    About Chaparral House

Chaparral House stands on 2.4 creek-side acres on Allston Way in West Berkeley, California, right by Strawberry Creek Park and surrounded by places like Berkeley Montessori School and Strawberry Creek Lodge, and you know you get to walk through secure gardens where you can hear the Strawberry Creek and find benches, a gazebo, and places for quiet or strolls, and they grow things in an organic garden too, and there's even a Horticultural Therapy Project. The place is a nonprofit, licensed eldercare center that's Joint Commission Certified in both Post-Acute Care and Memory Care, offering both assisted living and long-term skilled nursing care with a focus on caring for people with memory impairments, and the care team includes licensed nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants on duty around the clock, with a high staff-to-resident ratio.

Chaparral House can care for forty-nine elders in more than twenty private rooms and over ten semi-private rooms, and all rooms are comfortable and spacious with garden views, a private bathroom, cable and telephone readiness, emergency call buttons, closets, and fully adjustable hospital beds that look like regular beds. The hallways have plenty of seats for residents to stop and visit, and the home feels cozy with homelike décor, eclectic art, colorful walls, and you'll find spa-like bathing rooms with Jacuzzi tubs that have mechanical lifts. Safety's strong here with features like a "Code Alert" wander alarm system, electronic door monitoring, a strong security alarm system, and rooms ready for people who need extra help.

There's a community-based Board of Directors, and a Family and Friends Council stays active, and you'll see staff encourage residents to make choices and contribute how they like, or join activities led by a full-time Activities Director-things like exercise sessions, group discussions, art classes, celebrations, and music, and there are current events groups too. Residents have access to special therapy services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with therapy from an on-staff chaplain, plus on-site lab, x-ray, and pharmacy services. Meals include therapeutic diets, self-selected menus with vegetarian options, and staff make sure prescribed medications are given as doctors order. The environment tries to respect privacy and self-esteem, letting people be as independent as possible, and folks can join religious programs like weekly services or Jewish Shabbat and holiday celebrations. Chaparral House has a nonprofit, community-minded approach and tries to help residents stay comfortable, safe, and connected every day.
