    Caring staff, beautiful grounds, pricey

I'm impressed - friendly, genuinely caring staff; outstanding, gourmet dining; beautiful, resort-like grounds and hotel-like, spacious apartments with great amenities (heated pool, movie theater, activity rooms). My loved one settled in quickly, is very social and well cared for across levels, but be warned: there's a very steep buy-in and high upfront costs, a confusing meal-point system with extra charges and no rollover, a long waitlist, and occasional disorganization around move-in/pricing. Overall I feel she's in good hands and would recommend Capriana if the price fits.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews portray Capriana Retirement Living & Assisted Living as a high-end, resort-like community that many residents and families view very positively. The dominant themes are luxury, cleanliness, attractive design, and a strong program of activities and amenities. Numerous reviewers emphasize the hotel-like atmosphere, beautiful grounds, and resort amenities such as an outdoor heated pool and movie theater. Across the majority of summaries, residents and families describe the community as thriving, social, and comfortable — often calling it first-class, luxurious, and one of the nicest facilities in the area.

Facilities and location: Reviewers repeatedly highlight spacious, attractive apartment layouts and high-quality finishes. The property is described as grand and beautiful inside and out, with pleasant smells and a resort-like ambiance on arrival. Commonly noted amenities include a heated outdoor pool, activity and craft rooms, a movie theater, and well-maintained grounds. Several reviewers mentioned proximity to shopping and other conveniences, and some noted that apartments offer good square footage relative to perceived value.

Dining: Dining earns frequent praise for quality, variety, and presentation — with some reviews calling the dining experience five-star and gourmet, especially for upscale dinner specials. However, the community operates a meal-point system rather than including three meals per day as part of a standard package. Specific details called out in reviews: residents receive monthly dining points, lunch entrees were cited as costing 16 points, and unused points do not roll over month-to-month. Several reviewers flagged that extra services and certain meals incur additional charges. While many praised the food and variety, the meal-point structure and out-of-pocket costs for some dining were a recurring concern and a point of confusion.

Staff and quality of care: Staff are overwhelmingly described as friendly, caring, attentive, and professional. Multiple summaries praise management accessibility and hands-on leadership — in particular a director named Sam was singled out for being engaged and approachable. Reviewers emphasize that staff take time to understand residents’ needs, provide thorough assistance, and maintain a genuinely caring environment with 24-hour staffing. Many family members reported that their relatives were thriving and well looked after, and several comments specifically called out that multiple levels of care (including skilled nursing) are available on-site, which reassured families.

Activities and programs: Capriana is frequently reported to offer a robust calendar of activities, outings, and programs. Reviewers highlight an active social environment, a variety of crafts and events, and high-caliber programming that supports resident engagement. The combination of amenities and organized activities contributes to numerous statements that residents are happy, social, and involved.

Management, move-in, and organization: While management is often praised for being accessible and dedicated, a recurring operational critique concerns clarity and organization around costs and the move-in process. A number of reviewers noted that cost descriptions were unclear or confusing, and one or more families expressed unease about organizational issues despite appreciating staff accessibility. The move-in experience was described by some as disorganized and lacking a clear checklist. There are also process-related notes about a refundable waitlist deposit, a lengthy waiting list, and priority rules (e.g., priority for 1BR), which can affect placement and scheduling.

Costs and financial model: A major theme is the financial model: Capriana appears to require a large upfront buy-in or entry fee described as extremely steep by several reviewers. At least one review references a generous refund policy (90% refundable on leaving), which some families found reassuring, but the high initial cost remains a significant deterrent for others. The meal-point system, additional charges for extra services, and occasional perception of pricey dining contribute to concerns about total ongoing cost. Reviewers also mentioned specifics such as a refundable waitlist deposit and long waiting lists that may affect availability. One isolated comment referenced staff pay at $17/hr, which was included in a negative review raising concerns about care/staffing, though this was not a common theme across reviews.

Notable patterns and outliers: The bulk of reviews are strongly positive about the environment, staff, dining quality, and resident satisfaction. The consistent praise suggests a high overall level of resident contentment. The most frequent negatives are financial (high buy-in and opaque cost details) and some operational friction during move-in or tour availability. There is at least one outlier negative review implying deeper care or staff concerns, but this appears isolated relative to the generally favorable consensus. Prospective residents and families should weigh the premium cost against the many reported benefits, ask for clear written explanations of the buy-in, refund schedule, monthly fees, and dining points, and request a detailed move-in checklist and clarity on what is included versus charged a la carte.

Bottom line: Capriana positions itself as a luxury senior living community with strong staff engagement, a wide range of amenities, high-quality dining, and active programming that many residents love. The facility’s major drawbacks are primarily financial and administrative: a steep upfront cost, a meal-point system that can be confusing and limiting, additional charges for certain services, occasional organizational gaps during move-in, and limited immediate availability due to wait lists. For families prioritizing a resort-like environment, robust activities, and attentive staff, Capriana generally receives high marks; for those sensitive to upfront expense or seeking fully inclusive dining and transparent pricing, these are areas to investigate closely before committing.
