      About St. Joseph Medical Center

St. Joseph Medical Center, at 1919 La Branch in Houston, has been around since 1887 and is known as Houston's first hospital, and folks say it's been called "Houston's birthplace" because so many babies got their start there, with a maternity building from way back in 1938 and all that. The main hospital has a big setup-there's 792 beds, ICUs for adults, kids, babies, and even a Cardiac ICU and burn care, plus a big psychiatric unit with 99 beds, so they cover a lot of ground. They do surgeries, help people heal, and have emergency departments, even Level III and Level IV Trauma Centers at the Downtown and Heights Campus, so you know they can handle rough stuff if it comes in the door. The place has a long history and was run by the Sisters of Charity, then became part of Christus Health, switched over to Steward Health Care, and even had Baylor's pediatric care before Texas Children's showed up, so it's been through a lot but kept growing and taking care of people.

There's lots of different services, not just regular medical but also palliative care, hospice, mental health, memory care, home care with trained aides, physical rehab, infectious disease management, and disaster emergency plans, so they really try to cover what comes up. Folks needing women's healthcare have Women's Healthcare Associates of Houston, OB doctors, a special Women's Center for labor, delivery, and postpartum, and care for breast health with education and screenings for breast cancer. They offer testing labs, internal medicine, pediatric specialties, heart and orthopedic services, infection control, and regular checkups too. You'll find both inpatient and outpatient options, emergency and urgent care, and chronic disease management for those who need ongoing support. They do spiritual care with chaplains, ministry, prayer, and hold Mass in a chapel named for Harry S. and Isabel C. Cameron, and anyone can drop by for support or quiet prayer time.

The hospital has several lobbies, waiting areas, on-site dining like Joe's Cafe or the St. Joseph Cafeteria, plus a handy gift shop in the George W. Strake Building. There's parking garages with valet service in some areas, and clear visiting hours for different units, and friendly concierge staff who help folks find their way in and out. Seniors get housing, assisted living, and memory care, and specialized setups for Alzheimer's or dementia that help keep people safe and comfortable. The hospital tries to keep people healthy and active, offering activity programs and nutritious meals, and staff even get awards for being helpful and friendly, which makes a big difference when you're staying somewhere new or scary. The hospital's seen a lot over the years, like treating Texas City disaster victims back in 1947, inventing devices to help newborns, and supporting indigent patients when needed, so there's a sense that they take care of folks from all walks of life. It's a big general hospital that keeps changing but sticks to caring for people, and you can really see all the things they do for seniors and their families.
