    Caring attentive staff restored mobility

I'm grateful for the caring, attentive staff-CNAs, nurses, activities team and rehab therapists who helped my wife walk again. The facility is clean, bright and family-friendly with good medical care, engaging activities and administration that goes above and beyond; I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed, with clear strengths alongside recurring concerns. Many reviewers praise the interpersonal side of care โ€” describing staff as caring, friendly, and very good with residents โ€” and highlight administration that sometimes goes above and beyond. Clinical care is noted positively by several reviewers as "good medical care," and activities are described as engaging. Multiple comments emphasize the facilityโ€™s cleanliness, a bright and cheerful environment, and that residents are well groomed, which together paint a generally favorable picture of daily life for some residents.

However, a number of strong negative themes also appear repeatedly. Staffing consistency is a major issue: reviewers mention turnover and new staff who are unfamiliar with routines or residents, which creates variability in service. Alongside turnover, there are reports of rude behavior, laziness, or poor job performance by certain staff members, and a few reviewers assert a lack of decency or humanity in how some situations are handled. These personnel problems contribute to broader quality concerns and unhappy residents or family members expressing dissatisfaction.

Management and communication are another area of friction. While some describe administration as proactive, others report poor management practices and difficulty getting responses โ€” for example, phones going unanswered. This mixed portrayal suggests that leadership performance may be inconsistent or that communication systems are unreliable at times. The combination of management and staffing issues appears to feed into the negative vibe some reviewers describe inside the facility.

Facility environment is mostly praised for being clean and cheerful, and several reviewers call the staff and people "amazing," indicating real strengths in personal compassion and atmosphere. That said, there are isolated but noticeable complaints about an unpleasant odor outside and an overall negative vibe reported by some; these specifics indicate that environmental and maintenance issues may occasionally surface or be more noticeable to certain visitors or residents.

Taken together, the reviews suggest a facility with meaningful positives โ€” caring staff, good clinical care in many cases, engaging activities, and a generally clean, bright setting โ€” but also with significant inconsistencies driven primarily by staffing turnover, variable staff behavior, and management/communication shortcomings. The mixed feedback points to a center that can provide very good care and a good resident experience under the right staff and leadership conditions, but which may require improvements in hiring, training, oversight, and communication to ensure those positive experiences are consistent for all residents and families.

    About Clay Healthcare Center

Clay Healthcare Center sits at 1053 Clinic Dr, Ivydale, WV, right in Clay County, and the place stays open all day and night, every day of the week, so you can always find someone there working to help folks get the care they need, and while a lot goes on inside those walls, the focus always seems to be on giving good, patient-centered care, whether someone's there just for a short stay after surgery, or maybe for something longer because they need a little more help day to day. People say the place is family-owned, and you'll see that in how the staff-including a dedicated group of nurses and therapists-gets to know not just the residents, but also their families, and tries to keep everyone in the loop when it comes to planning what's best for each person.

You'll find all sorts of nursing and medical specialties packed into one location, because there's a skilled nursing team, led by Brenda Nettles as Director of Nursing and with Dusty Hern as Assistant Director of Nursing, so when someone needs wound care, medication help, or even palliative and hospice services, they can get it there, and therapy staff step in when residents need physical, occupational, or speech therapy, whether they're recovering from an operation or just want to keep moving and speaking as well as they can. People can get short-term rehab too, which comes in handy for folks who want to go back home strong, and there's help for long-term needs, plus respite care, so families can take a safe break knowing their loved one is in good hands.

For those dealing with memory troubles like Alzheimer's or dementia, there are secure areas and specialized care set up to help keep them safe and engaged, along with daily memory-boosting activities, and folks who need help managing daily routines get what they need too, from meal prep and medication reminders to personal care and social outings. The staff speak several languages, including English, Spanish, Russian, and Vietnamese, making it easier for people from different backgrounds to feel comfortable, and since the facility works with area hospitals like Providence Portland Medical Center, Sacred Heart, and others, residents benefit from strong medical connections if something comes up.

Living spaces come fully furnished, with kitchenettes, private bathrooms, air conditioning, cable, phone, and wi-fi, and nobody has to worry about chores, since housekeeping and laundry happen like clockwork, plus maintenance is handled so residents can spend their time taking part in activities and social events that fill the calendar-bingo, noodle ball exercise, crafts, food projects, day trips, and a wellness program, as well as community events and plenty of chances to get involved. There are rooms and gathering spots like a dining hall, garden, gaming room, fitness room, library, wellness center, computer area, and a beauty salon, all meant for folks to enjoy each other's company or have a little quiet time if that's what they want. Outdoor spaces are there when the weather's nice, and there's help with getting around too, thanks to transportation options for errands or outings that aren't medical.

Clay Healthcare Center keeps the focus on making sure everyone feels like they belong, building strong relationships with residents and families, planning care together, and encouraging community, all while providing skilled nursing, therapy, memory support, assisted living help, independent living services, and long-term or post-acute care under one roof, just a short trip from Wallback Lake, Elk River, and the Elk River Trail.
