    Caring staff but medication concerns

I'm a family member of a long-term resident. Overall I appreciated the loving, hardworking staff and management - the place feels cozy and home-like, residents are treated like family, meals are generally good and on time, the yard and deck are lovely, and the facility is usually clean and comfortable. That said, we had real concerns about medication management, diabetes-friendly meals, and occasional bathroom/cleaning lapses as my mom's care needs increased. I'd recommend it for compassionate, everyday care but advise close oversight of meds and special-diet needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment from the reviews is mixed but leans positive regarding the interpersonal aspects of Country Oaks Assisted Living. The most consistent praise centers on the staff — described repeatedly as caring, loving, and treating residents like family. Multiple reviewers highlight personalized attention, companionship among residents, and staff going above and beyond (for example, increasing care as a resident’s condition worsened and providing what one family described as care that exceeded hospice). The small, home-like environment, characterful long-term residents, and presence of pets/kittens contribute to a cozy atmosphere that many families appreciate. Physical attributes such as a lovely deck and professionally kept yard, easy parking, and recent improvements like new flooring are also frequently mentioned as positives.

Dining and daily life are generally seen as strengths by many reviewers: meals are often on time and described as good by a number of families, and staff-organized activities (dance parties, planned events) and small comforts (cut fruit, iced drinks on hot days) are cited as enhancing quality of life. Several reviewers emphasize that residents are allowed to maintain independence and be themselves, which suits those who prefer a lightly supervised, social setting. Long-term stays and repeated recommendations, along with statements like "we love what we do" and nearly a decade in business, suggest stability and a committed caregiving team for many residents.

However, there are notable and recurring concerns that require attention. Medication management is a prominent negative theme: reviewers report medication errors and unease about how controlled/pain medications are handled, including worries about addiction risk. Diabetes care is another significant issue — multiple reviews characterize meals as diabetic-unfriendly or generic, and specifically state that diabetes management is challenging in this setting. Hygiene and housekeeping feedback is inconsistent: while some families say the facility is always clean, others report serious lapses such as bathrooms and showers not being cleaned for months. In at least one detailed case, a resident repeatedly refused showers for extended periods, which raises questions about personal care protocols and how staff manage resistant behaviors.

Management and safety concerns are mixed as well. Many reviewers praise management and say residents are well taken care of, yet a subset of reviews describes owner conflict, poor service, and families who would not recommend the facility. Environmental comfort issues are mentioned (excessive heat or AC costs affecting temperature), and cigarette smoke near resident rooms is reported, which could impact resident health and comfort. The "lightly supervised independence" that is a benefit for some residents may be inadequate for others, and reviewers note that the facility may not be appropriate for people who need closer medical supervision or consistent diabetes and medication oversight.

In summary, Country Oaks Assisted Living appears to provide a warm, home-like environment with devoted staff, meaningful social opportunities, and generally good meals and grounds maintenance according to many families. These strengths make it a strong fit for residents seeking companionship, a small-community feel, and personalized attention. At the same time, recurring reports about medication errors, diabetes care shortcomings, inconsistent housekeeping, and some management/owner conflicts are significant concerns. Prospective families should weigh the facility’s strong interpersonal culture and home environment against these safety and clinical management issues, and should ask direct questions and seek documentation about medication administration protocols, diabetes meal plans, cleaning schedules, and how staff handle personal-care refusal and smoking policies before making a placement decision.
