Manor in Colfax, Washington sits in a historic building that has served many purposes over the years, starting as a hospital that opened its doors more than a century ago and later shifting to assisted living for seniors and people with developmental disabilities, and these days people mostly know Manor for the public tours and ghost hunts that draw in folks curious about the tales of paranormal activity-so much so that famous shows like Paranormal Lockdown, Ghost Adventures, and Ghost Files have filmed here, and visitors sometimes talk about hearing footsteps, voices, shadows that move in empty rooms, and even doors that open on their own, with stories centered around four named spirits like Michael, John, Father Ryan, and Rosemary who are linked to past records. The building itself has a chapel in the northeast corner, living quarters for Sisters and nurses, and patient rooms on the second and third floors, plus an old surgical department on the fourth floor, and over the years, the place saw many additions, like the east and west wings completed in 1917 and 1928, as well as updates like the bigger kitchen fitted with refrigeration back in 1929 and a laundry building that once helped keep hospital operations running. There are still unique features that last through time, such as eight tri-foil windows, buttressed walls, and a wrought iron tie-back on the chimney, and nearby stands one of the only seven lich-gates in the country, reminding visitors of its past as an Episcopal church from 1896, which also hosts weddings, funerals, photography sessions, and small events, though now the main building is mostly vacant and at risk as plans for preservation remain uncertain. The facility, now working with Whitman Health & Rehab, offers physical rehab, assisted living, and memory care to seniors, focusing on a supportive, safe space with help for daily activities, social time, and care for those with dementia or Alzheimer's, providing meals made with quality food and staff who give non-medical support and companionship to those who live there. Visitors and groups can book different kinds of experiences, from four-hour daytime history tours that let people bring cameras and walk through the building, to long overnight investigations where equipment like SLS cameras and shadow grids are handed out, and before entering, everyone signs a waiver, while special events and fundraising ghost tours continue to support efforts to keep Manor standing, with the building earning its spot on state and national registers for historic places and a mark as one of the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation's most endangered properties.
