    Nice community, poor clinical care

I found the community beautiful, very clean and comfortable with lovely common areas, lots of activities, and excellent rehab/therapy staff. However the dining was consistently awful and the facility is clearly understaffed - CNAs often seemed unqualified or distracted and turnover is high. I experienced (or saw) ignored call buttons, long delays for toileting, meds and wound/diabetic care, and poor communication from nurses and administration. Those care lapses led to serious issues (weight loss, extra 24-hour sitter costs) and left me feeling the management was clueless. In short: great place for independent living or short rehab, but I would not trust it for higher nursing or dementia care.

    About Brookdale University Park

Brookdale University Park sits at 400 University Park Drive in Birmingham, AL, and offers a range of senior living options, so folks can move in when they're active and stay as they need more help, which some people call "aging in place," and there's independent living, assisted living, memory care for those with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and even hospice and palliative care, so you'll find different kinds of support under one roof. The community is pet-friendly, with apartments in studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom sizes, and there's a secure environment, which helps keep residents with memory issues safe and gives everyone peace of mind, plus there's an emergency alert system in place.

The place has paved walking paths, courtyard gardens with flowers, and landscaped outdoor areas with views of Shades Creek, and inside you'll see a grand staircase, reception area, library with comfortable seats, business center, modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances, fitness center, chapel, dining room with chandeliers and formal table settings, along with a cafe-bistro where you can sit and visit. They offer flexible dining options, and chefs work on menus to keep meals nutritious and enjoyable, which a lot of residents seem to appreciate, and there are lots of activities, like bingo, yoga, educational programs, movie nights, social gatherings, outings to local dining or shops, fitness classes, and creative pursuits for those who like to keep busy.

Brookdale University Park supports people who need help with daily activities such as bathing, getting dressed, or managing medication, and care plans are personalized to fit each person, so nobody feels like just another number, and the staff is available around the clock if someone needs help at any hour, which can give residents and families peace of mind. The continuum of care means you might move from independent or assisted living to memory care or skilled nursing without needing to leave the community you already know, and there are resources for lifestyle planning and caregiver support, along with therapy programs tailored for specific needs. The memory care communities have specialized programs and a secure setting to help people with confusion or a history of wandering, and there's extra support for emotional and cognitive well-being.

You'll find plenty of chances to meet new people in the "Active Adult/55+ Communities," as well as in programs under "Continuing Care Retirement Communities," and there are always new events and daily activities filling up the calendar. Pets are welcome in the apartments, which makes the place feel more like home for animal lovers, and you'll see residents out walking or just enjoying a quiet morning in the gardens. Several health and safety features have been added specifically for senior living, including a clinic on-site and at-home care for those who want to stay in their apartments but need a bit more help.
