    Unhelpful staff, unsanitary rooms, fees

I toured Higley House - staffing looked fine on the tour, but my experience was different. Staff were often unhelpful (texting during interactions), refused assistance, skipped COVID protocols and regular showers, and residents seemed bored, ill, and rooms unsanitary. They hit us with extra service-plan charges, demanded 30-day notice/payment, have a no-refund-if-death clause, and after my mother died within 24 hours management was unresponsive - we're still disputing a refund. One night staff did a decent clean, but otherwise care felt minimal. I moved her to a new facility and she's thriving now; I share this to warn others and recommend documenting everything.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews describe a facility with a mixed public impression: admissions tours can present well-staffed and orderly, but day-to-day experiences appear inconsistent. Several families contrasted a positive tour impression with later concerns about staffing levels and responsiveness. Visible staffing at intake does not consistently translate into continuous hands-on attention according to the accounts provided.

Care quality and clinical oversight are recurring areas of concern. Reviewers cite delays in attending to residents' needs, changes in weight and sleep patterns, and what they perceive as insufficient monitoring of evolving medical and mental-status issues. There are also multiple references to irregular bathing and personal-care schedules. These items suggest gaps in routine personal-care delivery and in clinical follow-up/monitoring that prospective families should evaluate directly.

Staffing and staff conduct are described as uneven. While some individual staff interactions are characterized as attentive, reviewers also report instances of minimal staffing, staff texting during interactions, and a tone or lack of responsiveness that caused distress. Staffing appears inconsistent across shifts or days, which reviewers linked to reduced supervision and slower response times when needs arise.

Facility condition and infection control are noted as problematic by several families. Specific concerns include general cleanliness and sanitation issues, and lapses in infection-control practices, including inconsistent observance of the facility’s stated COVID protocols. These items were associated with reported infections by some families and contributed to requests for stronger hygiene and control measures.

Activities and resident engagement are described as limited. Multiple comments reference bored residents and an absence of organized, regular programming. That pattern suggests the facility’s activity schedule may not meet expectations for social engagement and mental stimulation for many residents.

Management, contracts, and billing practices are prominent themes. Reviewers describe difficulties communicating with management, delays or lack of response after critical incidents, and disputes over contract terms such as advance-notice requirements, extra service-plan charges, and refund policies. One serious family concern involved a resident death shortly after admission and an accompanying disagreement over refunds and manager responsiveness; this resulted in heightened family distress and advice to document all interactions. Overall, reviewers portray a facility whose financial and administrative policies feel rigid and focused on enforcement of contract terms.

Taken together, the pattern in these summaries is of inconsistent operational reliability: admissions may appear well-resourced, but ongoing care, sanitation, infection control, communication, and activity programming have uneven performance. Prospective residents and families should observe multiple daily shifts, review staffing ratios and cleaning schedules, request written infection-control policies, and carefully inspect contract terms—particularly around extra charges and refund/notice provisions—before making a placement decision.

About Higley House Assisted Living Home

Higley House Assisted Living Home sits in Gilbert, Arizona, as a small, 10-bed senior care center that aims to offer a peaceful place with thorough support for each resident, and it really does keep things focused on comfort, safety, and good company, where folks can count on 24-hour supervision and caring staff members who try their best to help with bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and anything else their daily routine might need, like getting from bed to chair, or managing personal care when mobility gets tough. There are private and shared rooms, furnished and equipped with cable TV, Wi-Fi, and kitchenettes or full kitchens, plus washers and dryers right in the room, and the whole place is set up to work for wheelchair use, with safety features such as sprinkler systems too, so if someone needs handicap accessible rooms or help with transfers, that's here as well. People who have memory issues, dementia, or Alzheimer's can expect more than just reminders-for example, there's a wander alert system for safety, specially trained staff for complex behaviors, and clear routines to ease confusion, plus personalized care plans to meet needs no matter how involved, with on-call nurses and visiting physicians for extra support if a resident's medical care needs change. Folks looking for independent living, assisted living, or more long-term memory care have options and get meals made each day-home-cooked and planned to fit dietary needs like diabetes or allergies-with plenty of activities like arts and crafts, movie nights, walking paths, gardens, and holiday events to keep the community lively but not too busy for comfort, and there's even pet-friendly apartments for those who want animal company around. Transportation's available for appointments and outings, laundry and housekeeping are taken care of, and communal spaces like dining rooms, courtyard, fitness center, and a salon/barbershop let people enjoy their time with others or find a quiet spot when they want it, and that matters, especially for folks who feel safer in small, close-knit places where details like medication management, help with daily life, and even reminders about meals are handled by someone who knows their routines. The staff at Higley House Assisted Living Home, which is part of R R East Valley Care Homes and not employed through Care.com, works around the clock and takes pride in keeping a warm, home-like atmosphere where residents can feel secure, respected, and as independent as they're able, and the whole community was recently renovated for modern comforts while still holding onto that quiet, welcoming feel, so families can rest a bit easier knowing there's always a plan for doctor visits, wound care, or even just making sure the right meals are served at the right times.
