    Caring staff, spotless facility, comfortable

I stayed at Broadway by the Sea and was impressed by the genuinely caring, professional staff and an excellent physical therapy team. The facility is spotless, welcoming, and lively with great activities; my wheelchair-accessible room had a sliding patio door and was conveniently near the nurses' station. Meals were fine for recovery, and administration was responsive and attentive. Overall I felt safe, well cared for, and comfortable.

    Summary of reviews

Broadway by the Sea elicits strongly mixed but predominantly positive impressions across clinical care, therapy, activities and facility presentation. Numerous families and residents praise the nursing staff for compassion, attentiveness and dignity-preserving care. The facilityโ€™s rehabilitation program and therapy teams are frequently singled out as effective, producing measurable short-term progress and safe transitions home. Many reviewers describe a home-like, bright environment with organized housekeeping, pleasant odors, and an active social calendar that reduces loneliness and improves resident engagement.

Activities and social programming are a consistent strength: reviewers reference an impressive schedule, small-group discussions, music and festive events, and standout activity staff who go beyond expectations to make residents feel at home. Dining receives generally favorable comments for accommodating dietary needs, though opinions on food quality are mixed. Physical spaces are often described as clean, well-maintained and thoughtfully designed, and the seaside location is noted as calming and convenient for families.

Despite these strengths, a recurring pattern of operational concerns emerges. Staffing inconsistency โ€” particularly overnight shortages and high turnover โ€” appears to affect care continuity and family confidence. Several families raised serious clinical concerns in isolated cases, including medication-administration errors and delayed responses to changing needs; these have led to allegations of inadequate clinical follow-up in specific situations. Related issues include intermittent lapses in communication, variability in leadership continuity and accountability, and occasional problems with laundry or personal-item tracking.

A smaller subset of reviewers reported more acute facility-level issues such as sanitation or pest-control concerns and episodes of disorganization in common areas. Management responses appear variable: some accounts describe proactive leadership that addressed problems and improved operations, while others point to repeated director changes and uneven follow-through. These mixed accounts suggest that resident experience can be strongly influenced by current staffing and managerial stability.

For prospective residents and families, Broadway by the Sea offers notable strengths in rehabilitative therapy, compassionate bedside care, engaging activities, and a well-maintained physical environment. At the same time, families should directly assess operational reliability during a tour: ask about overnight staffing ratios, medication-administration safeguards and audit practices, leadership tenure and escalation pathways for clinical concerns, laundry and personal-item procedures, and recent pest-control or sanitation measures. Those topics will help clarify whether the facilityโ€™s positive care culture is consistently supported by stable staffing and strong administrative follow-through.

    About Broadway by the Sea

Broadway By the Sea is a nursing and rehabilitation facility that sits under the ownership of Flagstone Healthcare South LLC, with Clint Macdonald running things since February 2023, and it's backed by The Ensign Group, so, you get a pretty big place with 98 certified beds and usually about 81 residents staying there each day. The staff includes trained nurses, doctors, and social workers, and they offer 24-hour skilled nursing care along with all kinds of therapy-physical, occupational, speech-and even special physical therapy treatments like strengthening exercises, neuromuscular re-education, and electrical stimulation for those who need help with mobility and gait training. The place has wound care, pain management, pharmacy, lab, and X-ray services available, so if you need more medical help, that's taken care of onsite too, and there's also hospice, respite care, and restorative nursing if that's needed.

Folks live in shared rooms, either 2 or 3 to a room, and beds get assigned when they're open, so you might be sharing with one or two others, and for fresh air, there's a non-smoking patio plus a separate place for those who want to smoke. The dining area doesn't just serve food-it gets used for group activities, and staff keep up a monthly activity calendar with plenty of choices to help people stay busy, be social, and work on rebuilding strength if that's part of their needs. Cleanliness is usually noted as good and the staff get described as friendly and helpful, but it should be said, the place has had several deficiencies, 68 total on inspection reports-including 5 related to infection-and a February 2025 complaint found 3 more, with some problem areas including safety hazards, incomplete care plans, and supervision lapses, so it's something people notice and talk about.

The average nurse turnover here sits at 62.7%, quite a bit higher than the state average, and nursing staff give about 4.32 hours per resident each day, which is a little lower than what's typical for California. To get in and out, everyone passes through a security check at the entrance and front desk-a simple safety measure-and the environment is generally described as welcoming, focused on helping folks keep their independence or rebuild strength after illness or surgery. Broadway By the Sea aims to make personalized care plans and has both short-term rehab and long-term care options, but it's important to know they've been marked for some lapses in keeping the place as safe and organized as it should be. No extra information about this place has come directly from the facility, but you can see what's available if you visit and get a sense of the environment for yourself.
