it's got a little history to it now, and folks seem to think pretty well of it, what with a 3.5-star rating across eight reviews that point out both its good parts and places it could do better. The building itself, called The Victorian, is all single-floor, big at almost 22,000 square feet, and you'll find private bedrooms-48 in total-with private bathrooms for everyone, which makes it feel more comfortable and personal for each resident because everyone can have their own space, and all of it's set out in three wings, circling a roomy common area where people can get together to eat, talk or watch something, and even an on-site hair salon, so people don't have to travel far for a trim. Folks can stay in independent living if they want an active, busy life without a lot of chores, or they can get more help through assisted living, with support around-the-clock for things like taking medicine, washing up, getting dressed, or moving from place to place, and the staff, including onsite nurses, can help with refilling prescriptions or working with doctors outside the facility, so you don't have to worry about getting left out of your health care. Victorian Assisted Living's got a lot of the things people want for daily life, like laundry and dry cleaning, cleaning services, special meals for folks with food allergies or dietary restrictions, and rooms all set up with furniture and phones, plus there's an emergency alert system in each room for peace of mind.

There's plenty of space to stretch out, with an outdoor courtyard and a covered patio for sunny days and fresh air, and inside, big lounge areas with new furniture make it feel a bit more like home, so you're not stuck in your room all day if you don't want to be. Meal times happen in a group dining room where cooks make restaurant-like food, and people gather to eat and talk-no need to cook or clean up if you don't want to. Recreational and social activities, both community-sponsored and run by residents themselves, fill the days with arts, games, educational classes, and movie nights, and there's a strong focus on making sure everyone can join in, whether it's a walking path for some exercise, a garden for those who like to put their hands in the dirt, or an arts room for folks who want to paint or do crafts. Wheelchairs can get everywhere you need to go, with accessible spaces all over. Transportation is available for outings or trips to appointments, so residents aren't stuck on campus. All care plans involve residents and their families, working together to meet every need, and the philosophy at Victorian Assisted Living centers around dignity, privacy, choice, and making people feel comfortable in a place that feels safe and familiar. The staff stick to what they call the Pillars of Care, which means they try to cover not just the physical help like bathing or medicine, but also social, mental, and emotional needs, so people can feel part of a warm and friendly community, not left out or forgotten. The location's close to Rapid City's medical services and local sights. Victorian Assisted Living focuses on fostering an environment where people can keep their independence as much as possible, get help when they need it, and keep engaged with friends, neighbors, and family.
