    Clean caring staff, excellent therapy

I had a very positive stay - the building was clean and welcoming, staff were friendly, attentive and treated residents like family. Admissions (Mikaela) and the rehab team (Ugo and others) were compassionate and responsive, therapy/gym were excellent, and nurses/CNAs went above and beyond; I'd highly recommend it overall, with just a little room for improvement.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews for River Edge Rehab & Nursing present a mixed but instructive picture. Many families and residents describe highly positive clinical and rehabilitative experiences: staff are frequently characterized as compassionate, attentive, and professional, nursing leadership and attending physicians are viewed as knowledgeable, and the rehabilitation program (including a newly renovated therapy gym) receives consistent praise. Admissions and some administrative staff are commonly described as helpful and well organized, and maintenance and housekeeping are noted as strengths in numerous comments. The facility also appears to sustain a range of engaging activities and community partnerships that families appreciate.

At the same time, a recurrent operational theme is inconsistent frontline capacity. Several reviews indicate staffing shortages on nursing units that coincide with slow responses to call bells and delays in attending to residents' needs. Those staffing constraints are linked in some accounts to gaps in transfer and fall‑prevention practices and delayed assistance with eating and toileting needs; reviewers describe these as systemic timing and responsiveness problems rather than isolated single-person concerns. Related operational weaknesses include inconsistent meal quality and continuity, sanitation and odor concerns in particular areas, and weaknesses in laundry and personal-belonging management.

Communication and procedural issues are another notable pattern. Multiple comments identify gaps in incident documentation and in timely family notification when events occur. There are also concerns framed around medication handling and coordination of off-site transport (for example, for dialysis or medical appointments). Reception and front-desk interactions are described variably — some reviewers praise specific staff, while others report brusque or unhelpful encounters — suggesting uneven customer-service practices.

Overall, the facility demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation, therapeutic engagement, and in caregiving by many individual staff members. However, recurring themes around staffing levels, responsiveness, sanitation control in some areas, personal-item management, and documentation/communication practices suggest operational vulnerabilities families should evaluate when considering placement. There are also a small number of serious allegations — including concerns about missing belongings and concerns following a resident's death — that would warrant direct inquiry with the facility, review of incident records, and, if appropriate, verification through inspection or regulatory channels. Prospective residents and families would be advised to visit in person, ask about current staffing ratios and incident-reporting procedures, review therapy outcomes, and speak with recent families about how the facility handled any adverse events.

About River Edge Rehab & Nursing

River Edge Rehab & Nursing sits at 1221 Rosser Avenue in Waynesboro, Virginia, and has 109 licensed beds, a large facility that offers skilled nursing, long-term care, and rehabilitation services for older adults and people recovering from illness or injury, and it's got certified beds and an average daily resident capacity of around 95 people, which means there's a fair number of folks calling it home or staying for a short while to recover. Dedicated areas for therapy and recovery mean residents get access to a variety of supportive healthcare features and specialized therapy programs, with social activities and events that try to match up with people's interests, memory care for those with dementia or Alzheimer's, and there's hospice and palliative care as well as respite care for families who just need a break. You can expect a registered nurse on site at all times, along with a medical director and area physicians on call, and while there are licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants to help, the nurse staffing hours average about 2.97 per resident per day, which is a bit below the state average, though the nurse turnover rate sits somewhat under the state number, at 44.9%. The facility's had 26 deficiencies found in inspection reports, including issues around resident rights and quality of life, and there's been specific citations for not quickly telling residents, families, or doctors about health or safety issues, and for failing to provide safe pain management for a resident who needed it, as well as one infection-related deficiency. River Edge operates with a full-time staff of about 72.3 people and is run by The Portopiccolo Group, having been sold to Curis in May 2018, and sits under the umbrella of Eastern Healthcare Group. Nurse staffing standards are set by federal rules that roll out over three years, with the current requirement being at least 3.45 hours of nursing care daily per patient, including at least 2.45 hours from CNAs and 0.55 from registered nurses, and the facility's actively working toward those goals even though the reported nurse staffing hours are still a bit short. Room rates as of now are $210 a day for a private room and $190 for a semi-private room, and people can expect amenities and features typical for a skilled nursing facility, including advanced medical equipment, a nurse call system, and spaces designed for safety and comfort. The administrator, Mr. Brian Reinmann, oversees operations with an eye on providing personalized, compassionate care; the staff try to treat residents like family and offer care tailored to individual needs, whether someone's there for long-term care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, or another service. River Edge Rehab & Nursing is a member of the Virginia Health Care Association and Virginia Center for Assisted Living, and it aims to give comprehensive post-acute care in an environment that's supportive, aiming to help residents stay as comfortable and safe as possible, even though the facility's not free from citations or deficiencies, and it continues to make improvements while providing care for residents from Waynesboro and the surrounding area.
