    Compassionate attentive staff and care

I placed my loved one here and was very pleased with the compassionate, attentive staff - nurses, CNAs and therapists consistently went above and beyond. The facility is clean, comfortable and secure, with excellent rehab/speech therapy, warm meals, plenty of activities and supportive administration (Ariel, Niki, Lily and Brenda stood out). Visits felt like family; I'd recommend this well-run, comforting place for rehab or long-term care.

    Summary of reviews

Hunter's Pond presents a mixed picture in these reviews. Many families and patients describe strong clinical strengths: a skilled rehabilitation team, a large therapy gym, and therapists who are proactive in restoring function. Numerous comments praise individual nurses and CNAs for compassionate, attentive care and highlight a clean, bright facility with private bathrooms and in-room showers that support dignity and independence. Activity programming, from bingo to visiting DJs, and an active housekeeping/kitchen staff contribute to a pleasant communal environment for many residents. Several reviewers also noted smoother operations and morale after recent management or ownership changes.

Alongside positive accounts, a recurring pattern of operational weaknesses emerges. Staffing levels and coverage are frequently characterized as inconsistent, which reviewers link to delayed responses to call buttons, prolonged waits for assistance with personal care, missed or late medication administration, and uneven bathing schedules. These staffing gaps are also tied to concerns about monitoring: some families described missed wound checks, slow pain-management follow-up, and limited physician or nurse-practitioner presence for clinical oversight. Recordkeeping and administrative documentation lapses were noted, contributing to confusion about medication timing, therapy reports, and discharge planning.

Dining and nutrition feedback is mixed. Some reviews praise customized meals and attentive kitchen staff, while others describe limited portioning, poor preparation of specific items, and a lack of consistent light or therapeutic meal planning for residents with conditions such as diabetes. Activities and communal amenities are generally viewed positively; the facility’s therapy resources and social programming are frequently cited as strengths that support recovery and quality of life.

A subset of reviews raises more serious concerns about transparency and property handling. There are allegations regarding withholding information from next of kin, restrictions on retrieving personal items, and missing or unaccounted-for valuables. There are also pest-control and sanitation concerns reported in some units. These claims are serious and distinct from routine operational criticisms; families considering placement should inquire specifically about property-handling policies, documentation procedures, and pest-control protocols.

Overall, Hunter's Pond appears to offer substantial rehabilitative resources and many staff members who provide compassionate care in a well-maintained environment. However, recurring themes of inconsistent staffing, medication- and monitoring-related lapses, communication failures with families, and isolated but serious allegations about transparency and property warrant careful inquiry. Prospective residents and families would benefit from in-person visits, direct questions about staffing ratios and on-call clinical coverage, review of medication administration processes, and clear policies about personal property and family notification to determine whether the facility’s strengths align with their needs.

About Hunters Pond Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center

Hunters Pond Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center sits in San Antonio, Texas, serving as a nursing home and rehab care place with 128 certified beds and about 118 residents each day, and while it's got a 3.5-star rating from 62 reviews, you find that it runs under the Ensign Group but is owned by Guadalupe County Hospital Board and managed by Canary Bend Healthcare, Inc. since late 2019, with Shane Brady and Soon Burnam in charge there, and people say the staff is friendly and works hard to create a caring environment for the folks who live there. The center offers 24-hour nursing care, physical therapy, occupational and speech therapy, wound care, IV therapy, memory care, hospice care, pain management, and long-term care, and you can also find restorative care, private skilled suites if needed, outpatient therapy services, and social activities, plus they've got a full-service dining room and try to keep the place clean and safe for everyone.

Nurses and therapists use both high-tech and hands-on methods and make custom plans for each resident, and the care team includes nurses, clinicians, and therapists who base treatments on up-to-date research to meet each person's needs, but the nurse staffing level is 3.01 hours per resident per day, which falls below the Texas average of 3.4, and they've also got a nurse turnover rate of 53.5% compared to the state's 51.8%. Hunters Pond takes Medicare and Medicaid, and you see them working with families, doctors, and the residents themselves to come up with care plans, and they accept admissions around the clock, any day.

Now when it comes to inspections, Hunters Pond Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center has had a total of 44 deficiencies listed in the inspection reports, and these include problems with infection control, making sure residents are protected from accidents, and not always following rules about reporting abuse, neglect, and exploitation on time, plus there have been reports that care plans for residents weren't always complete, which the January 2025 complaint report backed up, noting four deficiencies, including infection issues. The facility has a long-term care ombudsman service where residents or families can get help with complaints confidentially, free of charge. Though Hunters Pond aims to provide high-quality care and keep everyone safe and comfortable, those considering the community should review inspection reports and compare with other local options, based on what's important to them or their family.
