Shell Point Retirement Community sits on 700 acres along the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers, Florida, and has been around since 1968, serving about 2,400 residents age 60 and older. As Florida's largest single-site Life Plan Community, Shell Point offers many living choices, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care, all spread through neighborhoods with names like The Island, The Woodlands, The Enclave, The Estuary, Eagles Preserve, and Palm Acres, each with its own special features like water views, golf course access, and tennis courts. There are over 40 floor plans, from studio apartments to three-bedroom homes, and the neighborhood is gated for safety.
Residents can pick from four types of Life Care Contracts: A-75, C-Fee, Type A, or Type B, which include options for partial or full refunds of entry fees to estates, depending on the contract. As a non-profit organization, Shell Point aims to provide support wherever needed, whether for basic help or more advanced healthcare. There are two medical centers, a full-service pharmacy that delivers right to homes, and onsite banks for financial needs. The Health Services at Shell Point cover everything from assisted living, home health, and home care, to memory care, hospice care, behavioral health, physical therapy, and skilled nursing-supported by fully-equipped nursing and rehabilitation facilities, and options like personalized care plans, medication management, and 24/7 medical response.
For assisted living, residents may choose from three facilities: The Arbor, King's Crown-which has 120 private residences-and The Springs, all offering help with daily activities from trained staff. For memory care, Shell Point runs a secure program dedicated to residents with Alzheimer's or dementia, with tailored plans and special support. The health services include physicians and specialists on site, and there's a guest house motel for visitors.
Daily life comes with choice and activity; there are six restaurants, some open to the public, offering three meals a day, with options for panoramic views or casual dining. The community has the Shell Point Fitness Center and supervised fitness classes, the Aquatic Club for pool exercise, and a golf course, the Shell Point Golf Club, with 18 holes. There are craft rooms, a beauty salon, a billiards room, and sun rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows. Residents can take part in art, music, educational classes, gardening, or outdoor activities like boating and watching manatees. Concerts and world-class events are held on campus, and The Village Church acts as the spiritual center, along with the Gulf Coast Community Church.
Shell Point provides transportation, wellness programs, social events, and spiritual gatherings. The Legacy Foundation on campus offers financial management and estate administration services. Residents can access the Shell Point Gift Shop, known for its sea shell collection and friendly staff. The community stays active and engaged with amenities and services, from recreational opportunities and learning programs to restaurant dining and neighborhood gatherings, all supported by over 1,000 employees who aim to help each resident feel at home, safe, and supported in whatever stage of aging they're in.
