    Beautiful gated riverfront campus; impressed

I visited Moosehaven and was impressed - beautiful, gated riverfront campus on the St. Johns with caring staff, 24-hour medical support, and active, family-friendly events (Halloween, big 4th of July fireworks, chili cook-offs, car shows) that keep residents social and happy. Villas are lovely and secure with tons of amenities and multi-level care, though big events can mean traffic and long lines, and I noticed some upkeep and food-quality issues; the Moose membership/asset rule is also restrictive. Overall I'd return and seriously consider retiring there.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews portray Moosehaven as a highly active, community-focused retirement and continuing care campus with many strong positives and a few recurring concerns. The dominant sentiment is very favorable: reviewers consistently praise the location on the St. Johns River, the gated and secure setting, the breadth of care options (independent living through skilled nursing and memory care), and a robust slate of amenities and social programming. Many reviewers describe Moosehaven as a friendly, family-oriented place where residents “want for nothing,” staff are caring and dedicated, and there is an abundance of events that draw both residents and the public.

Care quality and medical support: Multiple reviews highlight high-quality care and the continuing care model as major strengths. There are specific mentions of 24-hour medical personnel, exemplary care in memory care and skilled nursing units, and positive experiences from families and former employees who miss working there. Memory care units are repeatedly described as new, clean, and spacious, with 24/7 care. The ability to transition between levels of care on one campus is a strong selling point for prospective residents and their families.

Staff, leadership, and admissions: Staff receive overwhelmingly positive comments: described as helpful, kind, dedicated, and knowledgeable. Reviewers compliment leadership and the admissions/tour experience (one named staff member received specific praise). Several accounts also describe Moosehaven as a wonderful place to work, citing fulfilling work with residents and a supportive environment. These consistent compliments point to strong resident-facing culture and positive internal morale.

Facilities and amenities: Moosehaven’s physical and social amenities are among the most frequently mentioned positives. The campus offers a wide range of on-site features — a large indoor pool, bowling alley, movie theater, barbershop/beauty shop, woodworking shop, fishing pier, exercise rooms, and secure transportation/shuttle service. Apartments and villas come in various sizes; some reviewers note very spacious units with generous closet/storage space, while others describe certain apartments as small but nice. The riverfront setting, beautiful grounds, and gated community atmosphere are repeatedly cited as reasons residents and visitors enjoy the campus.

Activities and events: One of Moosehaven’s standout strengths is its active social calendar and community events. Annual and large-scale events such as 4th of July fireworks, Halloween festivals, chili cook-offs, car shows, concerts, and public celebrations are prominent features. These events are described as well-organized, family-friendly, and draw large crowds; reviewers repeatedly say these are highlights for residents and the surrounding community. Regular activities like bingo, crafts, bowling, fishing, swimming, outings to lunch/shopping, and volunteer programs contribute to a lively daily life.

Dining: Dining receives mixed but mostly positive feedback. Many reviewers praise the cafeteria and describe good meals, snacks, and an overall enjoyable dining experience. However, a recurring critique asks for more variety, fresher fruit, and more appetizing preparation in some cases. A few reviewers explicitly called out improper food preparation or a need for menu improvements, while others noted affordability and good quality. This suggests dining quality is generally acceptable but has room for consistent enhancement, especially in variety and fresh options.

Maintenance and appearance: Reviews show a notable split on maintenance and appearance. Numerous visitors and residents describe the campus as beautifully maintained and clean, while others report inconsistent upkeep: pressure-washing needed in courtyards, outdoor furniture and cushions requiring replacement or refurbishment, and some dreary or poorly landscaped sections. These conflicting reports suggest the overall grounds and buildings are attractive in many areas but that maintenance attention is uneven across the campus.

Management, policy, and logistics concerns: The most significant policy concern cited is the Moose membership requirement tied to asset transfer, described as restrictive and potentially a barrier for prospective residents. Event logistics also surface as an operational pain point: several reviewers described heavy traffic, poor egress planning, and long waits (up to an hour) to leave after big events. While events themselves receive high marks for organization and entertainment value, site access and traffic management could be improved.

Patterns and recommendations: The reviews paint a picture of a community with outstanding social life, excellent staff and care options, and a beautiful riverfront setting that many residents and visitors love. At the same time, there are actionable improvement areas: standardize and prioritize exterior and furniture maintenance, improve consistency and variety in dining (more fresh fruit and menu variety), and refine event traffic/egress planning. Additionally, greater transparency or flexibility around the Moose membership/asset-transfer policy could reduce barriers and concerns for prospective residents and families.

Conclusion: In sum, Moosehaven is presented as a very attractive retirement and continuing care community with a robust offering of amenities, active programming, and caring staff. It excels at community life and clinical continuity but shows some inconsistencies in physical upkeep, dining variety, and event logistics. For people valuing strong social engagement, riverfront living, and a full continuum of care, Moosehaven emerges from these reviews as a strong, often highly recommended choice, provided they are comfortable with the Moose membership requirement and the occasional maintenance or traffic-related inconveniences.
