    Compassionate staff helped regain independence

I'm so glad we chose this community for my mom - the staff are compassionate, knowledgeable, and truly go above and beyond (Aimee Perkins was a wonderful advocate). The facility is clean, safe and beautiful with lovely grounds, efficient front desk/maintenance, reliable transportation, great meals, and a wide range of activities that helped her regain independence. It feels like a family-like, uplifting place and I happily recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews describe West Shores as a well-maintained, resident-focused community with a strong social culture and broadly positive clinical care. Residents and families repeatedly praise the compassion and responsiveness of nurses, CNAs, and frontline staff; many comments highlight staff members who go beyond job expectations, long-tenured employees, and a welcoming admissions experience. The campus setting, bright common areas, and apartment-style units with multiple floor-plan options are consistently noted as strengths that support independence and a home-like feel.

Care and clinical issues: Clinical care is generally characterized as attentive and capable. Reviewers cite competent nursing, solid diabetes monitoring, in-house therapy services, and assistance that allows residents to retain independence where possible. At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns around staffing continuity — including turnover and the use of agency staff — that can affect clinical handoffs and medication timing. A number of families described delays or variability in medication administration and asked for clearer, more consistent clinical follow-up during transitions of care.

Staff and management: Admissions and marketing staff, including specific sales and marketing directors, receive frequent praise for being informative, helpful, and transparent during move-in. Conversely, some reviews describe variable managerial follow-through after move-in, occasional communication lapses with families, and mixed impressions of certain clinical leaders’ customer-service tone. There are also reports of billing and invoicing errors during care changes, and at least one isolated allegation of theft accompanied by concerns about incident follow-up; these point to opportunities for stronger administrative consistency and incident-communication protocols.

Dining and housekeeping: Dining is a polarizing topic. Many reviewers compliment the food — noting special-event offerings, a skilled chef, and good presentation in the dining room — while others describe inconsistent quality, blandness, or limited menu variety. Housekeeping and linen services are frequently noted as reliable, and common areas and apartments are typically described as clean and well-kept, though a few comments raise odor concerns in some hallways and occasional variability in exterior landscaping upkeep.

Activities and amenities: West Shores offers a broad, active programming slate that reviewers describe as a core strength. Regular activities include live music, piano, bingo, exercise classes, chapel services, craft events, and frequent bus outings to restaurants, museums, and shopping. On-site amenities such as billiards, a library, therapy, and a salon support resident engagement and rehabilitation goals. The community atmosphere is repeatedly described as warm and social, with many residents forming friendships and participating actively.

Safety and operations: The facility’s infection-control measures and access-control practices received positive comments, particularly during periods of heightened public-health concern. Transportation to medical appointments and routine excursions is viewed as reliable. Operationally, reviewers recommend that prospective residents and families confirm current staffing levels, menu plans, and administrative processes during a tour, since several operational areas show variability over time.

Bottom line: West Shores is portrayed as a well-appointed community with strong staff engagement, a robust activities program, and attractive grounds and living spaces. The most consistent areas for improvement are meal consistency, administrative accuracy and communication (including billing and incident follow-up), and staffing continuity that supports steady clinical routines. Prospective residents should weigh the facility’s social and environmental strengths against these operational variability factors and ask targeted questions about current staffing patterns, clinical handoffs, and dining options during a visit.

    About West Shores

West Shores is a senior living community that's owned and operated by Capital Senior Living Corporation, and they have both independent and assisted living services for older adults. They serve three nutritious meals every day in two restaurant-style dining halls with large windows, and you can choose from studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartments, all of which are cleaned once a week by housekeeping staff. Residents have transportation on the West Shores Bus to doctor and dental appointments, grocery stores, banks, and shopping centers, which makes getting around easier when you need to run errands or go to the clinic. There's a patio with views of Lake Hamilton for relaxing, an open atrium lobby where people can visit, and big indoor and outdoor common areas such as a TV lounge, a library, fireplaces, and raised gardening beds. West Shores has a beautician onsite, a barber shop, and a beauty salon, so folks can keep up with their grooming needs right there in the building.

The full-time Activity Director arranges a variety of programs that help keep residents active and social, with scheduled educational, recreational, and entertaining activities to encourage friendships, and they do focus on helping residents stay independent. The staff are always present as the community's fully staffed 24 hours a day, including a full-time executive and assisted living director, so if you need help, you can use the emergency pull cord system any time of day or night. Assisted living services help with personal care and daily living activities, plus medication management and nursing services for those who need them, while independent living works well for healthy, active seniors who want fewer worries and more freedom. West Shores also offers temporary stay services and hospice care when needed. Residents get personal laundry service, parking, a home care agency onsite, and there are specialized features for comfort and different care types, including support for those living with Alzheimer's or dementia. The community has a spacious, well-maintained environment with open-concept spaces throughout, and everything is set up to make life a bit easier and more enjoyable without any fuss.
