    Happy resident praises caring staff

I've lived here 13 years and couldn't be happier. The staff are caring and professional (Kim is delightful), the food is good, and the buildings and grounds are beautiful. My cozy apartment has a great view, and there are plenty of activities, transportation, and amenities (beauty shop, library, walking paths, fishing pond). It's a safe, supportive, home-like community - I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Good Shepherd Community presents as a broadly community-oriented senior living campus with a range of independent- and assisted-living options, cottages, and a nursing component. The campus setting and grounds — including a pond/lake, walking paths, and extensive acreage — are frequently cited as attractive features. Many residents and families describe the community as economically accessible, with income-based pricing and a sense of value; demand is indicated by a waiting list for cottages.

Staff and day-to-day care are a consistent strength in the overall impression of the community. Numerous comments highlight friendly, caring, and helpful staff, an on-site chaplain, language interpreters when needed, and transportation services that support outings and appointments. At the same time, there is a pattern of variable staff responsiveness and occasional concerns about staff knowledge or interpersonal tone; these indicate that staff performance can be uneven and that prospective residents should assess day-shift and night-shift staffing and responsiveness during a visit.

Dining receives mixed-but-leaning-positive feedback. Many residents praise themed, flavorful meals, an attentive chef, multiple meal options, and availability of in-room meal delivery. Conversely, there are references to limited meal provision in some housing types (one-meal models), and a few commenters suggested meal quality could be improved in certain settings. Prospective residents should confirm the meal plan for their specific unit type and whether dietary needs and preferences are accommodated.

Activities and social life appear well developed for an independent/assisted living community. Organized options cited include bingo, book club, dominoes, singing groups, exercise classes, fishing derbies, holiday events, and regularly scheduled trips. Amenities supporting recreation and socialization include a library (large-print materials noted), beauty salon, fitness room, and community calendar/floor meetings. Activity availability has been affected at times by infection-control measures, and some programs were in the process of being reintroduced when commenters visited.

Facility condition is mixed. Many reviewers praise attractive outdoor spaces, cottages, and common-area renovations, while others describe an older main building with dated interiors and areas where upkeep is inconsistent. Unit size is a recurring operational limitation: many studios and some apartments are described as small, although a number of larger or nicely decorated units are also mentioned. Accessibility features such as hand rails, wide automatic doors, elevators, and limited walk-in showers exist, but the number of accessible shower-equipped units is small. Maintenance responsiveness is another recurring operational theme: delays for repairs (for example, cable/TV issues) have been cited and suggest prospective residents verify maintenance turnaround expectations.

Management and administrative practices draw mixed commentary. Several residents appreciate management and the supportive community culture, while others described billing delays, slow refunds, and a strict move-out policy that they found inflexible. These administrative concerns, together with intermittent maintenance delays, are the primary operational weaknesses noted across visits. Long-term residents frequently report satisfaction and a strong sense of community, indicating the environment can be a good fit for those seeking affordable independent living with active social programming.

Bottom line: Good Shepherd Community offers substantial social programming, attractive grounds, affordable pricing, and a generally caring staff, making it a viable option for many independent-living seekers. Prospective residents should verify unit size and layout, accessibility features (especially walk-in showers), the specific meal plan for their housing type, maintenance response expectations, and administrative policies (billing and move-out terms) during a personal tour and follow-up conversations with management.

    About Good Shepherd Community

Good Shepherd Community sits in a leafy suburb of Little Rock, Arkansas, spread out over a peaceful 140-acre campus with lakes, walking trails, and lots of greenery, and it's been providing senior health care services since 1979, so it's got some history. The community is faith-based and offers a wide range of living options, like independent living in cottages or apartments, assisted living, and memory care, and it's set up to handle many types of needs-including folks needing help with everyday tasks or specialized care, particularly for those with Alzheimer's, and there's a full-service retirement center here too. All together, there are over 500 apartments across five buildings, with choices from studio to one or two-bedroom layouts, including accessible units for people with disabilities, and for those looking for affordable housing, certain buildings like Moore and Rhinehart offer HUD Project-based Section 8 and LIHTC rental assistance, mostly for seniors age 62 and older.

Residents get help as needed, such as walking, bathing, grooming, nursing, medication support, occupational therapy, wound care, and daily personal care, and the nursing staff is on-site 24/7. There's a retirement community called Shepherd's Cove with 81 apartments and increased services, two meals a day, laundry, and housekeeping, while The Cottages has 104 units designed for independent seniors wanting peace and privacy. The Moore Building offers 200 HUD-subsidized apartments, with card-operated laundry on every floor, a beauty salon, meeting areas, computer lab, and library, making it handy for folks who like those extras, and the Rhinehart Building gives residents access to free washers and dryers, scenic balconies, and shares certain amenities with Moore. The Roberts features studio units for those 62 and older, with meals, transportation, utilities, cable TV, and gathering spots for exercise or games, so there's something for different needs and preferences across these buildings.

For meal services, some buildings-like Shepherd's Cove and The Roberts-offer up to two meals per day, while breakfast and lunch are available in other apartments. Residents have access to kitchens or kitchenettes if they want to cook, and amenities like laundry, cable TV, maintenance, sprinkler systems, and safety features come standard. There are both private rooms (running $6,500 to $8,000 per month) and semi-private rooms ($5,500 to $7,000 per month), and those preferring independent living can rent at more affordable rates in HUD-subsidized apartments.

Community life is busy with options like arts and crafts, computer classes, education programs, health seminars, wellness programs, movie matinees, games, and group excursions off-campus. The campus holds a chapel, library, exercise rooms, fitness center, dining rooms, guest parking, game rooms, wifi, and a scenic fishing dock at Fisher's Lake, which draws residents out for fresh air or a walk to the pier. The staff organizes religious and cultural programs, social events, lectures, and leads daily activities. There's a beauty salon and barbershop, plus services like laundry, dry cleaning, transportation, and even podiatry.

Good Shepherd Community has a strong commitment to supporting independence while offering care, and they maintain a peaceful, private environment for seniors who want to belong to a faith-based place with various services. Those looking for affordable options can find HUD and LIHTC rental assistance, and most units come in several layouts with easy access throughout. Housekeeping, maintenance, personal care assistants, and nurses are available to help, and the grounds offer plenty of room for walks or quiet time. The property has served the Little Rock community for a long while, and reviews currently rate it highly-4.9 out of 5 from 17 reviews-even though connecting to more detailed information might be tricky right now due to server issues. Tours and virtual visits can be scheduled for those interested in learning more or needing an initial consultation or assessment.
