    Compassionate clean activities poor meals

My mom lives here and I'm overall pleased: the caregiving staff are compassionate, attentive and thorough, meds and physical therapy are excellent, hospice is available, and the place is very clean with activities (bingo, gardening, arts & crafts) that she enjoys. Major negatives: meals are poor, rooms are shared (four to a room with curtains), the facility feels old and sometimes unorganized with outdated equipment and occasional lapses in training/courtesy. Convenient and safe - a solid care option on Oahu if you can live with basic food and communal rooms.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but leans positive regarding direct care and the day-to-day attention residents receive. Multiple summaries highlight staff as a central strength: described repeatedly as friendly, caring, compassionate, attentive, patient, and thorough. Reviewers specifically call out good medication management, effective physical therapy, cleanliness, and hospice services. Several family members noted that their relatives are comfortable and like the facility, and at least one reviewer called it the "best on Oahu," indicating strong satisfaction in some cases.

Despite strong praise for caregiving, there are recurring facility- and service-related concerns. The building and equipment are described as old and outdated, and several reviewers note a lack of outdoor areas or green space for residents. Privacy is a clear issue: rooms that house four people with only curtains for separation were mentioned, and the presence of shared rooms appears to be a consistent drawback for those valuing privacy. Cleanliness was praised in some reviews, but the physical limitations of an older facility remain a common theme.

Dining and organizational issues stand out as prominent negatives. Multiple reviewers explicitly criticized the meals — calling them "very poor" or noting that residents disliked the food. Operationally, a few summaries described the facility as unorganized and suggested a need for more staff training. While many staff members are praised, there are reports of inconsistent behavior: some staff are courteous and attentive, while others appear task-focused, discourteous, or in need of additional training. This variation suggests that overall quality may depend on which staff are on duty and that management could address consistency through training and oversight.

Activities and resident engagement are a relative strength. The facility offers recreational programming such as bingo, arts and crafts, and gardening, which are mentioned positively and noted as things residents enjoy. Accessibility and convenience (proximity to reviewers' homes on Oahu) also contribute to favorable impressions for some families.

In summary, the reviews paint a picture of a nursing home with strong caregiving heart and several notable operational and structural weaknesses. Strengths include compassionate, attentive staff, competent clinical services (PT and medication management), cleanliness in areas, and meaningful activities. Key concerns are food quality, aging facilities and equipment, limited privacy in shared rooms, lack of outdoor space, and inconsistencies in staff courtesy and organization. For prospective families, the trade-off appears to be between excellent hands-on care from many staff members and the need to accept an older, communal facility with some service and management shortcomings. If prioritizing compassionate clinical care and activities, this facility may be a good fit; if private rooms, modern facilities, or strong dining are top priorities, these areas warrant further inquiry or discussion with management.

    About Pearl City Nursing Home

Pearl City Nursing Home sits in a five-story building with rooms that have private bathrooms, cable TV, kitchenettes, phone, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi, and you'll also find extra storage for your things. The staff speak English, work day and night, and include nurse managers, nurses, and certified nursing aides who help residents with daily needs like bathing, dressing, moving around, and taking medicine, and they always have a 24-hour call and emergency alert system ready in case someone needs help right away. People who have trouble getting around get non-ambulatory care, and there's medication management for folks who need reminders or help with pills or treatments. There's skilled nursing offered from 12 to 16 hours a day, plus round-the-clock supervision for safety.

In the building you'll find plenty of places where you can spend time-there are lounges for talking, a game room, a movie theater, hallways, and big recreation and dining areas on each floor, and they've got special spaces just for community activities, an arts room, a fitness room, a therapy room, and a library too. The rooms overlook scenic Pearl Harbor landmarks, which some folks like to sit and watch. There's a garden and walking paths outside, and the facility offers outdoor programs, scheduled daily activities, and music nights along with movie nights and other social events, with a Resident Council where residents can share what they're thinking or suggest things to make life better. The staff makes a point of asking residents about their likes, dislikes, and family interests so they can put together a personal care plan, and they work with families through meetings and encourage visits, even at mealtimes.

Pearl City Nursing Home can serve up to 122 people at once, and provides all sorts of care, like independent living for active seniors who want fewer chores, assisted living for those who need more daily help, memory care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia in spaces that keep them from getting confused or wandering off, and full nursing home care with 24-hour nursing support for those with more serious needs. There's also home care where trained aides offer company and non-medical support for people who want to stay in their own homes, and if somebody's just coming for a little while, short-term rehab and sub-acute care are available with daily therapy, family teaching, and help planning the trip home after recovery.

Care services at Pearl City Nursing Home include medical staff with doctors involved, and the team handles medication, advanced wound care, IV therapies, and pain management, including special respiratory care for people with tracheostomies or who need ventilators, with respiratory therapists who know what they're doing. The rehab department sees to physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and the therapy room is up high enough to overlook the harbor, which gives people a nice view while working on getting stronger. The facility puts a real focus on helping seniors feel at home, supporting health, and listening to what people want and need, so they can keep up with their social and spiritual lives as much as possible. There's transportation for outings, laundry and dry cleaning, housekeeping, and elevator service to make moving around easier. Pearl City Nursing Home works to be a home-like place that offers a safe, cheerful setting for seniors who want or need strong support.
